Chapter 97: Chapter 97: The NTR Command Seal
With sheer force of will, Jeanne forcefully resisted the magical compulsion driving her body. No matter what, Jeanne could never bring herself to harm Roy.
Of course, the significant drain on her mana from earlier clashes with Okita Souji was also a contributing factor.
The two of them stood there, separated by a barrier, locked in an unspoken standoff.
Roy's piercing gaze was fixed firmly on Jeanne—not the corrupted "Black Jeanne" she appeared to be but the pure Jeanne d'Arc he had once known.
Jeanne, on the other hand, bit her lip and avoided his gaze. Her eyes darted elsewhere, unwilling to meet his. But under the binding force of the Command Seal, she could neither strike him nor leave his sight. She stood frozen, forced to endure his unyielding stare, which burned like the scorching sun, making her restless and uneasy.
"Do you really have nothing to say to me?" Roy finally broke the silence, his voice tinged with growing frustration.
"Am I so insignificant to you?"
"No! That's not it!" Jeanne blurted, her voice trembling as she vehemently denied his words.
But as soon as she finished, a deep bitterness clouded her face. "It's just... I'm sorry..."
She knew he had seen through her disguise. Their dream encounter had already confirmed everything.
The truth, it seemed, had been laid bare from the moment of their first fateful meeting. That night, her unusual behavior, born out of guilt, had betrayed her. The hurried "I'm sorry" she muttered as she fled must have been the seed that led to her exposure.
Jeanne had no intention of denying it now. There was no need to hide when the truth was so glaringly obvious.
Yet, what could she possibly say at this point?
Years ago, she had broken her promise to him. She had left his side without explanation. Only Roy could truly understand how deeply that betrayal had hurt him.
Now, she was nothing more than a Servant—a fleeting existence destined to return to the Throne of Heroes. Any promises she made would inevitably be broken once again.
Her only option was a hollow apology.
"Roy, I won't act against you of my own will, but neither can I offer you anything in return. The guilt of breaking my promise will stay with me forever. Your hatred of me is justified... perhaps you should be the one to end me. If it brings you any relief, let me pay for my sins with my life."
She let out a heavy sigh, her eyes closing slowly as layers of complexity clouded her expression.
It had been her, after all, who had vowed to stay by his side forever.
And it was also her who had broken that vow and walked away.
It was only natural for Roy to harbor resentment.
Jeanne felt a sliver of solace knowing he was doing well now, surrounded by people who cared for him. That alone was enough to fulfill her reason for manifesting in this world. If her death could ease his pain, she would gladly accept it.
Yet, with every word she spoke, Roy's face grew darker and more foreboding.
"Repent? Pay for your sins? Let me end you?"
What nonsense was this woman spouting?
"Do you think the reason I've been waiting for you was to exact revenge?"
Jeanne's eyes fluttered open in surprise. "Wasn't it?"
She had long since understood that Roy carried a deep well of malice—one born from a lifetime of cruelty inflicted upon him by others. In her mind, it was only natural for him to despise her after she had abandoned him. If ending her life would give him peace, she was ready to accept it.
But when their eyes met, Jeanne found herself speechless.
Roy's gaze burned with searing anger, yes, but there was more—something far more intricate. His emotions were a complex blend of longing, nostalgia, and a hope she couldn't quite decipher.
She had no idea what he truly wanted.
Before she could gather the courage to ask, an explosive voice shattered the tense atmosphere.
"You two... You've got to be kidding me! Lancer!" cried Tadayemon, his voice nearly cracking from rage. "I don't know what you're hiding from me, but I never thought you'd side with that traitor—and right in front of me, no less!"
The veins in his forehead throbbed with fury as his face turned a deep shade of red.
This was intolerable! The gall!
How dare his own Servant, knowing full well his hatred for that artificial lifeform, act all lovey-dovey with him? That suffocating air of romantic tension, those sidelong glances—were they flirting in his presence?!
"By the second Command Seal, I order you—Lancer! Kill him!"
Without hesitation, Tadayemon raised his hand, activating the second mark of the Command Seal. The glowing sigil on his hand flared with light.
Jeanne's expression shifted instantly. The first Command Seal's power had already strained her limits. A second one would completely overwhelm her Lancer-class magic resistance!
"Roy..." she whispered.
"Don't worry!" Roy smirked, his voice laced with dark amusement.
He was furious about the interruption, but now he could finally strike. "I've been waiting for this moment, Tadayemon!"
His piercing gaze fell on Tadayemon's right hand. Through the bandages wrapped around it, he could clearly see the Command Seals hidden underneath, courtesy of his runic vision.
With a roar of laughter, Roy activated his Mystic Eyes.
"In the name of your Command Seal, I order you—Lancer, retrieve the Lesser Grail for me!"
With a sudden burst of light, the second Command Seal on Tadayemon's hand dissipated. Its power surged into Jeanne, overriding his command and binding her to Roy's will instead.
Jeanne hesitated for only a moment. Her body moved on instinct, turning toward the battlefield where Blackened Saber and Okita Souji were locked in combat. Without a word, she leapt into the fray, her twin pistols firing relentlessly at the corrupted King of Knights.
"Tch!" Blackened Saber scowled.
Taking on Okita Souji alone was annoying enough, but Jeanne's arrival had changed the dynamic entirely. Even she, with her immense strength, began to feel the mounting pressure.
"Damn it!"
Tadayemon's face twisted with panic.
The moment Roy's Mystic Eyes had locked onto his Command Seals, he knew it was over. As their creator, no one understood their devastating power better than he did. Those eyes were capable of overriding any magical construct, a feat unparalleled in the history of magecraft.
By the time he realized his mistake, it was too late. Roy had turned his Command Seal against him.
"I swear I'll kill you!" Tadayemon snarled, his fists clenched in fury.
Roy ignored him entirely, his attention focused elsewhere.
"Archer, now!" he barked into his rune-engraved communicator.
In response, an arrow streaked across the city skyline, whistling as it closed the distance in mere moments.
Its target? Blackened Saber.
