Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Wizarding World
The library was located on the fiftieth floor of the Central Black Tower. Without the floating spell, Richard had to climb from the first floor, leaving his legs weak by the time he reached the top. Standing at the library's entrance, Richard tidied his appearance before striding in.
The library was vast, with countless ten-meter-high bookshelves stretching as far as the eye could see.
Suddenly, a palm-sized fairy with wings appeared before Richard.
The fairy was strikingly beautiful, looking like a miniature person with wings.
The fairy circled Richard once.
"You're a new student, aren't you? Show me your crystal ball," she said.
Richard complied, retrieving the crystal ball from his bag. The fairy lightly tapped it, causing a faint glow.
With Richard's information confirmed, the fairy floated in front of him, her expression a mix of cuteness and seriousness.
"New student Richard, I'm Fina, the library's curator. To borrow books, touch your crystal ball to the book's number. I'll record your borrowings. Also, no roughhousing, loud noises, or any spells besides the floating spell in the library. Violations will get you expelled. Severe cases will result in a ban from the library."
"Got it. How do I find the books I want?" Richard asked, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of books.
Fina pointed to Richard's crystal ball.
"I've uploaded all books you can borrow to it. To access more, improve your skills. Each apprentice level grants access to more books. Once you're a wizard, you can borrow any book in the library."
Probing the crystal ball with his mental power, Richard saw a list of books appear before him.
"Any other questions?" Fina asked.
Richard snapped back to reality. "No, thank you."
"Then I'll be off."
With that, Fina sketched a glowing portal in the air with her arm and flew through it.
"Amazing magic," Richard remarked, diving into the vast library to find his desired book.
Guided by the information, Richard quickly located what he sought—"Gazetteer of the Wizarding World."
Unlike spellbooks that required magic stones to borrow, this guide to the wizarding world was free, and Richard needed to understand this new world most of all.
Settling in a library corner, Richard began unraveling the mysteries of the wizarding world.
The wizarding world dwarfed his previous life's Earth, with nearly a thousand wizarding academies, each led by at least a Level 4 Grand Wizard.
The howling winds of the far east, the vast desert in the southwest, the magnetic floating island at the continent's center, the sky-reaching ice walls at the world's edge... As Richard turned the pages, a colorful and majestic wizarding world unfolded before him.
Yet, he noticed blank areas of varying sizes on the wizarding continent map, marked as uninhabited. According to the map, these places had no wizarding academies or even ordinary people.
"What's going on here?" Richard wondered, searching for answers in the book.
Eventually, in the history section, Richard found his answer.
The wizarding world's history was divided into three phases: the Primitive Era, the Enlightenment, and the current Expansion Phase.
During the Primitive Era, wizards worked alone, carving out domains in the wilderness of knowledge. Wizards weren't yet the world's rulers; sea beasts and sky-dwelling dragons were far superior.
The second phase, the Enlightenment, saw wizards unite, forming associations and schools based on shared research interests. Wizarding families emerged, strengthening bonds through bloodlines and contracts.
In this era, wizards supplanted dragons as the land's rulers and reached agreements with sea beasts.
By the Enlightenment's end, wizards had explored the entire world, except for the magic-laden sea depths and elementally stormy poles. The wizarding world was completely divided among them.
With the world finite and wizards ever-increasing, an unsolvable problem led to wizard wars.
Schools of wizards unleashed their full might, crushing rival wizards. Elemental floods from the Evocation School obliterated wizard towers; the Necromancy School's undead were as numerous as sand; the Soul School summoned sea monsters; Alchemy's golem armies marched unendingly; and the Occult School's curses killed invisibly.
The war turned a third of the continent into wastelands and created the Circumcontinental Archipelago.
Ultimately, the leaders of the five major schools formed an agreement, ending the war and establishing the Council of Truth to govern the wizarding world. These leaders became known as the Truth Wizards.
Thus, the wizarding world entered the third phase, the Expansion.
The war led to the loss of countless knowledge but also birthed unprecedented technologies.
The maturation of astral navigation allowed wizards to conduct cross-world expeditions with floating cities. Planar wars required constant wizard reinforcements. The family model produced wizards too slowly, often taking centuries for dozens, far from meeting the needs of planar wars.
Thus, wizarding academies emerged.
Closing the book, Richard understood the academy's harsh rules.
"So all wizarding academies are essentially military schools, and all academy wizards are born for planar wars."
Planar wars and astral navigation stirred Richard's heart.
In his past life, Richard was fascinated by the stars, dreaming of harmonious coexistence and exploring the infinite cosmos.
Ironically, what he never saw in his past life, he encountered after transmigrating.
"I must become a wizard."
Richard's eyes shone with determination. Before, he lived merely to survive.
Now, he had a dream!
Leaving the library, night had fallen.
At the dormitory entrance, he met Ellie. Her hair and burns had fully healed, and she wore a fitted dress.
The academy had a hospital, capable of healing anything from colds to limb loss. Even death could be remedied if one had enough magic stones to pay the necromancers for a transformation into a lich.
"Hi, Richard. Where have you been? Want to try some freshly baked bread?"
Ellie greeted Richard, holding a bag of warm, fragrant baguettes, offering him one.
Richard accepted it, the rich aroma waking his stomach.
Gurgle!
The residential zone seemed to have many restaurants and bakeries.
"I was at the library. You should visit too; there's a 'Gazetteer of the Wizarding World' worth reading," Richard said, mouth full of bread.
"Okay, I'll check it out tomorrow."
Ellie looked at Richard, her cheeks inexplicably reddening.
As the saying goes, clothes make the man. In his new attire, Richard's once-malnourished appearance had mostly recovered over the days.
Now, with his black hair, handsome face, and slightly slender build, Richard exuded a scholarly charm.
All this fell right into Ellie's preferences.
Not to mention Richard had played the hero on the airship.
Recalling the glimpse through the door crack, Ellie's cheeks grew warm.
"Hmm, be sure to read the history section," Richard said, swallowing the bread, eyes firm as he patted Ellie.
Ellie shivered slightly.
"Okay! I'll definitely read it."
Back in his room, Richard eagerly took out the basic meditation manual.
A prerequisite for becoming a wizard was mental power, and meditation was the most common way to enhance it.
