Chapter 23: Joining the fight
"Come on, move in line, don't stop!!!" shouted one of the teachers.
"He's trying to locate you, or rather, us, but this crowd is preventing him from doing that," said Migi.
"What if he finds us?" Izumi wondered.
"Of course, he will attack us without hesitation, regardless of this crowd, but that's what we want too," replied Migi.
"What do you mean? That's what we want?" Izumi raised his right hand to chest level, clenching his fist to hide Migi from view, asking.
"Yes, while he's busy killing the people around you, I will move quickly and pierce his heart. Our chances of success will be 100%," Migi said.
"The people around me!!! Is that your plan, you... monster?" Izumi said, shocked by what he heard.
Migi interrupted him before he could finish, "Yes, that's my plan. You can think of them as a wall of flesh, a thick wall. It's essential to have a shield to protect you, and it will also be annoying for him…"
"A wall of flesh... I forgot what you are!" Izumi opened his fist and looked at it, trembling in disgust.
Due to Migi's talk about the wall of flesh, Izumi turned back against the flow of students towards the upper floor. Moving against the crowd made it extremely difficult, and Izumi struggled as his movements were slow. On his way, he encountered Murano but didn't pay her the attention he usually did. This prompted Murano to grab his hand, saying, "Did you forget something? I'm coming with you." Izumi quickly pulled his hand away and firmly refused her company, urging her to leave and find a safe place. Now alone on the top floor, Izumi waited for the man's appearance, believing he was saving hundreds of lives.
"What's wrong, Izumi? Didn't you like my plan?" Migi asked.
"Of course not," Izumi replied, breathing heavily from the physical exertion.
"How many people do you intend to kill?" Izumi added, raising his right hand to eye level.
"But it's for my own protection. You sacrifice other lives to continue your own; that's how animals live," Migi said.
"Nonsense," Izumi retorted.
"Humans are unique creatures that resort to suicide," Migi said, pointing his finger like an eye.
"That doesn't mean I want to die," Migi continued, then began pulling desks from the classroom to create walls on either side, as if marking the boundaries for the fight he was about to face against the man.
"What are you doing?" Izumi wondered.
"This wall is better than using humans," Migi replied, continuing to stack the desks.
In the hallway of the classrooms, Izumi sat on the floor to rest a bit after building a wall of desks on his right and another on his left.
"Tell me, Migi, are you upset by my calling you a…" Migi interrupted, saying, "Upset? I don't have time for that. I need to think about our next move, since the first plan didn't satisfy you…"
"What distinguishes us from that raging person, in your opinion?" Migi asked.
"What distinguishes us... is that he's a killer, and I'm a morally upright high school student. He can turn into a monster; I can't. He's one, and I'm two," Izumi said, his voice heavy with emotion.
"Is that so?" Migi leaned closer to Izumi, surprised by the notion of "I'm two."
"Do you think this person sees us as different beings?" Migi asked.
"What do you mean by that?" Izumi replied, confusion evident on his face.
Migi stretched and dashed quickly toward the opposite classroom. He transformed one of the fingers on his right hand into a thin and sharp bayonet, cutting off one of the desk's four legs and sharpening it to a point. Then he returned to his usual form, bringing Izumi the metal rod and handing it to him.
"Here, it's your weapon, Izumi," Migi said.
"My weapon?" Izumi replied.
"That's right. Eventually, my strength will match his, so there's only one solution: you need to join the fight. If you hesitate and hold me back, we'll die. On the other hand, if you fight effectively, we'll win," Migi said, leaning close to Izumi's face.
"Effectively? How?" Izumi asked, gripping the metal rod with his left hand, struggling to understand Migi's words.
"We'll take turns; that means I'll create an opening for the attack, and you need to exploit it," Migi explained.
"Will that work?" Izumi asked, uncertain.
"Most likely, yes. Get up and hide that weapon," Migi urged.
Izumi stood up from the ground, took the metal weapon, and tucked it behind his back.
"Yes, we're a team, just as he said earlier. Since he gave me the metal weapon, he's confident I can finish the job," Izumi thought aloud.
"Get ready! He's close, about three meters away from us," Migi said.
"Three meters!!! Where?" Izumi questioned, glancing to his right and then to his left.
"I can't see him!!!" He spun around in a full circle.
"He's right below us," Migi said, realizing the raging man was directly beneath them. He was correct; the man was looking up at the ceiling that separated him from Izumi.
The man created a hole in the ceiling after splitting his head and transforming it into machinery for that purpose. He climbed through it using the elongated appendages from his head, leaving Izumi in awe of the man's power. His face was divided into three sections: the right side extended upwards, featuring half an eye and an ear; the left was a perfect mirror of the right; the middle section had a fused eye without a pupil, a distorted nose, and a large mouth filled with jagged teeth resembling those of a Venus flytrap.
"Was that supposed to be a shield? (referring to the wall of desks) You've deprived yourself of an escape," the man said, now on the same floor as Izumi, surrounded by desks in front of and behind him.
"There's no place for you to run. I'll make sure your end is painful. You can't win without complete control over that body. Aside from your right hand, the rest of your body is useless to me. I can smell your fear and panic," he added, his head's appendages (which resembled octopus tentacles) stretching two meters upwards in continuous motion.
Izumi gritted his teeth, his lips trembling, unable to utter a word. He began to step back slowly, and for a moment, he imagined Migi's warning not to panic. He halted his retreat.
"You're trying to confuse me with your words!" Izumi thought aloud.
A flash sparked from the clash of metal weapons, sending a massive burst of flames flying. The raging man attacked with a heavy weapon—a battle axe with blades on both ends. Migi's reaction was somewhat slow, blocking the attack just 40 centimeters from Izumi's body, who instinctively closed his eyes in terror at the size of the weapon aimed at him.
Both stood about 10 meters apart, with the man's assault being fierce, leaving Migi with little choice but to defend against the varied strikes from the raging man. He tirelessly attempted to counter each attack, increasing the tempo of his assault.
Against Migi's foolish decision, the man's fighting style was exceptional. In a dramatic scene, the glass windows of the neighboring sections shattered, the sound of swords clashing echoed as if dozens of warriors were battling each other. Meanwhile, all the students evacuated from the classrooms gathered in the university courtyard, their heads fixed toward the sounds and flashes emanating through the glass wall.
