Chapter 52: Unexpected Friendships (Part 1)
After Dad and I mended things between us, and I promised to stop hiding away and being hard on myself, he made his way back to Berk. I saw him off before I made my way to the clubhouse to finally eat something like he ordered as he mounted Skullcrusher's back.
Kala was the only one in the room when I entered and I smiled when I saw she pulled out some fish for both of us, but I raised a brow when I noticed my pile was bigger than hers.
'Does she know I haven't eaten anything lately?' I thought, but knowing my mate of course she would know if I had eaten or not.
"How'd you know I'd come in here?" I asked as I made my way over to the table and sat next to her.
"Just a hunch." She giggled. "I had a feeling that talking with Stoick was exactly what you needed to get out of that funk, so I left him to it and decided to do things around the Edge while you conversed. Figured you'd be hungry when you emerged from the hut sooo."
I smiled and kissed her cheek. "Well you were right. Can't remember the last time I actually ate something to be honest." I admitted as I ripped into the fish in front of me.
"Five days ago you had a bit of Icelandic Cod, but you didn't finish the whole thing." Kala mentioned as-a-matter-of-factly and I chuckled.
"You kept track?"
"Well yeah. I was worried about you. You would do the same thing if it were me that wasn't eating and you know it." She chided jokingly and I laughed with a nod of my head.
"Yeah you have a point, milady."
She smiled and kissed my cheek. "That I do. From your mood walking in I assume the talk went well?"
I nodded as I swallowed the fish I had just torn off the bone. "Yeah it did. And you're right. Talking with my dad was what I needed. I just didn't want to admit it to myself I guess." I looked down at the table as I set down the fish in my hands, paying little mind to the scales and blood that was left behind. "It made me realize that I wasn't doing my part in fixing our relationship as father and son. So that's what I'm gonna do now." I stated as I looked at her with determination glimmering in my eyes.
Kala smiled and nodded. "I'm glad to hear that you two are finally working towards fixing things my love. I know how difficult it's been for both of you these last few years. The tension was so thick between you two that it could be cut with an axe." She said as she rubbed away some of the blood and scales on my face.
I blushed a bit as she did so and nodded. "Yeah it was pretty bad wasn't it? Guess I was just so lost in my anger about being disowned that I didn't realize just how bad the tension was. Or just how much Dad was showing he was working towards being a better father." I sighed and looked down again.
Kala lifted my head to lock eyes with her, a soft smile on her lips. "Don't blame yourself for that. It's not your fault that you did not see the signs. But now you do and you are willing to contribute to fixing things between the two of you now. What happened, happened and there is nothing we can do to change that. But what we can do is move forward and work towards fixing things that were broken from the past to ensure a better future."
I smiled and kissed her gently. "You never cease to amaze me, ya know that?"
Kala purred and rested our foreheads together. "I do indeed."
I purred softly and enjoyed the moment, but I pulled away from her after a couple of minutes to finish the fish Kala pulled out for me. She giggled as I ripped apart the cod that was in front of me.
"Well now you know not to starve yourself, huh?" She asked and I rolled my eyes playfully.
"Yeah, yeah. No more starving myself. I learned my lesson." I joked and that earned more giggles from my mate in response.
We sat in silence for a little while as the both of us tore into the fish Kala gathered for us, but that silence was broken when Snotlout made his way into the clubhouse and gagged.
"Man, seeing you eat raw fish is so unsettling.." He said while covering his mouth.
I rolled my eyes and wiped my mouth with my arm. "How is this any different than seeing me eat it cooked? Not to mention you've seen Kala eat it raw for years." I retorted.
"Yeah, well Kala was born a dragon. You turned into one once you mated her. There's a difference." Snotlout shot back.
I smirked and bit into a fish while looking right at my cousin just wanting to mess with him and he gagged and looked away.
"Gross dude! I get you're a Night Fury now, but jeez!"
I laughed and set the fish down. I could hear Kala stifling laughter as well.
"Calm down Snotlout. I was just messing around. But seriously, you'll have to get used to it at some point. Because this isn't changing anytime soon." I said leaning against the table with my head propped up with one hand, a smile on my lips.
Snotlout glared at me and hit my arm. I chuckled and rubbed where he hit me.
"Yeah, yeah. I deserve that."
"Damn right you do. I get you've been down in the dumps lately, but please try to refrain from grossing me out any chance you get, yeah?" Snotlout asked with crossed arms.
I laughed a bit and nodded. "Alright, alright. Point made cuz. I'll keep from grossing you out from now on."
"Good." He said with a huff, then he started a fire to cook his own food.
"What are the others up to anyway?" I asked as I helped him get the fire roaring to life.
"Eh, Fishlegs is meditating with Meatlug in his rock garden and the twins are goofing off in their boar pit again." He said as he set up a lean against for a stick to roast some meat over the flames.
"Sounds about right." Kala said as she tossed one of her fish towards Snotlout, who caught it and muttered a thanks as he put it over the fire.
Not a second later the twins came barreling into the clubhouse looking distraught. I got up and made my way over to them, Kala and Snotlout right behind me.
"What's got you two so riled up?" I asked, my arms crossing as I raised a brow.
"S-so you know how Stormfly was flying about around the islands close to the Edge this past week?" Tuffnut asked.
"Yeah, what about it?" Kala asked, getting a bit worried for her Nadder sister.
"Well she just got back, but not empty clawed!" Ruffnut whined out.
"What do you mean she didn't come back empty clawed? What'd she bring back?" I questioned, very confused about why the twins were freaking out.
"She brought back a person!" They shouted in unison.
We all froze with wide eyes. "She what?" The three of us asked out of pure shock and also a bit of worry.
'Why would Stormfly of all dragons bring a random person to the Edge?' I thought, not even sure if this could be happening or not.
We all rushed out of the clubhouse and followed the twins to the stables. Stormfly was on the landing strip right outside the stables with a Viking girl that looked as though she had just awoken from being knocked out. I pulled Kala behind me, a growl forming in the back of my throat as I got my sword out just in case the girl was planning on attacking us.
The girl in question jumped and hid behind Stormfly's leg a bit when she saw the blade burst into flames.
"Who are you?" I asked sternly, not wanting another Astrid situation to claw its way out of the grave it was buried in not too long ago.
"Nanna." The girl squeaked out. "Nanna Lykke. From the looks of it, this Nadder saved me from the dangers of the island it found me on, but it seems that I'm not quite out of danger just yet.."
I looked at Stormfly, a wary question in my eyes.
"She doesn't seem to be dangerous, Hiccup. She thanked me the second she awoke." Stormfly explained and I sighed.
I looked back towards Nanna and got a better look at her. Her red wavy hair was a mess of knots, sticks and leaves. Her clothes were covered in dirt and grass stains, a couple of places torn from either sharp rocks or the snag of a branch. There was even a cut on her right cheek that had some blood seeping out of it still.
"What island were you on before you passed out?" I asked, lowering my sword a little, still very wary of her.
"Um..It was basically all forest and there were a few boars and some very territorial dragons. Not sure the exact ones since I was running for my life before I tripped and hit my head hard on the ground. Next thing I know I'm here on your island thanks to this Nadder here." She explained as she rubbed Stormfly's snout.
Stormfly purred and leaned into her hand and that made all of us relax. I extinguished my blade and hid it back in the hilt, putting the sword back on my leg. Kala came out from behind me and grasped my hand gently, intertwining our fingers as she did so.
"Well you're safe now. That's what matters. My name is Kala, and this protective one here is Hiccup Haddock. We're the leaders of the Dragon Riders." Kala said sweetly, which made me smile at her.
"Dragon Riders? Oh now I know why that sounds so familiar. You're pretty well known. I've heard quite a few stories during my travels." Nanna said with some excitement in her words.
"You've heard of us?" I asked, quite shocked about that.
People were actually talking about us? I never knew what we did became so well known.
"Who hasn't cuz? We're, like, the best there is." Snotlout bragged with a smirk adorning his features, posing heroically to try and impress Nanna.
She sweat dropped and looked away from Snotlout, not really that impressed by him in the slightest. "Is he always like this?" She asked, genuinely curious if this is what Snotlout was like on the daily.
I sighed and nodded. "Unfortunately."
"Hey!"
"That's the norm for Snotlout Jorgenson." Kala added and Snotlout huffed with his arms crossed.
"Well excuse me for wanting to brag about our accomplishments." He pouted, looking away as he acted butt hurt.
"Anything cool you've heard about Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston?" Ruffnut asked excitedly.
Nanna looked at the twins and raised a brow. "Besides the fact that they love causing chaos, not much. I'm guessing you two are them?" She asked.
"Why yes we are. Very astute observation Ms. Lykke." Tuffnut said, acting all posh as he did so.
I shook my head and sighed at their antics. Leave it up to Snotlout and the twins to goof off in these kinds of situations.
Nanna looked between all of us then raised a brow of confusion. "Aren't there two more members on your team? Fishlegs Ingerman and Astrid Hofferson, right?"
We all stiffened up when she mentioned Astrid and growls came from Kala and I as well as all the other dragons. Nanna jumped a bit from the growls.
"D-did I say something wrong?" She asked as she backed away from Stormfly, worried the Nadder would attack her.
"We'd rather not get into that right now." Snotlout said, just a tiny bit harsh as he did so.
"Let's just say she did some stuff that wasn't okay and now she's gone." Kala added, our grip on each other's hands tightening the more we talked about the psycho.
"I-I see. I won't pry about it then. It is not my business to know anyways. I am sorry for bringing her up." Nanna apologized.
"It's..fine. You didn't know. We won't hold that against you." I stated, trying my best to not let my anger towards Astrid control my decisions.
Nanna nodded and smiled a bit. "Thank you."
"To answer your question by the by, Fishlegs is doing his own thing right now with his Gronckle Meatlug. You'll be able to meet him later if you wanna stick around that is." Snotlout said, trying his best to be nice to Nanna and maybe even flirt with her.
She gave him an uncomfortable smile and nodded. "Right.."
"Ignore him. If you would like to stay on Dragon's Edge while you recuperate from that dragon attack you just went through you may. There's a vacant hut you can use while you're here if you want." I decided and Kala gave me a soft smile of approval.
Nanna smiled and nodded in thanks. "Thank you Hiccup. I'll take you up on that offer. I'm not exactly sure where that island is now and all of my belongings are there."
"We can go searching for it in the morning if you would like?" Kala suggested and Nanna's eyes glimmered with hope.
"Really? Oh thank you so much. I don't know what I would do if I never found my journal and axes again. They were a coming of age present from my parents and they mean everything to me." Nanna explained, looking down with a soft smile on her lips. "I really should go visit them soon."
"What is with people and journals lately?" Snotlout questioned with crossed arms. "Like seriously, what is so special about journals?"
"I keep it as a way to write down my thoughts as I explore. Helps me remember people I have met and places I have been to." Nanna said cheerily.
"Cool." Tuffnut said in his own goofball way.
"Anyways." Kala said to get everyone's attention, "The hut you can use is the one with the makeshift Nadder head atop it. There should still be a bed and other furniture items in there. If not, just come get one of us and we can get that fixed."
Nanna nodded and smiled sweetly. "Thank you again for letting me stay here. I very much appreciate it."
"Of course. Welcome to Dragon's Edge." Kala said happily.
