Chapter 78: intermediate trial

After a fraction of a second, Whittaker appeared on the next trial ground. He didn't feel dizzy or suffered any side effects that come with teleporting. Also, due to Devansha's vision, he saw what this trial ground looks like. There were two fields in this place. One field was a 100-meter long and 60-meter wide grassy ground. While the other was a 60-yards-long and 30-yards-wide field.

On the first field, there was only a single magical beast. Behind that enemy was the second field, clear of everything.

Whittaker has been staring at the enemy he was gonna face with eyes opened wide due to apprehension. At first, he was appalled when he saw the towering magical beast, but an instant later, a system notification popped up and crushed the remaining calm he had somehow managed to take hold of.

[Iron-clawed tailed beast, Spiked-Shell Earth rager.

Rank: 4-star

Attribute: Earth-type

Innate ability: Earth Spike, tail swipe, trembling land, intimidating gaze]

The beast has the head of an elephant and on its back was a massive shell from which a spike protruded out. Its hind hooves were black and shiny, reflecting a metallic sheen that slapped Whittaker's cheek. A scorpion-like reddish-gray tail extended from its back and reached a height of dozens of meters in the sky.

Its eyes seething with cruelty stared down at the snowy-haired boy, disdainfully. It was a fearsome sight for Whittaker, who was just an F-ranked mage. Just like the first trial, both sides were separated by a thin yet powerful Mana wall which was gonna disappear after dozens of seconds.

Currently, Spiked-shell Earth rager slammed its tail on the ground, which raised dust and caused massive cracks to form on the ground. Its eyes scarlet and seething with cruelty stared down at the snowy-haired boy, disdainfully.

From its gaze and actions, Whittaker inferred, 'It will use its tail to end my life, won't it? Is this a joke! How can an F-ranked mage fight a 4-star magical beast all on his own? This will be my end! Let's leave!' Whittaker thought while turning around, but there was no door or return portal behind his back. He was met with disappointment through and through.

'The only way out is to die or fight till I die. Either way, I am gonna die. But it's still better to fight!'

While thinking that with a mournful face, he turns around to face the magical beast, almost immediately, he puts on a fighting stance. He was ready to duke it out with the beast that is 30 times bigger than his size. On the other hand, the magical beast was waiting for the wall separating them to vanish so that it can smash Whittaker into a meat paste!

"I won't give up without a fight!" He exclaimed to boost his downcast morale.

"Well said, young friend. This is the intermediate level of the Hard difficulty inheritance trial. There's just one enemy, easy, isn't it? Your task is to kill it, cross the next field and you will obtain a D-rank treasure chest. The automatic prompts will explain the rest to you." Elder Zachary's voice rang beside his ears.

In reply, Whittaker internally thought, 'Easy, my ass! If I become stronger then I am gonna put Elder Zachary in a cage with three S-ranked magical beasts!'

Whittaker's revenge will come after a long period, but revenge is a dish best served cold, after all. He was certain that this wasn't a trial, rather a path that leads to certain death.

Right after Elder Zachary's words, a wide holographic notification appeared in the middle of the grassy field.

[Conditions to pass the trial: Kill the 4-star magical beast Spiker-shell earth rager!

Rewards:

A: Opening to the advanced stage of Zachary trials, treasures-heaven.

B: Return Portal

C: D-ranked treasure chest]

[The Mana Wall will disappear in 35 seconds]

Nina and Elder Zachary didn't give him any hints on how to defeat the monstrosity. The rules of the inheritance trial which Elder Zachry has set up does not allow anyone to sneak a helping hand to the challenger.

Whittaker's heart rate accelerated with each second. Only 25 seconds were left before the mana wall vanishes. 'I have decided to fight, but how will I defeat such a massive and powerful magical beast.'

His sulking emotions were visible for the viewers to see.

Elder Zachary muttered in disappointment while gazing away from the screen, "If he fails then so be it. It would mean that he just wasn't fated to obtain my inheritance."

Some seconds later, Nina says: ‹He won't. Can't you see the beaming smile on his face?›

"Huh?" His gaze returns to the holographic screen and he saw the boy, who was just sulking, smiling. "So weird!"

As for the person in question, he was smiling because Night's Will system has decided to intervene in this unfair fight. It was gonna help the Guardian!

[Guardian, this trial isn't as hard as it seems. It's as Zachary said, you will pass this trial as long as you make active and effective responses]

'Really?' Whittaker couldn't believe the system.

[Yes!]

'Easy for you to say! How will I slay a 4-star magical beast when I am just an F-ranked mage. Can you tell me how can an F-ranked mage kill a 4-star beast that requires an entire party of D-ranked awakened to handle?'

In the awakened continent, one party = 5 members.

[Guardian, I will be guiding you throughout the battle. As for now, listen carefully, the spike-shell Earth rager physical attacks are restricted by range, so you will be fine as long as you are far away from it. Its innate ability Earth tremble only affects the ground, so you will be fine as long as you are not touching the ground. Also, its tail can only extend up to a maximum of 30 meters in the air. Plus, it only has one ranged attack that you have to look out for. I believe Guardian will be able to actively respond to its attack as battling is in your blood. You are a Devansha, after all!] The system replied mysteriously. Its voice monotone.

A flicker of thought passes through the crystal icy eyes of the snowy-haired boy.
