Chapter 21: Minerva (Short)
Albus Dumbledore was panicking. The charms he had that would go off should anything happen to Harry or the wards at the Dursleys had all gone off at the same time. Apparating to Number 4 Privet Drive had confirmed his worst nightmares. Inside the home Vernon was cursing some fellow named Theseus while Petunia was in hysterics blabbing about Lily Potter and James Potter having returned from the dead. Scanning her surface thoughts with a discreet legilimency probe his eyes widened at what Petunia had witnessed.
Somehow Lily and James Potter had indeed returned from the dead. Along with a younger Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. It was either that or someone had polyjuiced into them but since their bodies had vanished that night it was unlikely. There was also the case of the boy with the trident. From Petunia's memories alone he could tell the boy was powerful. From what he saw in Vernon's head the boy had wandless magic down to a tee. The trident had left a strange lingering signature in the place. Dumbledore could not quite place the familiarity of it. Then he realized,
"The trident gives off a similar aura as the Elder Wand!"
He hastily apparated back to his office at Hogwarts. Searching for Harry could wait another day. Back in his office he consulted his books. Despite publicly holding the opinion that the Deathly Hallows were made by the Peverell brothers. He knew deep down that no human hands could have crafted the relics. He had studied two of the three, he knew more about them than the others that have actively looked for them over the centuries.
Just then a flash of light drew his attention away from the book he was reading. A name had appeared on the Book of Admittance. Regardless, it was rare for a name to be added this late into the year. Walking over to the book he scanned for a newly added name spotting only one. Bella Swan.
'Who the hell is Bella Swan?' He thought to himself, that wasn't a pureblood name.
Checking the year the name was under he noticed that it was under the sixth year. Along with that new name he nearly spat out his lemon drop when he noticed several more names at the sixth year section. Apparently he was going to meet the resurrected Lily and James much sooner.
'Minerva is going to have a fit once she realizes who's come back to the castle.'
Minerva McGonagall already knew that Lily and James had seemingly returned from the grave. She was currently in her office downing shot after shot of single malt whiskey after what she had seen when she went to check on Harry Potter.
After leaving him at those steps nearly a decade and a half ago she had regretted not taking him in herself once she witnessed the abuse he faced with those terrible muggles. She had checked on him every year in secret ever since, making sure that he was still safe. She wished that she could have done more.
On one particular visit, that night, she had witnessed something that had her questioning her own sanity. While in her animagus form she had seen several figures appear from a shimmering portal in the middle of the street. Her heart skipped a beat when she spotted James and Lily among them followed by Remus and Peter. Questions flooded her mind at that very moment. Question that nearly gave her away once Remus disillusioned himself and stood next to the tree she was occupying.
She had watched the only figure she couldn't identify approach the Dursley home before blasting the door open. A small part of her wanted to defend little Harry, but another held her back pointing out that Lily and James were with the figure holding the trident. She had watched for hours before Remus and Peter disappeared in flashes of light. Moments later Harry along with the latest arrivals flashed away. She had stumbled into her office after shakily taking her human form again. She would have gone to Dumbledore to inform him of what had happened but decided against it seeing that the old man was seemingly out of the castle.
'Maybe I can finally make it up to Lily and James.'
