Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Bouncing Back from the Bottom
Back in the car, Xia Zhi couldn't wait to ask, "Why is he so afraid of you? Who are you?"
He Jinnan faced her, lightly pinched her face, and smiled, "I am He Jinnan, your husband."
"No, you know what I'm asking. Why does he call you Second Young Master?"
After asking, Xia Zhi pondered to herself, muttering, "Isn't it common in wealthy families to use such titles? So you're a young master from a wealthy family? The He Family's Second Young Master?"
After asking, she was startled, covered her mouth, and stared at him wide-eyed, "He Jinnan, you couldn't possibly be the He Family's second young master from Hai City's richest family, could you?"
He Jinnan nodded with a smile, "That's right, it is I."
"Oh my God!" Xia Zhi couldn't believe it, "I actually had a flash marriage with the second young master of the richest family, isn't that too surreal?"
Knowing he was the deputy general manager, lived in a big house, and drove a Maybach, she had only thought he was a career elite. But she never imagined his status was so unattainable.
He Jinnan clasped her face with both hands, looked at her seriously, and said, "Status isn't important, what's important is our feelings."
"Really?" Xia Zhi was puzzled, "My status and yours do not match at all, will your family approve?"
"Don't worry about that, Grandpa will respect my choice."
He Jinnan let go of her, sat up straight, and told her, "Don't feel burdened, it's really no big deal, as long as we live our own good little life."
Xia Zhi nodded, thinking to herself how fortunate it was that she had the foresight to keep finances separate with him; otherwise, if any issues arose later, she couldn't contend with a powerful family.
Just as He Jinnan started the car, suddenly two figures blocked the way ahead. As he had expected, it was Xia Shuyuan and Zheng Qiuyue.
Xia Zhi frowned deeply and, seeing them approaching the driver's cabin, said to him, "No matter what they say, you shouldn't agree."
As soon as she finished speaking, Xia Shuyuan approached and knocked on the car window.
He Jinnan lowered the window, looked at him with disdain, and said nothing.
"Son-in-law, no rush to leave, eh? Your dad has booked a restaurant, let's have dinner together."
Xia Shuyuan turned his obsequious attitude from earlier towards Mr. Wang to He Jinnan, which made Xia Zhi feel disgusted and embarrassed.
Zheng Qiuyue also chimed in, "Right, let's have a meal together and talk about your and Xiao Zhi's wedding. You see, you two got married without telling us, we as parents felt quite upset."
Hehe. Xia Zhi scoffed inwardly, How could they say that so shamelessly? Don't they feel guilty? She exhaled deeply, turned her head away, and refused to look at their disgusting faces anymore.
He Jinnan looked at them with a cool gaze and said, "There's no need to go for dinner, it's best if we keep our contact minimal from now on. That's it." After saying this, he rolled up the window and drove away.
Xia Shuyuan and Zheng Qiuyue watched the car drive off, even taking a few steps after it.
"Honey, what do we do now? The collaboration with Mr. Wang has fallen through, and we can't afford to lose face and lose out," Zheng Qiuyue said sorrowfully, "Now, we've completely offended Xia Zhi!"
Xia Shuyuan, watching the car disappear, ran his hand through his thinning hair, puzzled, "When did that girl get such a wealthy son-in-law? How did I not know?"
"Husband, do you think they are for real? Could they be bluffing us?" Zheng Qiuyue asked, hardly believing it.
Xia Shuyuan withdrew his gaze and spoke to her, "Real or not, Xia Zhi has now climbed up to He Jinnan, this money tree. Just now, it seemed like He Jinnan cares a lot about her, maybe he really likes her. So, moving forward, let's go back and suck up to my ambitious daughter, make her happy, then we can also benefit from He Jinnan."
"What an unpredictable turn of events!" Zheng Qiuyue was speechless but could only agree with her husband's words.
On the way back, Xia Zhi was sullen and silent, staring blankly out the car window.
At the red light, He Jinnan turned towards her, scratched her chin gently, and coaxed, "It's all in the past now, don't be upset."
Xia Zhi slowly turned her head to look at him and said embarrassingly, "I embarrassed myself today, showing you what ultimate parents look like."
"Xia Zhi, it doesn't matter in front of me, I won't laugh at you," he said softly as he touched her hair.
"But I laugh at myself." She covered her face with her hands and said weakly, "Whenever I think about him groveling in front of Mr. Wang, saying 'give her another chance,' I feel so sad and angry. Another chance for what? To share a bed? Why do I have such a father?"
He Jinnan looked at her with sympathy and gently pulled her into his arms, "Although we can't choose our parents, we can decide our own fate."
He cheerfully said, "Look, you married me, and I help you deal with the scum. Isn't your fate starting to look up?"
Xia Zhi sat up straight from his embrace, "You're right, perhaps life has hit rock bottom and is now bouncing back."
"So, smile, don't be sad for such people, as that would be punishing yourself. You need to become strong and step on them."
Xia Zhi obediently gave him a slight smile, her smile blooming brightly.
He Jinnan smiled contentedly and said, "That's right, just like that."
The car continued on, passing by a fried chicken shop, and he got out to buy two portions of fried chicken.
Once home, the maid had made dinner and left, and the two ate dinner before busying themselves with their own things.
After tidying up the kitchen, Xia Zhi made a cup of coffee for He Jinnan and took it to the study.
He Jinnan was looking at his phone, and when he saw her come in, he waved her over, "Come here, look at this, it might cheer you up."
She put down the coffee, walked over, and saw on the phone a photo of Mr. Wang's back, covered in lashes from a cane, a ghastly sight.
"Oh my!" she exclaimed, "Who did this to him?"
Suddenly remembering what He Jinnan had said in the office before leaving, she asked, "Did you have someone do this?"
He Jinnan wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her onto his lap, explaining, "He is the brother of the gardener from the old house, who had a business mindset and was supported by Grandpa in business. But he still belongs to the old house, and having done wrong, he must be punished, no doubt about it."
"Doesn't this count as abuse of private punishment?"
She asked softly, her face turning red since she was sitting on his lap.
"It depends," He Jinnan said, "Seeing him like this, do you feel better?"
Xia Zhi nodded and said sincerely, "He Jinnan, thank you for helping me."
"It's my duty to do things for my wife."
They looked at each other, the air filled with an ambiguous atmosphere.
Unable to withstand his intense gaze, Xia Zhi stood up from his embrace and quickly said, "I made you coffee. Drink it, I'll head out first." After speaking, she scurried out like a frightened rabbit.
He Jinnan watched the steaming cup of coffee across from him, picked it up, and slowly took a sip, his gaze inadvertently drifting toward a nearby potted plant.
