Allen the Reincarnated Merchant: A Plan to Get Rich in Another World

Chapter 81

The strange words Aria spoke sounded like the beautiful tones of a koto, flowing gently into my ears.

I didn’t understand the meaning of her words, but judging by the results, it was clear that Aria had successfully used healing magic.

“Elven healing magic uses the language of the healing spirit, Romelza. Romelza is a higher-ranked spirit than Naruka, the spirit that governs words and writing, which is why the language used for her arts is said to be beyond Naruka’s authority,” Eurua explained.

“So, that’s why we can’t understand the meaning of the words?” I asked.

“Yes. For us elves, healing magic is governed by the spirit Romelza, but among humans, it’s said to be under the command of the life god, Aro. Still, it seems the reason why divine words are unintelligible is the same,” Eurua continued.

Her explanation was clear and easy to follow.

In short, for elves, healing magic is controlled by the spirit Romelza, while for humans, it’s controlled by the god Aro. Both require learning specific languages to invoke healing spells—elven healing uses the higher spirit language, and human healing uses divine words. Because of this, it’s nearly impossible to learn healing magic on your own.

“So that’s why healers have to attend religious schools to learn the language. Makes sense—you can’t use magic if you don’t understand it,” I mused.

“That’s the same for elves. We don’t have large academies like human countries do, but small groups gather for instruction,” Eurua added.

“As for me, I had a personal tutor. It took quite some effort to learn,” Aria chimed in.

While those who can use healing magic in human countries are simply called healers, in the elven nation, they are referred to as sages.

“Both are forms of healing magic, but elven healing is said to cure diseases, while human healing focuses on mending injuries. Although they can perform similar tasks, their strengths differ slightly,” Eurua said.

“Interesting,” I replied, intrigued.

Both types of magic were impressive, but personally, I thought elven healing magic would be more desirable. The reason was simple: in this world, there were magical potions. These potions could substitute for human healing magic’s strength in treating injuries. With that in mind, elven healing magic, which cured diseases, seemed more useful.

“Can a human learn elven healing magic?” I asked.

“Who knows? It’s not like either is strictly forbidden, but they are not taught publicly… and until recently, relations between humans and elves weren’t exactly friendly. I suppose you’d have to try to find out,” Eurua replied.

If healing magic that could cure diseases existed, the medical capabilities of this world might even surpass Earth’s.

However, just as with any great power, healing magic seemed to be shrouded in secrecy, in both the human and elven worlds. It wasn’t widely known.

“…Would you be punished for using healing magic on someone of another race?” I asked, curious about the possible consequences.

“During wartime, there were laws like that, but I haven’t heard of anything like it recently,” Eurua responded.

“I can’t imagine the arrogant elves who call themselves sages lowering themselves to heal humans,” Aria muttered with a shrug.

It seemed that while healing magic was generally kept hidden, there was no punishment for using it on other races. According to Aria, though, most elves who were skilled in healing magic, or sages, were incredibly prideful and looked down on humans.

“Guess every world has people like that, huh…” I sighed.

“To be honest, elves pretty much lost the war against humans. At one point, the humans advanced as far as the outskirts of Gasha Forest,” Aria said.

The Kingdom of Kainriese, where we lived, was far from Gasha Forest, the homeland of the elves, and hadn’t been involved in war for several centuries. But it seemed conflict was frequent in the world of Asphial.

Aria explained that, although an internal conflict within the enemy saved the elves, the war itself had been a crushing defeat for them.

“Hey, Aria, if you’re willing, could you teach me some simple words?” I asked.

“Sure, I don’t mind. But in return…?” Aria smiled playfully.

“Of course, I’ll throw in some extra trading cards as payment.”

I didn’t know if a human like me could use elven magic, but it was worth a shot, so I decided to have Aria teach me.

…Of course, this could potentially become an international incident, but there were only three of us here, and none of us would leak the information.

While it was unlikely that I, a human, could learn elven healing magic, I figured I’d take advantage of my free time and study under Aria.
