Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Taming the Wolf Pack
By the time David arrived, the militia was already clashing with the wolves.
Although the camp was surrounded by a wooden palisade and the militia wielded wooden spears, there had already been several casualties.
"Thrust!"
The knight squire's shout rang out.
The refugee militia instinctively thrust their spears forward, but their coordination was severely lacking. Some reacted too quickly, thrusting their spears prematurely, while others hesitated, failing to react at all.
As a result, only one gray wolf was pushed back, while several others leaped through the gaps in the spear line, pouncing onto the refugees and biting at the nearest targets.
The knight squires rushed to assist, but these gray wolves possessed strength comparable to the squires, resulting in a stalemate.
Fortunately, among the refugees were some experienced squires and hunters.
When the gray wolves charged into the crowd, the hunters, armed with daggers, lunged forward, slicing into the wolves' vulnerable bellies and spilling their entrails.
Whoosh—
Some hunters, skilled with bows, loosed arrows. The sharp whistle of an arrow cutting through the air was followed by a wolf dropping lifelessly to the ground, an arrow embedded in its eye.
The wolf pack's attack unified the refugees. Even those who had been concealing their skills now stepped forward. Squires and hunters alike revealed themselves, buying precious time.
Finally, David arrived with the knights.
Awooo—
The Snow Wolf let out a fierce roar.
The gray wolves were ordinary beasts, with strength akin to knight squires, but the Snow Wolf, a lower-ranked magical beast capable of challenging a formal knight, exuded an aura of dominance. The wolf pack began to waver under the Snow Wolf's presence.
The knight squires took advantage of the disarray to slay several gray wolves.
The Snow Wolf darted through the battlefield, reaching the frontlines and standing face-to-face with the wolf pack.
"It's the lord! The lord is here!"
At first, the refugees panicked at the sound of the wolf's howl, but when they saw the massive white wolf bearing their lord, their faces lit up with hope.
The refugees had come to expect extraordinary deeds from their lord. To them, only a majestic creature like the Snow Wolf could befit someone as benevolent and powerful as the Frost Wolf Duke.
However, the refugees from the Crystal Song Kingdom reacted differently.
Their pupils shrank in disbelief as they recognized the Snow Wolf—it resembled the one ridden by the Ice Wolf Great Knight!
One particular scout, who had previously reported to Hobbs, turned pale. He knew Hobbs had entered Frost Wolf Ridge but had disappeared shortly afterward.
Now, seeing this Snow Wolf under the control of the Frost Wolf Duke, he couldn't deny the horrifying truth: Hobbs must have been defeated, and his Snow Wolf tamed.
But how? Hobbs was an Earth Knight, and Frost Wolf Ridge supposedly had no such warriors. How could the Frost Wolf Duke have slain him?
As disbelief overwhelmed him, the presence of the Snow Wolf served as undeniable evidence.
Awooo—
The gray wolves howled, parting to reveal a much larger wolf, almost as big as the Snow Wolf.
This was the pack leader—a Gray Wolf King with strength equal to a formal knight, capable of commanding the entire pack.
"So, you're the one," David muttered, narrowing his eyes.
With a signal, the Snow Wolf charged toward the pack, while David activated his Frost Giant Wolf bloodline and drew his knight's sword.
The Snow Wolf rampaged through the pack. Compared to the Snow Wolf, the gray wolves were far smaller and weaker. Any wolf caught directly in its path was sent flying, unable to resist.
However, the sheer number of gray wolves—hundreds of them—soon encircled the Snow Wolf, halting its advance.
Awooo—
The Gray Wolf King howled deeply from its position near the rear of the pack.
Suddenly, its eyes flashed silver, its expression freezing momentarily before going rigid.
In its spiritual world, a Frost Giant Wolf appeared, roaring as an overwhelming pressure bore down on the Gray Wolf King.
Frost Wolf Pact!
David's eyes glowed silver as he murmured the incantation.
When the light in his eyes faded, the Frost Wolf Soul had already left a spiritual imprint within the Gray Wolf King's mind. The pact was complete!
With the Frost Wolf Pact, David had become the ultimate wolf tamer. Neither the Snow Wolf nor the Gray Wolf King could resist him.
David had deliberately sent the Snow Wolf into the fray to draw the Gray Wolf King to the frontlines, where he could close the distance and enact the pact.
Awooo—
The Gray Wolf King slowly regained awareness, letting out a commanding howl.
In response, the gray wolves abruptly ceased their attacks, retreating from their positions.
Seeing this, David shouted for the knight squires and militia to fall back as well.
Within moments, a clear divide formed on the battlefield, with the gray wolves retreating on one side and the knights and refugees on the other. Only David and the Gray Wolf King remained in the center.
"It worked," David whispered, exhaling deeply.
To everyone's astonishment, David dismounted the Snow Wolf and approached the Gray Wolf King.
"Master David!" the Grey Wolf Knight called out, startled.
Then, recalling how David had subdued the Snow Wolf, he suppressed his urge to intervene, standing watchfully instead.
Under the tense gazes of the refugees, David stopped before the Gray Wolf King.
To their collective shock, the mighty Gray Wolf King lowered its noble head before him.
"The lord has tamed the Gray Wolf King?" a knight squire murmured in disbelief.
If he hadn't witnessed it himself, he would never have believed what he saw. The lord hadn't even fought, yet the Gray Wolf King had submitted.
"This must be the power of the Frost Giant Wolf bloodline, capable of commanding all wolves!"
Another squire's eyes shone with awe as he gazed at David.
The refugees, realizing what had happened, felt a surge of emoti
on boiling within them.
In unison, they erupted into cheers:
"Long live the lord! Long live the Frost Wolf family!"
