Chapter 12: 12. You Really Take Any Job!

A massive oil tanker was parked beside the machinery used to excavate the mountainside.

The two were connected by a long rubber hose, covered in dirt and various stains, through which standard Imperial fuel flowed, powering the massive machine to carve through stone.

Discarded fuel pipes trembled on the ground alongside the machinery, and liquid promethium was carelessly splashed across the surface.

The folded antler emblem on the military oil tanker revealed the identity of the newcomers.

The 37th Mountain Combat Infantry Regiment, stationed by order in the Horton Mountain Range to oversee the only railway line leading to the northern wilderness.

At some unknown point, this elite force of the Aurelian family had also been turned.

Black muzzles pointed at Leon and his companions. Under the cold cover of a cannon, the leading officer called out loudly: "The Governor has ordered me to use all means necessary to bring you back to the Governor's Mansion."

"If it's my father's order, as the second son of the Aurelian family and rightful ruler of this planet, I would naturally comply... but which Governor are you referring to?"

Hiding behind cover, Leon sneered, clearly having deduced the origin of these people.

Beside him, Mireille glanced at the white stag emblem on their uniforms with a trace of confusion in her eyes.

She couldn't believe that the 37th Mountain Infantry Regiment, known for its extreme loyalty to the family during previous wars, would suddenly rebel overnight. Moreover, Mireille couldn't see any cult symbols on them that were associated with the heretics who had incited the rebellion of the Aurelian heir.

"..."

The officer in front, his expression stern, stiffened slightly when he heard Leon's words.

After a moment of silence, he looked up at the second son of the Aurelian family standing before him and replied: "The Governor's whereabouts are currently unknown. Naturally, the order comes from Acting Governor Angelo."

Oh, great.

Leon squinted his eyes.

That old geezer.

Although he had anticipated such a situation before departing, the assassins had come far quicker than expected.

It was clear that someone had deliberately leaked Leon's whereabouts.

Leon could understand their reasoning.

In their eyes, Leon lacked a solid foundation and only had a title. They didn't believe he could emerge victorious in the struggles within the Northern Provinces against the barbarian chieftains. Even if he solidified his position, they doubted he would support them due to strategic concerns.

Thus, they planned to have the rebels kill this heir to the Northern Provinces.

By wielding the banner of righteousness, they could force the steppe chieftains to join forces and suppress the rebellion—a seemingly logical move.

Although he could understand it, experiencing it firsthand was utterly infuriating.

"Send my regards to the mighty ones in the High Heavens—Brino!"

Suddenly, Leon spoke up.

Upon hearing Leon's words, the dozen or so soldiers at the checkpoint revealed looks of confusion.

Clearly, they were astonished that the second son of the Aurelian family, who usually seemed ignorant about everything, was so knowledgeable about the Holy Covenant Sect Creed.

As they instinctively pondered Leon's connection to the Holy Covenant Sect Creed, the national church nun beside Leon sprang into action, leaping out from behind cover with a gun in each hand.

The roar of bolter fire echoed through the mountains, and the dazzling light of the laser weapon burned the eyes.

In an instant, the laser weapon in the nun's hand pierced through the skull of the foremost soldier.

Meanwhile, the most threatening anti-material weapon loaded with armor-piercing rounds was also destroyed by the bolter's barrage.

Shards of equipment scattered onto the oil tanker behind them, tearing open a large crack in the half-full promethium tank. Fortunately, no explosion occurred.

Perhaps because of this planet's remote location or the outdated refining techniques, the promethium spilling from the tanker did not solidify quickly or evaporate into toxic gas.

Seeing the black liquid slowly flowing across the ground, everyone instinctively breathed a sigh of relief.

"..."

To prevent secondary explosions, Brino holstered her bolter and pulled out an alloy dagger from Mireille's arsenal.

She considered shouting for Leon to provide cover fire but remembered his deadly accuracy back at the Governor's Mansion.

Fearing even greater chaos, she quickly dismissed the idea.

With a swift motion, she slit the throat of a soldier on her left, the crimson blood spurting out like a fountain.

Gracefully avoiding the oncoming spray, she used the corpse as cover and struck again with her lethal blade.

Unfortunately—

Another soldier clutched his torn neck, choking on the blood flooding his airway, his face filled with terror.

They couldn't even see how the enemy had reached them, let alone retaliate before dying helplessly.

If only she had a chainsword or a power sword—

Brino calmly dodged an oncoming blade.

The faint sound of a laser shot rang out behind her.

Brino gently touched the neck of a deputy officer before her and turned back to see the Emperor's chosen one looking just as surprised.

Behind Brino, a soldier who had attempted to shoot her from behind collapsed, a clean shot wound visible in his throat.

Impressive progress! Truly chosen by the Emperor.

Brino looked at Leon in astonishment.

The boy seemed equally stunned by how precise his shot had been, standing there with his gun in slight disbelief.

This only confirmed Brino's belief.

It was all guided by the Emperor!

"The Emperor's will moves mysteriously—what seems foolish is wise."

'The Emperor's guidance always arrives unexpectedly.'

Smiling at the thought, she turned her focus back to the enemy.

"Cover me!"

She whispered.

The two soldiers standing before the officer fell simultaneously. The officer, surrounded by corpses and faced with the formidable warrior in nun attire, was left with no options.

Seeing the burning promethium on the ground, he gritted his teeth and reached for his sidearm, intending to ignite it.

Unfortunately, before he could act, a sharp pain shot through his hand as the laser pierced his palm.

A moment later, a blade flashed, and his entire arm was severed, falling to the ground with a heavy thud.

Clutching his severed arm, he saw the dagger pressed against his forehead and knew he was doomed. He looked at Leon, who was emerging from behind cover, and said: "The Empire will avenge us. Even if you escape to the north, do you think those barbarian chieftains can withstand the Starfleet's pursuit?"
