Two figures jumped down alongside Ye Zian, one on each side—Anna and Lin Qianshan.

The other team members remained on top of the bus, shooting zombies in the distance to relieve the pressure on the three.

Thick black smoke billowed into the air, and the smell of roasting meat permeated the surroundings.

The three stood like barricades in front of the bus, blocking the advance of the zombies.

With every swing of Ye Zian's Tang sword, several zombies were cleaved in half.

Yet, even as the flames consumed their bodies, the zombies continued to move forward, oblivious to the pain.

At the center of the fortress, the Tower of Babel was once again enveloped in golden light, rising another level and expanding its area. The residents of the fortress had long since grown accustomed to this sight.

The city lord's divine power was beyond their comprehension.

After receiving reports from the other team members, Zhao Wanrong sat at her desk, unfazed, and casually replied, "Got it," before returning to her paperwork.

With the last zombie being crushed by Anna's wolf fang club, a near fifty-meter wall of fire stood before Xucheng Bridge, blocking any further zombies from advancing. No zombies dared to cross this fiery barrier.

The clothing on the zombies and the fat released from their burning bodies intensified the flames.

Ye Zian sat atop a bus to recover his stamina, while the others organized their gear, waiting for the next zombie wave.

Anna, sitting next to him, pulled out several large meat buns and began to eat them, oblivious to her surroundings, savoring the oily flavor.

Now that her attention was not as focused, upon seeing the charred corpses on the ground and smelling the aroma of roasted meat, the expressions of the surrounding team members appeared slightly uneasy. Lin Qianshan, too, had secretly retched several times and looked incredulously at Anna, who was enjoying her meal.

Noticing Lin Qianshan's gaze, Anna playfully offered her a large meat bun, asking, "What's wrong? Want one?"

Lin Qianshan quickly waved her hands in refusal, explaining, "No, no, I have my own."

"Hahaha!"

Anna laughed heartily, wrapping an arm around Lin Qianshan and saying, "Can't eat it now? Let me tell you, two years ago, when I was in North Africa…"

"Stop, stop, stop! I really don't want to hear it."

Lin Qianshan interrupted Anna, breaking free from her embrace and shifting to sit next to Ye Zian.

After this little episode, Lin Qianshan might not dare to eat roasted meat for several days.

Ye Zian looked at the horde of zombies, noticing Lin Qianshan leaning against him, and handed her a bottle of yogurt, saying, "This will help a bit; drink it to settle your stomach before we continue fighting."

"Mm-hmm."

Afterward, Ye Zian distributed the yogurt to the other team members.

Once everyone replenished their strength, they quietly observed the zombie horde. The horde neither retreated nor attacked; both sides remained in a stalemate, bounded by the wall of fire.

"City lord, what do you think these zombies are waiting for? Are they waiting for the flames to go out?"

A rather young team member suddenly asked, drawing everyone's attention to Ye Zian.

Ye Zian pondered for a moment and realized something was off about the horde.

These zombies lacked the typical bloodthirsty expressions and seemed to be under some form of control, almost as if they had gained some awareness.

Ordinary zombies would mindlessly rush to tear apart any humans they encountered; they wouldn't just sit quietly.

Could there be a mutated zombie among them?

Mutated zombies typically evolved after consuming a large amount of human flesh and blood, absorbing energy from the air.

Speaking of mutated zombies, Ye Zian recalled a specific one described in the book—a month after the apocalypse, Su Chen encountered a mutated zombie known as the Rampaging Brutal King on Xucheng Bridge.

"Roar!"

A thunderous roar shattered Ye Zian's thoughts, and all team members immediately stood up, grabbing their crossbows and cautiously searching for the source of the roar.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Accompanied by a series of vibrations, a humanoid zombie nearly two and a half meters tall appeared in the center of the bridge, its body packed with solid muscle, resembling a gorilla.

Though it walked on two legs, it used its hands to support itself while running, bounding toward them with ferocious intent.

Any zombies in its path were brutally knocked aside, and even the small cars along its route were crushed underfoot.

"Get to the vehicles and head to Wang Yan's supply base. Wait for me to return," Ye Zian ordered, gripping his Tang sword tightly, a serious expression on his face.

This zombie was the king of all zombies in Xucheng, and he never expected it to appear right now on Xucheng Bridge.

Ye Zian had initially thought this zombie king wouldn't show up until at least tomorrow night, coinciding with the influx of energy from another world. Under the blood moon, ability users and zombies would begin to undergo widespread evolution and awakening, which would trigger the emergence of the zombie king.

He never anticipated it would appear now.

While it wasn't as massive as described in the book, it was still not an opponent to be taken lightly.

Fully mutated zombies had all attributes above one hundred points, far beyond what the other team members could handle. Even Lin Qianshan would struggle to withstand the Rampaging Brutal King's ordinary attacks.

"Everyone, get in the vehicles!"

Understanding the situation, Anna commanded the team members to retreat from Xucheng Bridge. Meanwhile, Lin Qianshan's eyes glistened with concern as she approached Ye Zian and hugged him, saying softly, "Be careful."

Although she wanted to stay and fight alongside Ye Zian, she understood that remaining would only distract him from the battle.

As she watched the convoy gradually leave Xucheng Bridge, Ye Zian prepared for the upcoming fight.

Ignoring the burning wall of fire, the Rampaging Brutal King charged straight through, creating a path through the fifty-meter wall of flames.

The zombies behind the king followed suit, beginning to press the attack against Ye Zian.
