How to Love a Night Fury how to train your dragon

Chapter 54: Love Once Lost

The following morning we set out to find Night Fury Isles. Kala and I were leading the way to the island we took Nanna back to as a good retracing point for her.

After a few minutes of flying I looked over at Nanna and Stormfly. Nanna was rigid, clinging tightly to the saddle and keeping her gaze fixed behind Stormfly's spikes. I tapped Kala's head and signaled to the nervous girl once I had her attention and she crooned in concern when she took notice.

I steered Kala closer to Stormfly and smiled softly at Nanna. "Nervous?" I asked to break the silence.

"Very…" She squeaked out. "T-this is the first time I've ridden a dragon by myself…being on Kala's back was easy since you were in control…but controlling a dragon myself is a completely different story…"

I chuckled and nodded with a smile. "Yeah, that's pretty normal. There's no need to be scared, though. Stormfly is a good dragon. She won't let anything happen to you. If you want, I could help you get more comfortable with controlling her?" I offered.

Nanna nodded. "Yes please…"

I steered Kala a bit closer so I could reach Nanna better. "Alright, so you see how your knuckles are white from the grip you have on the saddle?" Nanna nodded as she took notice of it. "You need to loosen that grip. You just need to be holding onto it, not clamping on like you will fall off if you let go."

Nanna slowly loosened her grip, but as she did the rest of her body got more rigid and Stormfly squawked in surprise.

"Okay, did you see how Stormfly reacted to the change in pressure when your body stiffened up more?" I asked and Nanna nodded again.

"Mhm…"

"That was her way of telling you to loosen your body up because it's hurting her a bit. If you're not comfortable, she's not comfortable." I explained.

Nanna looked at the back of Stormfly's head with a sad frown. "I didn't know I was hurting her…"

I smiled sympathetically. "That's alright. Nothing we can't fix. Now, I need you to relax your body. The more relaxed your body is, the easier it is for the dragon to be calm as you are controlling them. You have to show them that you trust them to not let you fall."

"B-but what if-,"

"Stormfly won't let you fall, I promise." I interrupted calmly. "She's got over three years of experience with having a rider. Not to mention the rest of us will catch you if you do end up falling. We won't let anything bad happen to you."

Nanna nodded and took a deep breath to calm her nerves. As she did, her body relaxed to the point where she was just resting atop Stormfly's back. I noticed that Stormfly's flying became less stiff as the pressure on her lessened.

"There you go. You see how Stormfly is flying smoother now?"

Nanna's eyes widened as she took notice of the difference then she looked towards me. "It's so much better now."

I smiled with a nod. "That's because you're finally comfortable, which in turn made Stormfly comfortable. Okay, last thing is steering. If you need Stormfly to change course just give her a light nudge to indicate which way you want her to go. So nudging her left side would tell her to go right and nudging her right side would tell her to go left, or you could push your saddle in the direction you are wanting to go if you're not comfortable with nudging her."

Nanna nodded in understanding. "Okay. I-is there anything else?"

I shook my head, the smile still upon my lips. "Nope. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Way easier than me flying Kala honestly."

Nanna's face filled with confusion at that statement. "What do you mean it's easier than flying Kala?"

"Well-," I tried, but I was interrupted by Snotlout.

"Uh, hello?! You done talking over there?! Kinda need to find a moving island, remember?!" He exclaimed with annoyance seeping out with his words.

I sighed and tried to keep from getting upset as I steered Kala away from Stormfly. "Calm down Snotlout. We're still on course to that island, then we'll go from there once Nanna remembers which direction she came from."

"Well we'd be there by now if you didn't have to give a crash course on flying!" Snotlout retorted and I growled in annoyance.

"Look, none of us knew this would be her first time flying a dragon by herself, alright? That was on me for not asking her before we left." I explained as calmly as I could.

As Snotlout was about to argue with my statement again, Kala roared at him to get him to stop. She was glaring at him as he clamped his mouth shut and she huffed out steam.

~~~HTLANF~~~
The sun was setting once we finally found Night Fury Isles. I crooned in awe at the beautiful colors that danced in the mist surrounding the island and the others made their own sounds of awe as we hovered close to the barrier.
"How come the journal didn't say anything about how pretty the mist was?" Ruffnut asked.
"Yeah, that seems like something that would've been nice to mention." Tuffnut complained.
"Maybe because the writer didn't think it was that important to put down?" Fishlegs said as he looked at the twins.
I looked at Hiccup and saw curiosity glimmering in his eyes, but also some concern. I crooned to get his attention, which got him to say what was on his mind.
"Either way, it's concerning how thin the mist is." He looked towards Nanna, "Was it this thin the last time you saw it?"
Nanna shook her head sadly. "No. It was rather thick when I came across it the first time. I could barely see into the island then. But now? It's practically see-through."
"Not really moving much either." Snotlout pointed out, and he was right. The island's movement is just barely noticeable.
Night Fury Isles was dying.
I whined as I looked through the mist. From what I could see, the island was covered in forest and beach. There was one mountain to the right of where we were hovering outside the barrier that had a large cave entrance near the top of it. Everything looked dull and drained of life.
"Either the Night Furies are hiding in that big cave or there's none left.." Hiccup said dejectedly.
"Do you think that's why the island looks so dull..?" Nanna asked and Hiccup nodded.
"It's very possible. Maybe Kala and I really are the last of our species.." He sighed and I crooned sadly as we looked at the dying island before us.
"Won't know till we actually look around, now will we?" Snotlout stated, then he and Hookfang went to go through the barrier, but what happened next was odd.
The barrier shimmered just before they reached it and Hookfang bounced off of it and shook his head from the impact.
"What the?" Snotlout questioned with a bit of anger.
"Did the island just deny us access?" Fishlegs asked, confused.
"Seems that way." Nanna said.
I watched the barrier as the shimmer disappeared and tilted my head as my right earplate twitched. Maybe it was preventing entry because it was too weak to do much else.
"Or maybe the island just doesn't like Snotlout because he reeks." Ruffnut laughed out.
"Oh yeah? You try going through the mist then!" Snotlout challenged and the twins smirked.
"With pleasure my good man." Tuffnut joked as they steered Barf and Belch to the barrier.
The shimmer appeared again just as they were about to pass through and the same thing happened. Barf and Belch were bounced back and shook their heads to clear them.
"Ha! It's not just me!" Snotlout laughed as the twins glared at him.
I ignored their shenanigans as I looked at Hiccup again. I could tell he was trying to figure out how the barrier worked. His eyes were focused and a bit glassy like they always are when he's lost in thought.
"What's on your mind my love?" I asked a bit concerned.
"What if..the island only lets Night Furies pass through?" He questioned, which got everyone's attention.
"So you're saying that you and Kala might be the only ones who get to go through? Are you kidding me?" Snotlout asked, annoyed.
"It's just a theory, but it's a possibility."
"Hiccup's got a point." Nanna said. "So far it's denied anyone that has tried to go through. Maybe it'll let Hiccup and Kala through if they tried."
"The journal did mention that the island moves to protect the dragons that reside on it. Who's to say the barrier doesn't solidify to add onto that protection?" Fishlegs added.
"So then what was the point of all of us coming if only two of us can go through?!" Snotlout shouted in annoyance.
"We didn't know it would do this Snotlout. But now we do. The writer of the journal probably didn't think to add that detail since they most likely wrote the journal for Night Furies in the first place." Hiccup explained.
"So what? You just want us to wait out here while you guys explore the island alone?" Snotlout retorted and I huffed in annoyance.
"There's not really anything else to do in this situation, Snotlout." Hiccup shot back as calmly as he possibly could. "If my theory is right, you guys may want to wait on a nearby island until we get back."
"But waiting around is so boring ." Ruffnut whined.
"While it may be boring, it's better than nothing Ruffnut." Nanna reasoned.
"She's right. Waiting on a nearby island will be better for us than hovering in the air for who knows how long. It'll give us and the dragons some well needed rest from a long day of flying." Fishlegs piped up.
Snotlout sighed and crossed his arms. "Alright, fine. We'll go wait on a nearby island once you guys go through."
Hiccup nodded then rubbed my head as we locked eyes. "Ready milady?" He asked softly.
I purred a bit and nodded. He smiled and adjusted my tailfin, then we hesitantly made our way through the barrier. The shimmer never appeared as we passed through and the both of us shivered from the cool feeling of the mist on our bodies. When we were on the other side I sneezed from the mist that got in my nostrils on the way through.
As soon as we were on the other side, the barrier thickened up significantly and the island became more lively with colors of blues and greens. I raised a brow bone in confusion as the island came to life in front of us and I noticed that Hiccup was confused as well.
The both of us looked behind us when we noticed we couldn't hear the others and our eyes widened a bit when we couldn't see them on the other side of the barrier.
"Well that's concerning.." Hiccup said nervously.
" Very.. " I crooned out just as nervously.
"Let's just hope the others stay true to their word and wait for us nearby."
I nodded and landed on the beach when I felt Hiccup change my tailfin again. I purred at how soft the sand felt on my paws and Hiccup started to purr when he dismounted my back seconds later.
" This is the softest sand I have ever felt. " I crooned in joy and Hiccup chuckled.
"Tell me about it. It's a wonder I can feel the softness of it through my boot right now."
The both of us froze a bit when we heard a distant roar, but that immediately turned into hope as the both of us rushed into the forest to find the source. Our hope rose higher and higher the closer we got to the area we heard it come from and we were not disappointed when we reached a clearing.
There was another Night Fury on the other side of the clearing scaring off some birds that were tearing up the foliage for some unknown reason. They were significantly bigger than I was and from what we could see, they had scars that decorated their body here and there.
" Dumb birds..tearing up my island for their own entertainment..annoying little bastards.. " The dragon huffed out, their voice sounding feminine.
'Good to know that she's a female Night Fury. Do not want to know what a wild male Night Fury would act like.' I thought a bit grateful.
" Um..hey there. You wouldn't happen to know where all the other Night Furies are at would you? " I asked nervously, my earplates lowering to my head a bit as my head lowered a smidge.
" Sorry to disappoint you young ones, but I'm the only one left on the island. " The dragoness said as she turned her attention towards Hiccup and I then her eyes widened when she got a good look at me. " By Akatosh..Kala? " She asked hopefully as she made her way up to us.
Our eyes widened as well when she said my name.
" Y-you know who I am? "
" Why wouldn't I? Your scent is hard to forget my little starlight. How could a mother ever forget the scent of her hatchling? "
"You're Kala's mother?" Hiccup asked in shock. I was too shocked to even say anything myself.
The dragoness chuckled as she looked at my mate. " Yes, I am. My name is Revna. You must be her mate. Your scents mingle together. "
Hiccup and I blushed deeply and I covered my face with a paw. Revna laughed a bit when she saw me hide my face.
" It's nothing to be ashamed of my dears. But if you do not mind me asking, how come you are in human form instead of dragon form like your dragoness young one? " She asked with a small head tilt.
"I-I'm new to the whole dragon thing..I was born a human." Hiccup nervously replied as he rubbed the back of his neck.
" I see. From what I can tell by your scents, it has not even been a month since the two of you marked one another. Am I right? "
"Y-yes ma'am." He said shyly.
She smiled a bit and sat back on her haunches with her tail wrapping around her legs loosely. " Well I will not pressure you into transforming dear. Whatever makes you comfortable. My mate was the same way at first as well. "
" Wait..was my father a human when you met him? " I asked, curiosity overtaking the embarrassment I felt mere seconds ago.
" He was. I see the fish doesn't stray far from the school. What is your name, young one? " Revna asked as her attention went back to Hiccup.
"Hiccup. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third." My beloved replied, still a bit nervous.
" I'm assuming you come from a Viking settlement Hiccup? "
"Yes ma'am. The Isle of Berk in the Barbaric Archipelago. I was born into the tribe that resides there and am the son of the chief."
" My, my. You really know how to pick them, my little starlight. " My mother joked and I whined and hid my face once more. She laughed and smiled. " I meant no harm in those words my dear. Your mate just reminds me a lot of your father is all. "
I uncovered my face with a raised brow bone. " He does? "
She nodded with a smile on her maw. " Indeed he does. Your father wasn't necessarily the son of a chief, but he was well known in his village. I'm sure the tribe he was from is long gone by now though. It's been decades at this point and they were struggling to survive when he came into my life all those years ago. "
" What..what happened to him? " I asked sadly.
I knew from how she was addressing him that he was no longer with us, but knowing how he passed on may help me better understand my father in some odd way.
" Just like any other Viking, your father Lief was as stubborn as every other Viking out there and chose to stay behind and fight the intruder that attacked our nest. He bought you and I time to escape, but he never caught up to us and in the chaos I lost track of you as well. " She explained sadly, looking down with some tears welling up in her brilliant blue eyes.
" At least he died valiantly.. " I sighed, some tears welling up in my own glimmering green eyes.
My mother chuckled sadly and smiled. " That he did my little starlight.. "
"He was very loyal from the sound of it." Hiccup noted.
" Very loyal. He loved all of us dearly. I just wish he was here now so he could see just how much you have grown Kala. I'm sure he would be very proud of you. And I know for a fact that he would approve of you in a heartbeat Hiccup, just as I do. " Revna said, a type of saddened happiness clear in her tone.
" It would've been great if we were able to meet him. But I'm sure he's watching over us from Sovngarde and aiding us when the time is right. " I reasoned with an accepting smile, looking to the sky as the tears in my eyes dried up.
"Correct me if I'm wrong on this milady, but Sovngarde is the dragon equivalent of Valhalla right?" Hiccup asked and I nodded with my signature gummy smile as I looked at him.
" Yes it is. "
" Just as the Vikings have their gods and visions of the afterlife, we dragons have our own god and visions of the afterlife. Both are valid in their own ways and nothing is wrong in having a different view on how the world works. " My mother explained calmly.
"That makes a lot more sense than it should honestly." Hiccup said with a nervous chuckle.
Revna gave him a kind smile. " Quite right you are. It is always odd to consider that another person's view or another species' view on the world could be different compared to yours. But it all really depends on how a person or creature was raised and if they are wise enough to not be rash about the differences. "
We spent what felt like hours conversing with one another in that clearing. It was a wonderful experience to be able to get to know my mother and finally understand more about where I came from and know more about my species.
As the evening made its way well into the night hours, Night Fury Isles illuminated by glowing plants, crystals, and even rocks. It seemed as though everything around us was glowing softly in the night air with hues of blues and greens. The sight was just as beautiful, if not more, as seeing the Northern Lights dance in the night sky above.
" The island is absolutely gorgeous.. " I crooned out in awe as the clearing around us shimmered and danced about thanks to the light breeze traveling across the island.
" You should have seen it when it was luscious with life. The nights were breathtaking and a sight to see. " Revna reminisced. " But alas, the island hasn't been this lively since your great grandfather passed on seventeen winters ago..it has been slowly dying since he passed on, but it seems that your arrival has pumped a bit more life into its veins. " She said, very appreciatively.
Our attention was broken as we heard my mate transform and I giggled as he shrunk down a bit in embarrassment as we looked at him.
" I was starting to feel out of place being the only one in human form that whole time.. " He shyly explained.
" That's quite alright dear. No need to explain your reason for transforming. As long as you are comfortable that is all that matters. "
Hiccup gave her a cute smile and nodded as he made his way over to my side. I gave him a questioning look as he stopped in his tracks with a confused look upon his face.
" What is it my love? " I asked, worried that he had noticed something was off.
He looked between my mother and I then at himself multiple times without saying anything before he answered my question with his own.
" Why am I smaller than you two? "
" What do you mean? You're not smaller than me at all. If anything, you more than likely are bigger than I am in this form. " I said as I got up from where I laid and made my way over to my mate. I froze as I got up close to him and had to look down a bit to make eye contact with him. " Thor almighty..I am bigger than you. "
My mother laughed as she came up to the both of us and we looked at her confused. " The reason you are smaller than us Hiccup is because male Night Furies are supposed to be smaller and sleeker than the females. It allows them to be more agile and faster in flight than the females so they can protect their mate and their young easier. "
" But shouldn't it be the opposite? That doesn't make sense. Why would the males be smaller if they are the ones that protect the nest if anyone attacked? " Hiccup questioned, very confused about the situation.
" I suppose, but it is the same with any Fury species. That is just how it has been since the dawn of time dear. "
" There are other types of Furies?! " Hiccup and I exclaimed out of pure shock.
" Why yes. " Revna stated. " Three other types in fact. There are the Light Furies, the Dawn Furies, and last but not least, the Dusk Furies. I, myself, have never encountered any of them, but I know from stories I have heard from not only my elders, but other dragons I have come across in the many many years I have been alive. "
" How?! We thought that there were only Night Furies! " I asked, more excited than shocked at this point.
" Yes, I could imagine why. The area that you have been living in doesn't attract the other species. Two of them have not even been seen in centuries and from what I have been told, the Dusk Furies enjoy warmer temperatures rather than colder ones. Which I always found rather odd considering the dusk hours are cooler in temperature, but their species name is quite deceiving it seems. " She explained as though it was any normal conversation you would have with a dear friend over some mead.
" And you're absolutely positive you've never seen a single one of any of the other Furies? " Hiccup asked, a bit skeptical about this information.
It did seem rather odd that my mother would know that there were other types of Furies out there, but had never once come across a single one of them before. It just doesn't seem likely with how many winters she must have lived through by now.
" As shocking and hard to believe as this must be for the two of you, I have not. Most of my life has been on this island. The only times I was not here were the times Lief and I left to have our hatchling litters. We wanted you and your siblings, Kala, to have lives beyond the barrier of this island and even then we never came across other Furies in the time we were beyond the mist. " My mother explained and Hiccup and I sighed in defeat.
" Man.. " Hiccup whined.
" I am sure one of these days the two of you will come across one of the other Furies. You have your entire lives ahead of you and I can tell the two of you find joy in exploration. How else would you have found the Isles if not for that? "
" Even so, we wouldn't have been able to find this place on our own by just exploring. We had the help of a journal we found on the island we reside on at the moment and from the aid of a friend who came across the Isles during her travels. " I explained.
Revna's eyes widened when I mentioned the journal and both Hiccup and I tilted our heads in confusion.
" You two found the journal? "
" Yes? A flock of Night Terrors guided us to the cave it was hidden away in for who knows how long. That's how we found out I was slowly transforming into a Night Fury. " Hiccup said.
" I thought that it was lost for good.. " She whispered, seeming to be gobsmacked by the information.
" How did you know about the journal? " I asked, suspicious of my mother's reaction.
She sighed and smiled at the both of us softly. " I know about the journal because your great-great-great grandmother is the one who wrote said journal and your grandfather hid it away on a random island before he was killed. "
" Wait. So you're saying that it's a record that our family kept for generations? "
" In a way, yes. But everything within was all written by your great-great-great grandmother. It was never added onto in any way. " Revna explained.
" But why would Kala's grandfather hide it if the Isles is the perfect hiding place? " Hiccup questioned skeptically.
" I asked the same question when he decided to hide it away. He told me he thought that by hiding the journal somewhere besides the Isles that Vikings would be able to learn more about our species and learn to not fear us. But it seems that it failed as we are the last of our kind. " My mother said with a sorrowful sigh.
Hiccup and I looked down as the both of us whined softly, which made my mother laugh a bit.
" The longer we speak, the more similarities I see between the two of you. It is as though Akatosh created the two of you for the other. "
The both of us blushed profusely under our midnight scales. I covered my face with a paw out of embarrassment, which got her to laugh that much more.
" My oh my. The two of you can get flustered so easily. I was just making an observation young ones. Nothing more. "
I laid on the forest floor covering my face further with my other paw, my tail curling around my form and covering my face all the more. After a couple seconds I peeked from my hiding position when I heard Revna make a curious noise.
" That is rather odd. Why is it that your left tailfin did not splay out like your right, my little starlight? Is it injured? Is that why it is red? "
I stiffened up out of nervousness and I was certain that Hiccup did as well. " W-well..I was shot down three winters ago by a Viking..a-and I lost my left tailfin as I crashed in a forest.. "
Revna's eyes widened. " A Viking what?! What settlement were you flying over? "
" M-my settlement..she was flying over Berk during a raid and a Viking shot her down with a bola. I found her tangled up in it in the forest that same day and freed her. " Hiccup explained to her, both of us silently agreeing to keep it to ourselves who truly shot me down that fateful day.
" So then what is the red fabric you have on your tail if not bloodied bandages? "
" It's a prosthetic tailfin. Hiccup made it for me so that I could fly again. He controls it with a foot pedal that's connected to the saddle. I have another one that reacts to my muscle movements as well that way I can fly on my own, but I am much more at ease when Hiccup is controlling it. " I explained with a light blush dusting my cheeks under my scales.
My mother looked towards Hiccup with an understanding look. " That was why you were still in human form when we met, correct? "
" Yes. But also it was because I'm still getting used to this whole dragon thing. I..had a traumatizing experience the last time we were on Berk that made me fear my dragon form and it hindered me in actually accepting it and getting used to being in this form. " He hesitantly told her.
I whimpered and nuzzled him gently. I knew that it had damaged him, but not to this extent. He purred quietly at the attention and I felt his body relax significantly.
Revna looked to the sky then huffed softly. " It is getting late. We should get out of the night air and rest until morning. " She decided as she looked back at Hiccup and I. " How long will the two of you be staying? "
" We will have to head out in the morning. Our friends are waiting for us beyond the barrier and we don't want to keep them waiting any longer than we have to. " Hiccup explained as he went to transform, but I stopped him with a paw and he raised a brow bone in confusion. " What is it, love? "
" I can be the one to transform this time. You need to get used to your dragon form again. Not to mention my wings are still rather sore from searching for the Isles all day. " I reasoned and he sighed with a small smile on his maw.
" Alright. We'll swap out for now. "
I smiled then transformed into my human form, blowing some of my hair out of my face so it didn't bother me. My mother crooned in awe when she took notice of my human appearance.
" You've grown into a beautiful young woman, my little starlight. "
I blushed lightly and tucked a strand of my midnight locks behind my ear. "Thank you.."
" How I wish I could have been with you as you grew..but it seems that Akatosh had other plans for the both of us..I am very proud of the woman you have become my dear. "
I could see tears forming in her eyes and that made tears form in my own as well. I rushed over to her and hugged her the best I could, the tears in my eyes slipping as I did so. I felt her stand on her haunches, my body being lifted off the ground as she did, and her wrapping her front paws around my form as she hugged me back as her head held me close to her body. I could feel the vibrations of her purrs throughout my body as we embraced one another. It felt comforting in a way. Not like how Hiccup's felt, but a more instinctual comfort rather than a romantic comfort.
After about a minute passed, my mother lowered me to the forest floor and released me from her grip. I wiped at my eyes to get rid of the tears and made my way back over to Hiccup as Revna got back onto all fours. Hiccup nuzzled my side with a smile and I giggled and nuzzled him back just before I mounted his back.
" Follow me. The cave is the best place to rest out of sight. " She said, gesturing her head towards the mountain and taking off in that direction the second she saw we would be right behind her.
I held onto Hiccup the best I could as he followed her to the cave. The night air felt refreshing against my skin as we flew and the sight of the glowing forest below was breathtaking. It only took a couple minutes for us to reach the cave and land right in the entrance.
" The deeper into the cave you go the cooler it gets, but you do not have to go too far in if the two of you do not wish to. I will see you in the morning. Sleep well. " Revna said sweetly, then she made her way deeper into the cave.
I dismounted Hiccup's back and looked around the cave. It was similar to the one on the Edge, but the rocks and crystals were more spread out and became more dense the further into the cave they got.
My attention was taken away from the cave appearance when I heard Hiccup croon to get my attention. I looked at him with a soft smile and noticed that he had situated himself in a small nook of the cave, the ground beneath him heated up from his flames.
" Come lay down. We'll need our rest if we want to be able to get back to the Edge in one fell swoop tomorrow. "
I nodded in agreement and made my way over to him, situating myself close to his body and cuddling up to him the best I could. He wrapped himself around me and made a dome with his wing, his tail curling around me as he did so. I smiled and closed my eyes to get some well deserved sleep.
~~~HTLANF~~~

The following morning Kala and I said our farewells to Revna on the beach we landed on upon our arrival.

" Safe journey to you young ones. I look forward to seeing you again. " Revna said as Kala mounted my back.

"Thank you. We'll keep you in our thoughts and try to visit when we can in the future." Kala replied with nothing but kindness in her words.

Once Kala was secured enough and I could feel her gripping onto her cloak for support, I took off and we went back through the barrier. The both of us shivered from the coolness just like last time and Kala sneezed just like before once we were on the other side.

I stifled a laugh and looked back at her. " How is it that the barrier makes you sneeze, but hasn't affected me whatsoever? "

"I don't know!" She whined as she rubbed at her nose. "The mist keeps going up my nose!"

I laughed a bit and shook my head then stopped flying when I noticed our surroundings.

" Uh..Kala? "

"What?"

" I think the island picked up speed when we went through the barrier yesterday evening. " I said as I looked back at her.

She looked around where we were at and her eyes widened as she did. "Akatosh..we're nowhere near where we were yesterday. Let's just hope the others aren't upset at us for not catching up with them until now."

" Should we just head back to the Edge and see if they decided to head back as well? Or go to the area we found Night Fury Isles first? "

Kala shook her head. "I'd much rather head back to the Edge than go searching for that area again. I'm sure as the night went on they got tired of waiting nearby and just went back to the outpost to rest."

I nodded in agreement and started to fly back to the Edge once I could tell which islands we were close to, neither Kala or I noticing just how fast Night Fury Isles was moving behind us and disappearing into the horizon.

~~~HTLANF~~~
After around three hours of flying, Hiccup and Kala made it back to Dragon's Edge and landed on the landing strip right outside the stables.
Kala dismounted Hiccup's back and removed her cloak from him. Just as she was securing it around herself and Hiccup had transformed, the others had shown up and the majority of them looked happy to see the two Night Furies, but Snotlout had a sour look upon his face and had his hands on his hips.
"Well look who finally decided to come back from Night Fury Isles." He said with anger radiating off of him.
"Well good morning to you too, cousin of mine." Hiccup replied sarcastically as Kala intertwined their hands.
"We thought you would just be exploring the place for an hour or two, not the whole damn night! What was so important on that island that it took the entire night?!"
"My mother is alive." Kala shot back a bit annoyed. "That is why we took so long Snotlout."
"Your mother's alive? That's amazing! What was she like?" Nanna asked excitedly, bouncing in place while her hands were shaking about.
"She was very kind and welcomed us with open arms." She answered with a joyous smile.
"I'm dying to know! Was she hot?!" Tuffnut asked, shaking Kala a bit as he did so.
"Tuff stop shaking her." Hiccup said as he pulled the male Thorston off his mate. "We never saw what she looked like as a human. She was in dragon form the entire time we were there. And before you ask, she looks like Kala's dragon form just bigger because of age and her eyes are blue instead of green."
"Cool.." The twins said in unison and Snotlout huffed with his arms crossed.
"Not fair that you two were the only ones that got to explore the cool looking island.." He complained with a pout.
Hiccup sighed and ran his free hand down his face. "Okay look Snotlout. I get that you're upset that Kala and I were the only ones allowed onto the island, but we had no say in who was allowed to go or not. The island has a mind of its own. But your anger is justified considering all of us traveled to find it yesterday. I would be just as upset as you if I was denied access as well."
Snotlout sighed and rubbed his arm. "Yeah you've got a point..sorry for blowing up at you two.."
"Apology accepted." Kala said with a soft smile.
"Glad to know your mom's alive and whatnot." Snotlout said awkwardly and Kala stifled a laugh.
"Thank you."
"Were there any other Night Furies there?" Fishlegs asked curiously, but his hopes were shot down when Hiccup and Kala shook their heads sadly.
"Only Kala's mother was on the island. All the other Night Furies are dead." Hiccup stated sadly.
"So you three are the only ones left..?" Nanna asked and earned a nod from the female Night Fury as an answer.
"Yes. Hiccup, my mother and I are the last of our kind..that's why the island looked so dull when we found it yesterday.."
"Well there goes the joyous mood.." Ruffnut complained.
It was silent for a few minutes, but it felt longer to Kala for some reason. The silence was eventually broken by Fishlegs just seconds later though.
"Oh! A letter from Stoick came for us just before you got back." He said as he handed Hiccup a small scroll with twine keeping it closed.
Both Hiccup and Kala got confused looks on their faces as Hiccup untied the twine and opened the piece of parchment to read it over. Kala looked over his shoulder to read along.
Dragon Riders,
I do hope this letter gets to you in a time of calm, as I am sure you must be busy with important matters such as the Grimborn brothers as I am writing this. I understand that previous events that transpired during the time of your last visit were not ideal, but I have a proposition.
I am aware that it has only been around two weeks since your last visit, but the council and I have worked diligently to get the village on the same page when it comes to Hiccup and Kala's situation. In light of this, I think it would be best if you all came back to Berk to help get things back to the way they were before things were turned on its head.
I believe that the village will become comfortable around Night Furies once more if Hiccup and Kala were present. It may be a rough start, but I am sure that over time things will get better.
I do not expect you all to rush back here as soon as Sharpshot gets this to you all, but do consider my offer.
Best Regards,
Stoick the Vast, Chief of Berk
Hiccup sighed as he rolled up the letter after reading it out loud for the others after reading it silently to himself.
"Well what should we do? We can't just up and leave Dragon's Edge. We worked really hard on the outpost." Snotlout complained, the twins nodding in agreement with him.
"This has been our home for months now. How does he expect us to just pack up and go back to Berk? We're not done exploring yet!" Tuffnut whined.
"While Dragon's Edge is a wonderful island and a great outpost, Stoick has a point. If we do not go back, the village will never get used to Hiccup and Kala being part of the tribe again. Wouldn't having our own people trust the leaders of our team be better than never being able to set foot on our own land ever again?" Fishlegs questioned.
"Fishlegs is right. I may not have the right to say anything here, but I know what it is like to not be able to go back to my homeland." Nanna stated sadly. "It is one of the worst feelings in the Nine Worlds. Chief Stoick has given us an opportunity to help you all be able to avoid all of this. We should take it."
"If this helps in any way for all of us agreeing, we can still explore the Great Beyond. We would just be based in a different location." Kala offered and the twins immediately lit up.
"Alright, I'm totally cool with going back now." Ruffnut stated with a smirk.
"Same. I missed causing chaos for everyone. There's not enough of us here to get a decent enough reaction." Tuffnut noted with a disapproving shake of the head.
"I swear, if anything bad happens like last time I'm saying I told you so. Because we all know what happened the last time we went back to Berk and I will not risk losing either of you again!" Snotlout stated with finality and Hiccup and Kala smiled.
"We'll take your word for it. Okay, it's decided then. We're moving back to Berk." Hiccup decided.
