Chapter 71: Chapter 70: Zhao Wanrong's Daily Work
Some people were planting seeds obtained by Ye Zian, like potato and tomato seed cards, while others planted regular vegetable seeds brought by Chen Ruoxue from a seed company. After this round of work, the newcomers would go to the recruit team for An Ziyu's training in the afternoon.
The new team of over 2,000 members was divided into five groups by An Ziyu for phased training sessions. With the help of the search team members, each only had to train ten people each time. This arrangement ensured the stronghold's operations went uninterrupted without wasting training space.
"Greetings, Lord City Master."
Li Jue, upon seeing City Master Ye Zian approaching, hurriedly set down her work. Her petite frame moved energetically, like a little rabbit hopping joyfully to stand before him, and she began to report on the recent agricultural group's work.
Li Jue pointed to a field being harvested, where seven or eight members were bent over, cutting rice with scythes, and enthusiastically announced:
"Lord City Master, we can harvest the rice today. If we're quick, we can have rice by noon. Also, over there."
She pointed to a nearby clearing where about thirty members were digging and planting with hoes:
"That's where vegetables and fruits are being planted. Even though they're from ordinary seeds, they're growing twice as fast as before the apocalypse. I estimate they will be ready to harvest in only 10-15 days. By then, our stronghold could produce 80% of our own vegetables. If we expand the cleared land soon, we might become entirely self-sufficient and won't need to gather more."
Seeing Li Jue's excitement, it was a stark contrast to the panic she experienced during those early days of the apocalypse. This shift was partly due to her adapting to the current stable environment, complemented by the goodwill generated by the Celestial Tower.
Harvesting? It seems it's also time for me to reap the fruit of my labors.
Ye Zian patted her shoulder, encouraging her:
"You've done well, exceeding my expectations."
As a professional in agriculture, Li Jue was deserving of the leadership position Ye Zian had promoted her into; she handled all agricultural issues with precision.
"However, consider whether production can be increased to 200%. Self-sufficiency is just a small target. After that, the stronghold should stockpile reserves for future emergencies. Not every day will be as smooth as today. If you're short on people, I can allocate more manpower."
Although currently, vegetable production seemed nearly self-sustaining, this was based on the new 2,000 residents having a basic diet of one meat and one vegetable. As dietary preferences likely evolve to higher standards, there might be shortages.
Moreover, future apocalyptic events could severely impact food production, and as city master, Ye Zian had to plan for the worst.
After Ye Zian's analysis, Li Jue, resting her chin on her hand, began to contemplate deeply; she hadn't considered so far ahead, focused mainly on daily supply maintenance.
Respectfully, Li Jue responded:
"Lord City Master, I believe ten additional members will suffice. I am confident that within half a month, I can increase production."
Current low production was partly due to newcomers acclimating to their roles in the agricultural group. With ten more members, the sixty-strong unit, following a few days of training, could effectively handle their roles, where Li Jue had faith in doubling, if not more, the stronghold's fruit and vegetable production.
"Only ten?"
Ye Zian pondered for a moment and agreed:
"Okay, I'll take note of it. Once I consolidate data from other departments, I'll see if I can allocate additional manpower to you."
Having said that, Ye Zian left the field and headed to the administration building.
Unlike the large-scale expansion of the agricultural group, the administration group had only absorbed about ten people, now totaling around thirty—all former department elites. Their tasks involved communication across departments and managing the stronghold's construction, including planning future procurement tasks for the search team.
Li Menglan and Hu Xuefei sat in their leader's seats, diligently processing minor issues reported by other departments. Only matters beyond their authority were escalated to Zhao Wanrong.
"Greetings, Lord City Master."
Hearing greetings from other members, Li Menglan noticed Ye Zian entering and glanced at Zhao Wanrong's office. She explained hesitantly, "Senior, Sister Wanrong isn't in the office today."
Ye Zian walked over, ruffled Li Menglan's hair, and admonished with a chuckle:
"I know. I gave Sister Wanrong a few days off. Can't I work in the logistics department? Your thinking has become impure."
This comment brought a blush to Li Menglan's cheeks, too embarrassed to reply.
Ye Zian opened the office door and turned to Hu Xuefei, who appeared more composed:
"Today, I'll handle Sister Wanrong's logistics tasks. Bring me the work she has for today."
With Ye Zian's bold declaration, the tall Hu Xuefei handed him a stack of files with a smile.
"Huh? This much?"
There were over thirty files, crammed with dense writing.
"These are just today's paper reports; there are also electronic files on the computer."
"Ssh."
Ye Zian knew Zhao Wanrong was busy, but seeing her workload even during the apocalypse surprised him. The current tasks were already filtered by Hu Xuefei and Li Menglan, making him feel a twinge of sympathy for Sister Wanrong.
The first document was a plan discussed the previous day about setting up a convenience store: whether it should operate independently from the warehouse group, the daily supply quota, specific operating hours, and staff requirements.
Except for the combat division, which didn't adhere to fixed working hours, the stronghold's clerical staff generally operated from nine to five. However, a convenience store needed to open longer hours to accommodate members after their shifts.
Drawing from pre-apocalypse experiences, Ye Zian decided to entrust Ouyang Xue with forming a business group for future potential trade with other bases, leveraging her influential background and expertise in business management.
He established the store's operating hours from 8 am to 10 pm, manned by six members across two shifts, with room for more staff following the establishment of other recreational facilities.
Next on the agenda was a discussion on resident welfare, specifically regarding the possibility of offering leave days.
