Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Whose Warrior Is This?
The current situation was clear—Zhongli's home was under siege!
Seeing the state of things, Yu summoned his Wolf's Gravestone, dashed outside the city, and started swinging wildly at the enemy, as though swatting flies. He loved the weight of the greatsword—it wasn't too heavy or too light, perfectly suited for his style.
But as he fought, he realized something was off. Why here? This was just the main city, hardly a critical target. The Archon War wasn't about cities—it was about gods. Wait a minute—Guizhong!
---
"Stay strong, stay strong!"
"Hold on, Lady Guizhong!" Little Ganyu crouched by Guizhong's side, cheering her on as best as she could.
After what seemed like an eternity of pain, the child of dust and stone was finally born.
Unlike ordinary human infants, this child of gods didn't cry at birth. Instead, she opened her eyes wide, curiously taking in the world around her.
Ganyu carefully picked up the child, wrapped her snugly in a soft blanket, and carried her to Guizhong.
"Let me see her," Guizhong said, weak but eager.
"Here she is."
But just as Guizhong reached out, something unexpected happened—the roof was suddenly ripped apart, and a god burst into the room, lunging straight at her.
Reacting swiftly, little Ganyu lowered her head and charged forward with all her might. The impact was tremendous.
The god was sent flying, but not without consequence—sharp spikes on his body left a bleeding gash on Ganyu's forehead.
"Ganyu, are you okay?" Guizhong asked anxiously.
"Gegege…" the god sneered maliciously. "I heard Morax and the Goddess of Dust are trying to create a new god. One Morax is already too much—we can't allow another. So, die!"
"Die!" echoed more voices as a group of gods surged forward.
At that moment, a loud boom resounded as Yu descended like a meteor, landing directly on the god with a crushing force. He followed up by wildly swinging his Wolf's Gravestone.
"Stop, stop! If you keep hitting me, I'm going to die!"
"Do I look like I care whether you live or die?" Yu retorted.
"What are you standing around for? Get him!" the god yelled to his comrades.
Suddenly, more gods squeezed into the small house, far exceeding what the structure could handle. The walls groaned under the weight of so many combatants.
Guizhong grabbed Yu's sleeve urgently. "We need to leave. Their target is me and the baby. Fighting here will endanger the people."
Yu thought for a moment and realized she was right. He scooped up little Ganyu, secured Guizhong and the baby, and made for the city outskirts. Wherever Zhongli is, that's where safety lies, he thought.
With Vortex Vanquisher in one hand and Wolf's Gravestone in the other, Yu led the way. Since Guizhong felt uncertain about her own strength, she had fashioned a makeshift pouch for the unnamed baby, which was tied securely to Yu's chest. Meanwhile, because Ganyu's hands were too busy, Yu ended up riding her like a mount, and Guizhong followed suit.
"Ganyu, can you manage this?" Yu asked.
"No problem! I'm strong!" Ganyu replied confidently.
"Good. Let's move!"
The enemy surged towards them like a relentless tide. Yu swung his weapons with precision, cutting down foes with each strike, but the more he fought, the more enemies seemed to appear. It felt like a scene straight out of a legend—one warrior against an army.
Suddenly, Ganyu's voice rang out in alarm. "Brother Yu! Lady Guizhong fell off!"
"Turn around! We're going back!"
---
"Not here! Keep moving!" Yu barked as he charged back, cutting through the enemy ranks like a war chariot. He refrained from using his elemental powers—summoning a wooden giant might obliterate the enemy, but it could just as easily harm Guizhong or the baby.
After several harrowing attempts, Yu finally rescued Guizhong and placed her back on Ganyu's back.
---
From a distance, the leader of the coalition of eighteen gods observed the battle with narrowed eyes. "I always thought Morax was the most invincible being in the world. Who is this warrior, fiercer than even him?"
No one answered, until one bold voice piped up, "Leader, I think he's coming straight for us, and… he's carrying a woman's head."
The speaker promptly turned into a stone statue.
"Close your eyes!" someone shouted, recognizing the danger. The gods quickly obeyed, but it was already too late—Yu took the opportunity to skewer their leader with Vortex Vanquisher, piercing him like a kebab.
"Keep running, Ganyu!" Yu yelled.
But then, something completely unexpected happened—the leader's "corpse" exploded, sending both Yu and his mount flying. Yu shielded the baby with his body, taking the brunt of the impact as he hit the ground face-first.
"Curse you! You destroyed my finest body!" the leader's voice rang out again. Many of the remaining gods shuddered. His power allowed him to parasitically inhabit anything he touched, making him virtually impossible to kill.
Yu checked the baby—still alive. Then he looked for Guizhong—she was stuck in the ground, but probably fine. As for Ganyu, she was nowhere in sight.
"Madam, in this situation, you're holding me back. I'll throw you somewhere safe. Okay?"
"Do what you must. Staying will just be a hindrance," Guizhong agreed reluctantly. "What are you planning?"
"Throwing you." Without hesitation, Yu launched Guizhong towards Bishui Plain, where there was a lake. She's a god—she won't die. Probably.
Now, to find Ganyu. Yu cleaved a nearby godling in half. "GANYU!" he bellowed, his voice so powerful that an ordinary person would have collapsed from sheer shock.
"Brother Yu, I'm over here!" a muffled voice called out. Yu turned and saw a giant beast holding Ganyu by the neck. Without hesitation, he stomped down hard, forcing the beast to spit her out.
"Brother Yu! That was disgusting! So gross!" Ganyu wailed, tears streaming down her face.
Yu looked around at the chaotic scene, suddenly questioning whether riding Ganyu was such a good idea after all.
"Ganyu, hide behind me. I'm using my elemental burst."
"Brother Yu, finish them!"
With a deafening roar, a colossal green-tinged wooden giant erupted from the ground, a thousand arms sprouting from its back. All at once, the arms came crashing down, causing a massive explosion that obliterated most of the enemy forces. Only a few with exceptional defensive abilities survived.
"You think this is over? You're too naïve! I admit I underestimated you, but don't underestimate me!" the leader shouted defiantly, still alive despite everything.
"Show me what you've got," Yu taunted.
The leader grinned wickedly and pulled out a Gorgon's head, its snake-like hair writhing ominously.
Yu's heart sank. Crap! A petrification weapon!
Before he could react, the leader activated it. Yu felt his body grow cold as his blood seemed to freeze. His limbs stiffened, and a wave of exhaustion washed over him, dragging him towards unconsciousness.
"Brother Yu, don't die!" Ganyu cried out in terror.
Just as Yu's consciousness was about to fade completely, a gentle female voice echoed in his mind, soothing like a warm spring.
"A defiant soul cannot be imprisoned by stone. Awake, and witness the twilight of the gods!"
Yu's eyes snapped open.
BOOM! The stone encasing his body shattered.
"That was way too close! I nearly died!"
---
Above, in Celestia, a woman watched the unfolding events with an amused smile. "A crooked branch of the world tree?" She waved her hand lazily.
Back on the battlefield, Yu prepared to finish off the leader when suddenly a disturbance from the sky caught his attention.
A meteor was hurtling straight towards him.
---
Yu sighed. I… should survive this. Probably.
