Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Three Versus One
Black Saber's expression shifted as a violent gust of wind approached. Without hesitation, she leapt backward in a dramatic arc.
She thought she had dodged the incoming arrow, but to her dismay, the arrow curved mid-air and resumed its pursuit.
"A tracking arrow!"
Her face darkened, realizing the gravity of the situation. This was no ordinary projectile—it would not stop until it hit its mark.
Raising her sword, she prepared to slice the incoming silver-white arrow. Yet before she could act, twin lances pierced through the air toward her, a seamless attack aimed precisely at her exposed neck and side.
Jeanne d'Arc had exploited that fleeting opening.
Watching from a distance, Chikage felt his pride and fury flare as if someone had slapped him in the face.
How dare this Lancer show such resolve now of all times!
It was unmistakable—Jeanne wasn't holding back. Bolstered by the Command Seal's magical reinforcement, her strikes came with deadly precision and force.
Black Saber reluctantly abandoned her plan to destroy the arrow. Twisting her wrist, she redirected her energy and slashed downward with a blade infused with seething black-red mana.
Her sword cleaved through Jeanne's twin lances with a resonant crack.
Facing three opponents simultaneously, Black Saber could no longer afford to conserve her energy.
"Now!"
At that moment, Okita Souji surged forward, her footfalls silent and swift. Like a phantom, she closed the distance and appeared at Black Saber's flank, her katana slashing toward her left hand—the hand clutching the radiant Holy Grail.
Okita's attack was a calculated strike, perfectly timed to exploit Black Saber's transition between attacks.
"This time, she's done for!"
Or so Okita believed.
To her shock, Black Saber, without even glancing at her, twisted her body instinctively, narrowly evading the blade.
"Damn it! Does everyone dodge Shukuchi these days?"
Okita's frustration boiled over.
It was the third time her supposedly unstoppable skill had failed her. First Bazett, then Cu Chulainn, and now Black Saber—her track record was embarrassing.
The relentless silver arrow re-entered the fray, homing in on Black Saber's back. Once again, Black Saber seemed almost omniscient, flipping mid-air to avoid it.
"She possesses the Instinct skill," Roy's voice resonated in Okita's mind through telepathic communication. "Even after being corrupted, its effects remain potent. Sneak attacks are almost useless against her. You'll have to overwhelm her directly."
Okita clenched her fists in realization. It made sense—those honed instincts rendered her precision techniques ineffective.
"Even corrupted and deprived of the Grail's power, that Saber remains an utter monster," murmured Red Archer from a skyscraper thousands of meters away.
Perched atop the building, his sharp eyes surveyed the battle.
"She's familiar to you?" Rin Tohsaka asked, her curiosity piqued.
"More or less," Archer replied, not looking back. "She was my summoned servant during the Fifth Holy Grail War. But that's ancient history. It doesn't matter now."
Brushing off the topic, Archer nocked another arrow. The silver bolt gleamed as mana coalesced around it, transforming it into a deadly missile.
"Hound of the Red Plains," he muttered with a grim chuckle. "A homing arrow that never stops until it kills its target. Let's see her deal with two of these."
Drawing the bowstring taut, he loosed the arrow.
"Tonight's as good a time as any to get even for last night," he added with a wry grin.
Despite his bravado, Archer couldn't deny his injuries. If he had to face Black Saber directly, he doubted he could withstand even a single blow.
---
Near the blazing castle, Jeanne and Okita relentlessly pressed Black Saber. The homing arrow pursued her with unrelenting precision. Before long, a second identical arrow streaked through the air, joining the assault.
Cornered, Black Saber unleashed a burst of mana to push her attackers back, then spun mid-air, cutting down one arrow with a single stroke. With another deft maneuver, she shattered the second.
However, the repeated use of mana burst was visibly draining her reserves.
Jeanne, momentarily forced back, narrowed her eyes in contemplation before raising her twin lances high above her head.
"Souls lost on the battlefield, speak your laments—"
Her voice carried both divine mercy and profound sorrow.
"Step back—Tristesse de la Vierge!"
The once-pure weapon radiated a dark energy, brimming with unholy power.
Absorbing Jeanne's mana and the wrath of countless departed souls, the twin lances pulsed with an ominous black light, devouring even the faintest glimmers of hope. With a sweeping motion, she unleashed two crescent-shaped waves of energy that tore through the air, cutting through space with merciless precision.
"Got it!" Okita quickly retreated, leaving Black Saber to face the brunt of the attack.
Distracted by another arrow, Black Saber was a fraction too slow. The dual crescents locked onto her position and surged forward, aiming to annihilate everything in their path.
But Black Saber stood undaunted.
Gathering every ounce of her dwindling mana, she poured it into her blade, igniting it in a blood-red aura. With a mighty swing, she met the crescents head-on.
"Boom!"
The ground trembled violently, sending shockwaves that scattered debris far and wide.
Black Saber was thrown backward by the impact. Her armor was in tatters, and an X-shaped wound now marred her torso. She crashed to the ground, bouncing several times before coming to a halt.
From his vantage point, Chikage seethed.
"That traitorous Lancer used my mana to unleash her Noble Phantasm!"
Despite his fury, he dared not use another Command Seal. With Roy lurking nearby, it was too risky—he couldn't afford to lose his claim over Jeanne.
Meanwhile, Jeanne's attack had created an opportunity.
"Now!"
Okita appeared beside the wounded Black Saber like a ghost, her blade slicing toward the arm holding the Holy Grail.
Black Saber, struggling to recover, couldn't react in time. The katana bit into her arm, severing tendons and loosening her grip. The Grail slipped from her grasp, falling to the ground.
Okita snatched it up and leapt away, creating distance.
The battlefield fell silent.
"So... I was the one caught in a trap," Black Saber said, rising unsteadily. Despite her injuries, she carried herself with the dignity of a monarch.
"I planned to crush the Mage's Association and claim Lancer for myself."
Roy, standing at a distance, flashed a confident grin.
"But I figured you might interfere, so I prepared accordingly."
The real turning point, however, had been the Grail itself. With its power diminished, even Black Saber's strength had waned.
Jeanne's gaze flickered.
Claim Lancer? Is that what he's after?
