Who is Playing the Love Development Game in Gundam

Chapter 167: Chapter 167: Successful Handholding

The shuttle's speed exceeded He Kui's expectations, and they reached Mendel's research building in under an hour.

"We're here."

Serena stood up and gestured for He Kui to follow.

"You're coming too?" He Kui asked, puzzled as Serena stood by the door.

"Of course, it's quite large inside, and you might get lost."

"You've been here before."

"Yes, not long ago."

She had come after He Kui mentioned Mendel.

"Though we didn't find much, let's go."

With that, the two entered Mendel's research building.

"It's surprising there's still oxygen."

"Mendel's power system is still operational, but only on emergency power."

"No one came to take over?"

Though Mendel was abandoned, some basic ecological systems and electricity remained, not too difficult to fix.

"I heard the company went bankrupt soon after losing its heir, and this place was sold off to pay debts. Technically, it's under the Atlantic Federation's management now."

"Atlantic Federation."

It seemed they didn't want to manage it either.

Understandably, reviving the site only to be attacked by ZAFT wasn't appealing; better to focus on the lunar Tomir base.

As He Kui mused, he released his mechanical owl.

"Is it just us here?"

He Kui's gaze lingered on the various facilities in the research institute, all related to gene cultivation. Though he understood them, he couldn't use them.

"There should be others, mostly refugees, but not many."

Talking, they reached deeper into the institute.

Still surrounded by equipment, but this area had many computers, likely for office work and data analysis.

"Did you check these computers?"

"Yes, nothing valuable, just a name 'Super Coordinator,' everything else is blank, probably deleted."

"Who?"

"I'd like to know too."

Serena stood in the doorway, frustrated.

"This place isn't as simple as it seems; perhaps the incident wasn't an accident, just..."

Just how did He Kui know, Serena wondered, her gaze growing curious.

"Did you enter there?"

Understanding what Serena left unsaid, He Kui pointed to a heavy steel door ahead.

"No, we only looked last time, and the security system here is quite robust."

Hearing this, He Kui pulled a Haro from his backpack, connecting it to the door's system, and began swiftly hacking with the onboard keyboard.

"Director He came prepared."

Impressed by He Kui's skillful actions, Serena remarked, thinking they'd be leaving soon.

"Sort of."

He Kui hoped this rare physical adventure would yield something worthwhile. Not long after, the door opened with a swoosh, and the smell of disinfectant and metal wafted over them.

"Judging by the door's activation record, there shouldn't be anyone alive in there. Let's go."

He Kui released another mechanical owl to map the interior as he entered.

Serena hesitated briefly before following.

Inside was a scene out of a nightmare, with steel artificial wombs and dead infants floating in nutrient solution.

Serena paled at the sight, and He Kui stepped closer, gently taking her hand.

Warmth spread from He Kui's palm to Serena's soft hand.

"You..."

Serena's fingers twitched, but she didn't pull away, asking softly, "Aren't you afraid of humanity's atrocities here?"

Though Serena hadn't understood the Super Coordinator project earlier, seeing the dead fetuses and massive artificial womb, she guessed the process.

The Super Coordinators were likely gene-tweaked individuals, devoid of maternal influence, and these were failed experiments. Using human lives for experimentation was a severe violation of ethics and morality, regardless of legal implications.

"It's okay, it's in the past."

He Kui comforted her as they continued deeper.

Soon, they reached a lab.

The decor was similar to other areas, but this room had more computers, instruments, and chemicals.

"There are some records of Dr. Hibiki's experiments here."

Serena said from a central computer.

"Let me see."

He Kui approached excitedly, but the screen held no cloning information, only basic data on artificial wombs.

Hundreds of failed experiment records indicated a terrifying death toll.

Kira, created amid the lives of hundreds, understandably suffered a breakdown.

"Someone's coming."

He Kui's sudden statement broke the lab's silence, echoing softly.

"Is it from the alert system you set up?"

"Yes, three people, but they're unarmed, likely refugees who entered with us."

He Kui pressed twice on his wristband, prompting Serena to grab his hand.

"What are you doing?"

Serena's brows furrowed.

"Just tracking, I won't harm innocents."

"Alright."

Relieved, Serena started to pull back, but He Kui held her hand.

"Do I seem that scary, sister?"

He Kui teased, raising an eyebrow.

"I don't know."

Serena's cheeks flushed, and she rolled her eyes at him.

With the door sealed, the newcomers couldn't enter. Besides setting the owl to alert mode, He Kui took no further action.

Unfortunately, the cloning data was scarce, and information on the Ultimate Coordinators was limited.

He found two photos—one of a golden-haired man and a golden-haired child, both serious, likely Mu's father.

The other was Dr. Hibiki's family of four.

Nothing useful yet.

But seeing young Cagalli in the photo sparked an idea in He Kui.

Cagalli, technically Dr. Hibiki's daughter, might be key if...

But accessing the Orb princess was nearly impossible through official channels.

From his memories, she appeared only after Orb exploded.

Without Freedom and Justice, who knew what might happen?

Maybe he should try blowing up Orb's mass driver?

But that seemed impossible; blowing up Uzumi might be simpler.

"What are you thinking?"

Serena's question pulled He Kui back from his thoughts.

"Nothing, let's go."

The world had diverged significantly from the original story; he needed to gather information on Orb and the Earth Alliance.

Lacus would be a good channel.

"Acting all mysterious, do you know Dr. Hibiki's children?"

"No."

"Right, you're about the same age, but I wonder how those kids are doing now."

Serena hadn't considered that Kira was Dr. Hibiki's Super Coordinator.

Few would, really.

And if it were that easy to find information here, it would be naive.

How did Cruzer know so much?

"Thank you for your efforts today, Miss Serena. Shall we return?"

At the door, He Kui extended his hand to Serena, his gentle voice soothing.

"Hmm."

Shaking off her curiosity about the Hibiki children, Serena took a few steps towards the young man ahead.

"I told you to call me sister, and I was just startled, not that timid!"

Holding He Kui's hand, Serena felt her sisterly auth

ority threatened and changed the subject.

"Have they left?"

"They're gone."

He Kui glanced at his wristband before opening the heavy isolation door.

Such a grim place wasn't suitable for romantic talks.
