Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Power of Spells
Let's rewind to before the latch was broken.
As Richard exited the viewing cabin, he immediately saw the leader of the Black Bear Gang trying to break down the door.
This leader, named Rayleed, was the son of a gang leader in the Plantagenet Kingdom's Purple Thorn Territory before being chosen as a prospective apprentice.
Rayleed had a natural advantage with his strong physique. By age twelve, he became a knight's squire, and by fifteen, he was on the cusp of knighthood.
Given a few more years of training, Rayleed could become a full-fledged knight within five years. With further training, he might become a senior knight by his thirties.
A senior knight at that age would be considered a genius, even in the Plantagenet Kingdom.
The king would likely grant him a title, and noble families would vie to marry into Rayleed's family.
But Rayleed was chosen.
The will of the wizards was not to be defied. Even as the son of a gang leader, or even a prince, he had to become a wizard apprentice.
Rayleed's father felt a pang of regret for him, but Rayleed himself did not.
During the selection ceremony, seeing the king and nobles bowing to the wizard, a fire ignited in Rayleed's heart.
A fire called ambition.
He wanted to become a wizard and wield extraordinary power.
Once on the airship, Rayleed quickly discovered that the wizards were indifferent to his actions, only concerned with whether the apprentices survived until the exam.
With this understanding, he soon gathered a group of followers and began his tyrannical rule.
Anything he desired came into his possession; anyone he fancied ended up in his bed.
Many nobles detested his actions, but none dared to stop him.
Aside from not provoking nobles, the main reason was that Rayleed was a knight's squire.
No noble would confront a knight's squire over commoners.
...
Bang! Bang! Rayleed grinned as he pounded on the door, eager to sample the woman inside, whom he had never seen before and was likely a virgin.
The thought of savoring such a treat after breaking down the door made his blood boil.
But as he continued pounding, he noticed a figure in his peripheral vision.
The person appeared somewhat frail and not very tall, with black hair framing a handsome yet slightly weak face.
Gulp.
Rayleed suddenly stopped pounding.
"You guys keep at it," he ordered his lackeys, turning his attention to Richard.
Richard felt a chill run down his spine as Rayleed stopped. Something disgusting seemed imminent.
"Little beauty, are you one of the last to board?"
Rayleed's gaze was lecherous as he eyed Richard, his scarlet tongue unconsciously licking his lips.
He was not only lecherous but also swung both ways.
And Richard was just his type.
Richard glanced behind him, seeing no one else.
It seemed Rayleed was indeed referring to him.
There was nothing more to say.
Richard turned his head back, his face darkening.
A mix of anger and disgust surged within him.
"Die!"
With a cold expression, Richard raised his hand, channeling magic into his fingertips, transforming it into a ghostly blue light that shot like a meteor at Rayleed's chest.
Zero-ring spell: Magic Missile
In an instant, Rayleed felt as if he had been struck in the chest by a knight's warhammer, sent flying with a pained and contorted expression.
"Wizard! Wizard!"
His lackeys, terrified by the sight, scrambled backward, but Richard wasn't about to let them escape.
"You too!"
Richard's face remained cold as ghostly blue lights shot from his fingertips, striking the lackeys with precision.
These lackeys, weaker than Rayleed, couldn't dodge the missiles and fell to the ground, groaning in pain.
Fortunately, Richard hadn't lost his head to anger; the missiles targeted only their legs.
As long as no one died, everything would be manageable.
Richard advanced slowly, ghostly blue light flickering at his fingertips.
At that moment, Richard resembled a judge from the underworld, ready to use his azure missiles to judge the world's sins.
One step, two steps, three steps.
Finally, Rayleed, who had been playing dead, scrambled to his feet and fled to the other end of the airship.
"Wizard! Wizard, someone is..."
Before he could finish, a magic missile struck between his legs.
In an instant, the sound of an eggshell cracking seemed to echo in the air.
Overwhelmed by the intense pain, Rayleed's eyes rolled back, and he passed out.
But Richard was still unsatisfied; the disgusting feeling lingered like a fly he couldn't swat away.
So he quickly approached and stomped hard on Rayleed twice.
"Damn pervert! Bashing my door, bullying my roommate, and you dare mess with me!"
"Richard!"
Richard turned to see Ellie staring at him in a daze.
"Oh, Ellie, are you okay?"
Richard greeted her casually, wiping the blood off his shoes on Rayleed's clothes.
"Did you do all this?"
Ellie looked around in disbelief, seeing the once-feared Rayleed defeated.
And it was all done by Richard, who had been with her these past days.
A sense of absurdity overwhelmed Ellie, making her feel like she was in a dream.
When did he construct his magic reflux?
The wizards performing the airship maintenance arrived belatedly, while the nobles in the viewing cabin, drawn by the Black Bear Gang's cries, also came to watch the spectacle.
"My goodness, that commoner actually defeated Rayleed."
"Rayleed is a knight's squire, a formidable figure even among us!"
"Does that commoner have a magical artifact? But without magic stones, such artifacts are useless."
"Could he have already constructed his magic reflux and become a full-fledged wizard apprentice?"
"How is that possible! A commoner can't advance so quickly!"
The nobles' whispers reached Richard's ears. Amidst the disdain and shock, the mention of magic stone-driven artifacts piqued Richard's interest.
Magic artifacts? Richard made a mental note, realizing this information could be crucial to his entrance exam, and he needed to handle it carefully.
Soon, a female wizard arrived from the other end of the airship, finally appearing on the scene.
She looked about thirty, with an ordinary appearance and no apparent physical mutations... except for the mouths filled with sharp teeth on her palms.
After inspecting the scene, the wizard tossed the injured aside and approached Richard.
"I am Biliana. Who did this?"
Ellie, witnessing this, quickly tried to defend Richard:
"Wizard, these people tried to break into the room, so..."
But Richard interrupted her before she could finish.
"Wizard, I have no idea who did this. They were already lying here when I arrived."
Richard looked at Biliana calmly, as if he truly had nothing to do with the injured men.
Biliana glanced deeply at him, a slight smile curling her lips.
"Very well, it seems a kind ghost gave these little punks a good beating. But it was a bit heavy-handed; if caught, it might face punishment."
With that, Biliana patted Richard and used her levitation spell to carry the injured away.
Ellie watched, dumbfounded by the unfolding events.
"Richard, how could you dare..."
Ellie clutched her chest, feeling her heart race.
Deceiving a wizard was a bold act. Not only did Richard do it, but he did it so clumsily.
But why did the wizard believe him?
Ellie's mind was a jumble until Richard led her back into their room, snapping her out of her daze.
"Richard, what just happened?"
Richard sat on a chair, a glint of wisdom in his eyes.
"Ellie, this is the wizards' game. On this airship, the wizards' rules are insurmountable lines for us, but for the wizards, they might be rules casually set over a meal.
While I did break the rules, Wizard Biliana thought I did well.
She didn't want to punish me.
So she asked that question."
Ellie muttered, "Who did all this? She can't possibly not know, but since the rules are meaningless to her, why ask?"
Richard smiled, a hint of self-mockery flashing across his face.
"Because there isn't just one wizard on this airship. She needed a reason to explain to the others.
Even if the reason is absurd."
To the wizards, an apprentice with severe injuries was worth only an absurd explanation."
