Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Advanced Meditation Technique
After leaving Jolord, Richard headed straight to the spell shop. Despite Jolord's dismissive attitude towards the competition rewards, Richard was determined to give it his all. After all, who wouldn't want a guaranteed promotion?
Due to the spread of the news, the spell shop was already crowded with well-informed wizard apprentices. These apprentices were among the more powerful ones, those with a chance to earn rewards from the competition.
"Make way, make way," Richard called out as he pushed through the crowd. Though the other apprentices wanted to resist, Richard, being an alchemical bloodline wizard apprentice, was physically stronger than them even without activating his bloodline.
Reaching the counter, Richard found the mechanical shopkeeper slowly processing academy coins and sending out scrolls through pneumatic tubes. The shopkeeper wouldn't step in to maintain order unless a spell duel broke out.
"What would you like to purchase?" the shopkeeper asked Richard mechanically.
"I want the advanced meditation technique."
The surrounding environment fell silent at his words.
Advanced meditation technique? Some apprentices dug at their ears, thinking they had misheard.
Someone was buying the advanced meditation technique worth ten thousand magic stones, equivalent to a million academy coins.
"Advanced meditation technique, priced at one million academy coins."
Richard said nothing more, calmly pulling bundles of academy coins from his magic pouch.
Every time he took out a bundle, an apprentice would rub their eyes in disbelief.
"This must be counterfeit!" an apprentice thought, shocked. "How could anyone afford the advanced meditation technique?"
Due to the sheer number of academy coins, the mechanical shopkeeper had to verify them in batches.
"Two hundred thousand academy coins confirmed."
"Two hundred thousand academy coins confirmed."
"Two hundred thousand academy coins confirmed."
...
The same announcement repeated five times, leaving the spell shop in stunned silence. Some apprentices who had just arrived were confused by the quiet.
What's going on? Why isn't anyone talking?
A nearby apprentice swallowed hard, suddenly remembering who this apprentice was.
"You're... Richard?"
Richard glanced at him, neither confirming nor denying.
"Richard? Is he that Richard?" apprentices whispered.
"Is he the Richard who was the first to kill a slave monster in the exam? The one who killed Holder?"
"I heard there used to be someone else selling focus potions in the commercial district, but since Richard started selling them, that person mysteriously vanished, not even leaving a corpse."
"Really..."
Richard ignored the whispers. With the scroll in hand, he left the spell shop, leaving only a graceful figure behind.
Reputation was just a name; Richard never cared for it.
Back in his room, Richard used the Miracle Furnace to extract the contents of the advanced meditation technique.
[Material: Knowledge Scroll]
[Extractable Information: Advanced Meditation Technique]
[Extraction Cost: 15 Mental Power]
[Proceed with Extraction?]
Richard chose to extract. Seconds later, a white glow appeared on the Miracle Furnace.
Absorbing the glow, Richard immediately attempted meditation. The advanced meditation technique was several times more complex than the intermediate one, with a staggering one hundred mental runes. However, Richard was no longer a novice, and he was well-versed in meditation techniques.
After a couple of failed attempts, Richard successfully entered meditation on the third try. The advanced meditation technique allowed him to remain in the sea of souls for eight hours.
Upon waking from meditation, Richard could feel the advanced technique's effects were several times stronger than the intermediate one. At this rate, in less than four months, he would reach the forty-point mental power threshold, becoming a senior wizard apprentice.
But Richard's ambitions went beyond that.
"With four years to go, at this rate, my mental power could reach forty-five points before the exchange competition. Although it's far from the limit for an apprentice, it's relatively fast compared to others," Richard mused.
The maximum mental power for wizard apprentices was 49.9 points. Apprentices at this level were called limit apprentices. Once at this level, further meditation was futile. They needed the wizard promotion ritual to elevate their life level to a higher plane.
After the transition, apprentices would become wizards, experiencing a drastic power increase.
Despite the mere 0.1 difference between 49.9 and 50 points, even a newly promoted wizard could easily defeat three limit apprentices.
Once fully adapted, a wizard would view limit apprentices as slightly stronger ordinary humans.
Time flew by, and two years passed in the blink of an eye.
In the laboratory, Richard carefully observed a dissected insect under a magnifying glass.
Through the lens, the insect's muscular structure was clearly visible.
As he observed, Richard jotted down notes.
"This muscle structure of the crystal arrow bug is fascinating. Layers upon layers of muscle fibers stack, and when charged, they deform like bowstrings, storing as much energy as possible."
Richard marveled at the crystal arrow bug.
Though small, when in motion, the crystal arrow bug shot like an arrow from a crossbow, easily piercing through steel.
Wizards excelled at discovering knowledge from various sources and applying it.
Upon seeing this muscle structure, Richard immediately thought of his own body.
Wizards modifying their bodies was a common practice. To gain power, wizards had no qualms about shedding their physical limitations.
"Grow it and then transplant?"
Richard pondered. This modification resembled Jolord's creation of synthetic beasts. When crafting these beasts, Jolord didn't just sew together different limbs. To enhance combat power, he cultivated muscles, skin, and even bones himself.
But Richard was hesitant to use this method.
Setting aside the difficulty of targeted cultivation, the idea of muscle transplant rejection and its impact on daily activities was unacceptable for Richard.
Human muscles, while not the best, were certainly the most suited for daily life.
The crystal arrow bug's muscle structure, while advantageous in some aspects, also had its drawbacks.
"Sigh, it's a pity my teacher doesn't have flesh magic to temporarily alter flesh structure. Otherwise, the bug's muscle structure would significantly boost combat power."
Leaving the laboratory, Richard proceeded to the training room for his body adaptation exercises.
Thanks to years of relentless training, Richard's body could now withstand elemental damage from fire, lightning, and ice spells below 45 energy levels.
This was roughly the limit of what Richard could achieve at his current stage.
While the body adaptation could continually enhance resistance to various damages, it also required a sufficient physical foundation.
To draw an analogy, the body was like the material of a machine, adaptation potions acted as lubricants, and external stimuli served as energy sources.
Though a machine could operate with energy supply, excessive operation would wear down or damage the material.
The same logic applied to the human body.
According to Jolord's estimates, wizard apprentices could train their body adaptation up to 50 energy levels. Beyond that point, their life core risked collapsing.
At that stage, survival would be a stroke of luck, let alone adaptation.
After completing a training cycle, Richard wiped himself down and left the training room, planning to return to his room to read some magic books.
But as he stepped out, he saw Jolord approaching.
"Richard, I have a task for you."
