How to Love a Night Fury how to train your dragon

Chapter 53: Unexpected Friendships (Part 2)

The next morning Hiccup and I had Nanna agree to meet us at the stables to head out to find the island she lost her stuff at. She showed up just before I was going to transform and it made me stiffen up a bit.

"So which dragons will we be taking?" Nanna asked cheerily.

"Uh, actually Nanna. You and Hiccup will be riding on my back." I said sheepishly as I rubbed my left arm.

She tilted her head with a brow raised in confusion. "Did you hit your head or something Kala? Last I checked you were a human."

I looked at Hiccup nervously and he nodded with an encouraging smile, then I looked back at Nanna, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves.

"That's where you're wrong. I'm actually a Night Fury." I said, then transformed and lowered my head as I waited for Nanna's reaction.

The girl in question was frozen in place with wide eyes, mouth agape from utter shock. I whined as my earplates went flush against my head, worry filling my thoughts. Was she going to run? Attack me? The possibilities were endless.

I was broken out of my thoughts when I felt Hiccup scratch my head and Nanna finally started to say something.

"O-okay..was not expecting that. But now it actually makes a lot of sense. None of the stories I have heard mentioned Kala even having a dragon and this explains everything. Wow."

Hiccup chuckled as I leaned into his hand from the scratches. "Yeah that would be why. She's both my girlfriend and dragon. I can't fly without her and she can't fly without me." I nuzzled him purring happily and he laughed as he nuzzled me back, surprisingly holding in his own purrs.

"That's really sweet. C-can I?" Nanna asked as she reached out to touch me.

Hiccup nodded and backed away as I moved my head towards Nanna's outreached hand, my snout resting on her palm. She giggled as the air from my nostrils brushed against her hand.

"Her scales are so smooth.." Nanna said in awe as she ran her hand over my scales, which made me purr with pride, my tail swaying back and forth.

Hiccup smiled and went to work on securing my saddle and tailfin to my body. "Just one of the very many special traits of her species."

"Is she the only one left?"

I looked at Hiccup and saw that he was contemplating on what to say. I crooned to get his attention and he sighed as he finished up tightening the last strap on the saddle.

"Not necessarily."

Nanna looked at Hiccup confused, her hands dropping from my head as she abandoned the pets. "What do you mean?"

"Well..I'm actually a Night Fury too." Hiccup confessed as he let his wings and tail come out of hiding.

Nanna's eyes widened significantly as she looked at Hiccup's wings. "H-how is that possible?"

"It's a long story. Let's just say that it's a failsafe for our species to not die out." Hiccup stated sheepishly as he hid his wings and tail once more.

"How long have you been..?"

"Almost three weeks now. But I prefer flying on Kala's back since it's still relatively new to me." Hiccup explained as he mounted my back and clicked his prosthetic into place as he secured himself.

"I see." Nanna said as she accepted Hiccup's hand when it was offered and mounted my back with his help.

I felt her get secured, then Hiccup changed the position of my tailfin and we were airborne seconds later.

It took us around four hours to find the island Nanna was on last and find her belongings, but we were able to keep from running into any aggressive dragons which was a bonus. When we got back to the Edge, Kala and I dropped her off at Astrid's old hut.

"Go ahead and put your things up. Feel free to explore the island if you want too. We'll be in the clubhouse talking with the others if you need anything." I said as Nanna dismounted Kala's back.

"Alright. Thank you again for taking me to get my things." She said as she grabbed her basket then set it to the side.

"Anytime." I replied with a polite smile, then I adjusted Kala's tailfin and we made our way to the clubhouse.

Once Nanna's things were safely stored in the vacant hut that she was allowed to use, she decided to go explore the island. She made her way across the platforms as she looked for a good spot to start from.

As she was walking about she stopped when she caught some of the conversation the Dragon Riders were having in the clubhouse.

"I just don't get how you think we'll be able to find it man. The journal literally told us that the thing moves to protect its inhabitants." She heard Snotlout state.

"Surprisingly I'm with Snotlout on this one. There is no way of telling where the island is or even the places it is moving from. How would we be able to track it?" Fishlegs added on.

'A moving island? Wait a minute. Didn't I come across an island that was shrouded in mist that slowly moved a couple weeks ago? Maybe that's the island they're looking for.' Nanna thought then she set her mind on helping out the riders as a way of thanking them.

Nanna hesitantly entered the clubhouse while fidgeting with her hands. "Um..I'm sorry for eavesdropping on your team meeting-,"

Snotlout cut her off as he glared at her. "What in Odin's name are you still doing here?"

"I heard you guys mention a moving island and-,"

"Oh wonderful! Now you know our very secret information!" Snotlout turns to look at Hiccup tossing his hands out in Nanna's direction. Hiccup sighs, rubs two fingers into his eyes and waves the other boy down.

"Let her speak for Thor's sake. We're stuck, and if she can help us we need to listen to her."

The others all nodded in agreement with their leader and Snotlout groaned in defeat, mumbling something inaudible to himself in agitation.

"Thank you Hiccup." Nanna thanked, "As I was saying, I heard you guys mention a moving island and I may know how you can find it. I came across this odd looking island that had this hazy mist surrounding it a couple weeks back. It wasn't moving that fast though. I was able to record information on it for about a week before it was too far away from my location."

"Wait. You've seen the island?" Fishlegs asked and Nanna nodded.

"Yes. I could take you guys to where I last encountered it and we could track it from there. I believe it was heading closer to your island from an angle." She explained.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. So you're telling us that it's been super close to us this entire time?!" Snotlout shouted irritably.

Kala growled and smacked the back of his head. "Would you stop being overdramatic for two seconds please?" She asked through gritted teeth.

Snotlout pouted a bit as he rubbed the back of his head. "Okay, okay. I'll stop."

The twins snickered at Snotlout's bad luck, but shut up when he glared at them.

"If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for this island?" Nanna questioned curiously.

Hiccup and Kala locked eyes before they looked back at her.

"It's the island that Night Furies originated from. It's called Night Fury Isles." Hiccup stated and the others nodded.

"Hiccup and I wanted to try to find it so we could find out if we truly are the only ones left." Kala added.

"Oh, so she knows Hiccup's a Night Fury too?! We just met the girl and you're already spilling everything to her?!" Snotlout asked, very irritated now.

"Yes, she knows I'm a dragon Snotlout. Why are you so concerned about her knowing this stuff anyway?" Hiccup asked with crossed arms.

"Because we barely know her! How do we know we can even trust her?! What if she turns out to be just like you-know-who?! We can't risk it man!" Snotlout retorted.

"Says the guy that was flirting with said girl just yesterday." Tuffnut said cheekily.

Snotlout blushed in embarrassment and glared at the male Thorston. "That's not the point! The point is we don't know if we can trust her!"

Nanna sighed and pulled her journal out of her satchel. She opened it to the pages she filled with information on Night Fury Isles and set it on the table for the riders to see.

"Here. It's everything I recorded about the island. I can tell when I'm not wanted. If you guys need me, I'll be exploring." She said sadly, then left the clubhouse silently.

Everyone glared at Snotlout once Nanna was gone.

"What? I'm right, aren't I?" He asked with his arms crossed.

"Yes, but just because we don't know if she's a threat or not doesn't mean we need to be rude, Snotlout. She was just trying to help." Kala stated with her hands on her hips.

"Kala's right. She's a guest, not a prisoner. We need to show her we aren't a threat to her and in turn we'll see if she is a threat to us." Hiccup added with his arms crossed.

"But that's so boring !" Ruffnut whined out. "We wanna see some action!"

Kala gave Ruffnut a deadpan expression. "We are not going to fight Nanna."

"Aww c'mon please? This whole day has been super boring." Tuffnut pleaded.

"No." Both Hiccup and Kala said with finality, which got the twins to quiet down with pouts.

"Look, we won't be able to track down the island with just what's written in Nanna's journal. We're gonna need her to point us in the right direction, and we can't do that if she thinks we don't trust her." Kala explained and Snotlout groaned in annoyance.

"Don't tell me I have to apologize to her?"

"She didn't say you had to. But it would be best if you were the one that talked to her." Hiccup reasoned which earned yet another groan from the Jorgenson.

"Alright, fine. I'll go talk to her." He said, then he reluctantly left the clubhouse to find the Viking girl in question.

He found her watching some Terrible Terrors play in a clearing near the outpost. She was sitting in the shade of a large tree, wiping at her eyes to get rid of some tears. Snotlout sighed and made his way over to her.

"Hey."

Nanna jumped from surprise then looked away when she noticed who it was. "What do you want?"

"Okay look. I can see what I said back there hurt you, but I have the right to be cautious. My cousin just got over hating himself for attacking someone who caused a lot of bad things to happen for all of us a couple weeks back. Our entire village is terrified of him right now because of it. So, yeah, it's gonna take a lot to get me to trust you. Got it? I don't want anyone I care about to get hurt again."

She nodded in understanding, but kept from looking at Snotlout. He sighed again and sat next to her.

"What I'm trying to say is we could use your help with finding the island. If what you said is true, then you're the only one that can point us in the right direction. Finding this island means a lot to Hiccup and Kala and we'd really appreciate it if you would help us." He said, a bit stiff if anything.

Nanna stifled a laugh as she finally looked at him. "You're not one for asking for help are you Jorgenson?"

Snotlout scoffed. "Wha? No! Of course not! I'm Snotlout Jorgenson! I don't need help with anything!"

"Uh huh. Sure ya don't." She joked and Snotlout groaned.

"Just come back to the clubhouse and help us out, alright?" He said, then got up and made his way back.

Nanna shook her head with a smile and followed the hard headed Viking back to the clubhouse. Kala smiled at her as she entered and she gave a small smile back.

"So, when would you like to leave?"
