Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Arrangement Of Black Braised Eggs! Natasha Romanoff Shot! It Was Wrong At The Beginning!
"Agent Romanoff, take a look at this information."
In his office, Nick Fury handed a stack of files to Natasha Romanoff as she stepped inside. He gestured for her to go through them carefully.
Natasha picked up the four documents and flipped through the first few pages. Two of the files had photos stamped with "DEAD" in bold letters, while the other two displayed images of two individuals in strange outfits.
Her eyes lingered on one of the photos in particular—the man in the black suit.
"Sir, don't tell me you want me to investigate Batman."
Natasha raised an eyebrow as she glanced up.
"I'm pretty sure that guy isn't Batman."
Nick Fury leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable.
Natasha knew the figure in the file wasn't Batman. After all, Batman was a fictional comic book character. There was no way he could exist in real life.
But as she scanned through the details, her brows furrowed.
"Inhumans?"
She looked up at Fury, clearly surprised.
As one of Fury's most trusted agents, Natasha was well aware of the existence of Inhumans. She also knew they usually stayed in hiding and rarely made public appearances.
But based on these reports, they clearly weren't staying hidden anymore.
"Two dead already?"
She turned her attention back to the reports.
"One is fast and has claws… The other has strong defense and unbreakable skin? His insides were destroyed, but his body was intact?"
Natasha read the findings carefully, her expression shifting from curiosity to disbelief.
Even with her vast experience—including fighting aliens—these reports were shocking.
Particularly the case of the Inhuman with indestructible skin.
"Is this guy's skin made of Vibranium?"
Her voice carried a mix of awe and suspicion.
The report mentioned that this Inhuman's skin had been retrieved and was currently under analysis at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s lab.
So far, tests showed that even the best equipment available couldn't leave a scratch on it.
If true, that was terrifying.
A man with steel-like skin and superhuman strength? It sounded like something out of a comic book.
Natasha shuddered at the thought.
"So the bag of precious metals is missing? But aren't these two Inhumans already dead?"
Natasha looked up again.
"Yes, but the people who killed them aren't."
Fury's voice was calm, but Natasha immediately understood what he meant.
Someone had taken the stolen items after dealing with the Inhumans.
She flipped to the next file, which contained details about Spider-Woman.
From the report, it seemed she was just a teenager who gained superpowers and decided to fight crime.
Her threat level was deemed low, and Fury even hinted that she could be a potential recruit for the Avengers.
Then Natasha moved on to the last file—the one that caught her attention earlier.
The man dressed like Batman.
"Teleportation?"
She skimmed through the details.
According to the report, this so-called Batman had killed both Inhumans.
He supposedly teleported them to extreme heights and let them fall to their deaths.
One body was shattered into pieces, while the other was intact but flattened with completely destroyed internal organs.
"How high did they fall from?"
Natasha's voice was laced with disbelief as she read the analysis.
What concerned her more was that S.H.I.E.L.D. had no information about this man.
"Is he an Inhuman too?"
Natasha looked up.
"If there are no surprises, yes," Fury replied, though his tone hinted at some doubt.
He explained that while the abilities pointed to an Inhuman, there were also rumors of organizations experimenting with enhancing humans.
However, most of those experiments failed, leaving the test subjects unstable and ultimately useless.
After finishing the reports, Natasha placed them back on the desk.
"You want me to investigate these two?"
Fury nodded.
"The Avengers need fresh blood. Thor is off in Asgard and won't always be available."
"Understood," Natasha replied.
"But what if the investigation doesn't work out?"
Fury paused before answering.
"Surveillance first. If necessary, containment. We can't leave loose ends out there."
His tone made it clear—any threats would be dealt with swiftly.
Natasha wasn't surprised.
That was S.H.I.E.L.D.'s standard approach.
"Got it. I'll handle it."
She turned to leave but stopped when Fury called out.
"One more thing."
She turned back.
"That Batman is dangerous. If you find him, take Barton with you."
Fury added that Barton had been training his reaction speed ever since the Loki incident, making him harder to surprise.
Given Batman's teleportation abilities, Fury wanted to be cautious.
"Understood. I'll bring him along."
Natasha left the office, leaving Fury staring out the window.
But Fury had made one mistake.
No amount of reaction training would prepare Barton for Lance's teleportation.
Lance didn't need physical contact to teleport his targets. He could take the ground beneath them too.
Fury's plan had already gone wrong from the start.
