Chapter 15: 15. Before the Battle.
"Nothing..."
Melissa blinked to hide the fleeting moment of her unease.

Inside the vehicle, Leon was flipping through the books in his mind.
Ever since acquiring the throne shard that might be linked to a Primarch, the sacrificial text that had appeared alongside Leon's memories of his past life seemed to undergo some peculiar changes.
Not only did a new page emerge detailing how to summon the entity pointed to by the throne shard, but there was also—
The Northeastern Shamanic Cult—The Spirit Medium.
Leon read through the words before him, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
Sitting in the front, Brino kept her foot pressed firmly on the accelerator, nearly causing the vehicle to take off. She paid no mind to the fact that the engine of the armored car beneath them was now roaring under unbearable strain as it sped wildly along the rugged mountain road.
Mireille, sitting in the back, continued tinkering with her oversized gadgets, trying to link up with the mobile city-states controlled by the northern barbarian chiefs to request reinforcements.
Due to the high speed and the bumps, Leon was having trouble reading, even though the book was stored in his mind.
Leon often suspected that his brain, thanks to the thesis he had been writing in his past life, had become the most secure vault in this world.
Since crossing over to this universe, Leon's nights had been remarkably mundane compared to the stories he'd read in his previous life—he hadn't heard any ominous whispers in the dark, nor had he been blessed by a Chaos God like Tzeentch.
He figured the Chaos Gods probably hadn't noticed him yet.
However, judging by the ominous direction this cursed book was heading, that might change soon.
Leon looked at the new content in the sacrificial text. His mouth twitched involuntarily.
Good grief—conduct the ritual, and a "lucky" Greater Daemon will randomly emerge from the Warp, huh?
What did it mean by "after the ritual, the object of your prayers will take a part of your body as an offering"?
The bad news was that the text directly affected Leon, meaning that regardless of life or death, he could be targeted by the ritual.
The worse news was that once the entity completed Leon's request, whatever it demanded in return could not be refused!
And apparently, the book couldn't even guarantee that Leon would successfully summon the desired entity every time?
The odds? Fifty-fifty!
"Fck you!"
Leon could already envision the four ruinous powers holding hands as they gazed lovingly at his mortal form.
What a tragedy!
To be overwhelmed by some depraved elder sister-type daemon, left utterly defenseless, becoming a... No!
Leon shuddered, forcibly halting that train of thought.
Instead of summoning those disastrous Warp entities, couldn't he just pray for someone better, like Saint Guilliman, the blue-armored uncle of discipline? And hey, the Emperor was still alive, sitting on the Golden Throne, waiting for Leon to—
Wait!
Suddenly, Leon's eyes focused, realizing something wasn't right.
After all, the sacrificial text clearly defined the nature of spirit summoning as "calling the departed back to fulfill their unfinished will."
Based on his meager knowledge of 40K lore from his past life, ever since a certain crow lord plugged the warp portal at Cadia, the ascended daemon Primarch had been sulking on Sicarus, quietly weeping Warp-pearls. His rare outings were mainly to join his dear nephew Abaddon in declaring unilateral victories over the Emperor.
So—
Who exactly was the "departed" entity this throne shard pointed to?
Leon materialized the sacrificial text in his hands.
He turned to the newly added page labeled Eastern Holy Grail War.
[Relic: Shard of the Throne of Joachim]
[Associated Spirit: King of Stars / Homo Exaltus / Rainbringer / True Name: ???]
[Summoning Conditions: Sacrifice 1,000 cultists who superficially worship the God-Emperor but secretly revere dark powers, and destroy their deity's idol (if there aren't enough cultists, you may substitute with adherents of the Imperial Truth).]
[Prayer:
Flames of betrayal, blood of vengeance, we invoke the name of Lorgar.
Exalted prophet, holy scion, we praise the name of Lorgar.
To the neglectful, we renounce; to the compassionate, we exalt.
We draw the gaze of the saints; we accept the blessings of pain.
The stars stained with blood, the galaxy set ablaze; we offer our rites to sate the gods.]
[Warning: Should his will remain unfulfilled, prepare to face his wrath!]
Personal Profiles?
Indeed, the treatment for a Primarch was leagues ahead.
Leon glanced at the adjacent note about Brino, written in the margins of the page—a profile that exuded an aura of poverty and simplicity:
[A worshipper of the God-Emperor who perished like a flicker of ash during the War of the Beast (perhaps she could take two bullets for you when faced with mortal firepower).]
Good grief, how perfunctory—truly the Emperor's coin incarnate!
Leon lifted his gaze to glance at the young Sister of Battle currently in the driver's seat. She was humming a cheerful tune while casually stuffing something into her mouth.
Apparently, Mireille's stash of snacks had been thoroughly commandeered by Brino as her "compensation" for providing free transport to the group.
So what, Leon wondered, was her reason for responding to the summons and returning to the mortal plane to continue fighting?
He pondered this.
Leon temporarily set aside the question of why there seemed to be two Lorgars.
Perhaps the ascended Lorgar's remark to Corvus Corax—"I am no longer who I once was"—was not just empty rhetoric.
However, rather than dwelling on such abstract musings, Leon was more interested in what exactly was on Brino's mind as she singlehandedly drove their group through the siege.
"Do you have any unfulfilled wishes?" Leon asked, testing the waters.
Through the rearview mirror, Brino caught Leon's earnest gaze directed straight at her.
"Wishes…"
"Hmm?"
She put on a contemplative expression, causing the armored vehicle to jolt even more violently as it sped forward.
"Doesn't seem like I have any…"
Leon had expected her to ask about the outcome of the War of the Beast, whether their sacrifices had meaning. Or to inquire about the current state of the Ecclesiarchy.
He imagined she might plead with him, as the "emissary of the God-Emperor," to work hard and save the Imperium after hearing about its dire state.
But when Brino's casual reply reached his ears, Leon was momentarily stunned.
His first thought was:
Did he lack enough favorability points to unlock her hidden quest?
However, he quickly realized Brino wasn't lying.
No wishes? Then what about the reward after completing her mission?
Unwilling to give up, Leon pressed further.
"Are you not curious about how the war ended? How this nation remembers you all? How the Ecclesiarchy is faring? And what became of your companions who fought alongside you back then…"
Brino quietly listened to Leon's barrage of questions. Once his fervor ebbed, she gradually slowed the vehicle, placed her hand on the handbrake, stared ahead in silence for a moment, and then spoke in a soft yet resolute tone.
"For someone as insignificant as me, my sacrifice doesn't matter to this cold and cruel galaxy, does it?"
Her rhetorical question carried a mix of helplessness and unwavering faith that Leon could clearly sense.
"Humanity rose like wild grass during the Golden Age and fell like withered leaves during the Warp Storms. The weak do not deserve the right to survive. This is no longer a matter of morality; it is the undeniable reality of this universe."
"Only the strong can change the galaxy. Only those with power can propel history forward. People like me, the foolish and the lowly, are weak. No matter how numerous we are, we're like dust and ash upon a hill—dispersed at the slightest gust of wind."
"Humanity survives solely because of the Emperor's grace and the angels and countless warriors who serve Him. There exists no human stronger than the Emperor. If such a human did exist, they would simply be a stronger Emperor."
She had once heard a story during her time in the military, discovered amidst the ruins of a desolate planet.
"I witnessed Horus kill the Emperor," Captain Loken had said.
A chronicler, sworn to record the triumphs of the Warmaster, had written those words while following the fleet of the Luna Wolves after departing from Terra.
The Emperor's armies, which ruled the galaxy, had mercilessly crushed an Emperor ruling over nine worlds with his hidden legions.
Who could have anticipated that this seemingly jesting remark would one day become a self-fulfilling prophecy?
