Vol. 1 Chapter 3.3 - The Dog and Wolf's Time (1.3)

As the time spent with Si-wol grew longer, Ian’s frown deepened.

“Yes, please come in. We’re about to start the game. Um… today, we’ve prepared a new horror game that you all recommended…”

Si-wol, as always, was interacting with the viewers and preparing to start the game. And Ian, as always, was observing Si-wol, sitting in a blind spot that was not visible on the broadcast.

“Uh… everyone. Do we really have to play this game? There are so many bright and enjoyable new games these days… D-Do we really have to?”

Ian’s gaze turned towards Si-wol, whose face was pale with fear.

Si-wol had the game loading screen displayed on the monitor and was consulting with the viewers. From the speakers, a gloomy and eerie melody that matched the game screen flowed, and every time an unknown woman’s piercing scream echoed, Si-wol’s shoulders visibly twitched.

Ian looked at Si-wol with a perplexed expression, unable to understand.

‘Why would he play a horror game when he’s so scared like that?’

Si-wol seemed as if he would scream and burst into tears if someone even touched her.

Yet, despite being a vampire who feeds on humans, he was afraid of games that only featured imaginary beings like ghosts. Ian had never seen a vampire who was not as vampire-like as him.

In Ian’s eyes, Si-wol was a vampire with many unexpected aspects. He had been closely observing him for a while and had noticed a few characteristics.

The first characteristic was that Si-wol was surprisingly diligent.

He kept his promises with the viewers every day and prepared for broadcasts quite thoroughly. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that he spent about half of his day preparing for the broadcast. Of course, half of that time involved reviewing horror game reviews and occasionally screaming or covering his face with both hands and trembling.

Anyway, it was fascinating to see a vampire so dedicated to a side job. The vampires Ian had encountered so far were typically indifferent or lazy. They enjoyed pleasures or simply passed the time by breathing without much enthusiasm. Among these lethargic beings, Si-wol stood out as someone who lived life fiercely.

However, he still wondered why Si-wol, despite being so terrified of horror games, had chosen to focus on streaming horror games in particular.

“No… When did I ever beg for donations? We’re going to start the game, but I need some mental preparation. It’s really scary, and everyone is scaring me…”

Si-wol’s eyebrows drooped, naturally forming a pout. The corners of his mouth turned downward, creating a lip shape resembling an inverted “U.” With his small and delicate facial features closely gathered together, his expression of sadness was quite adorable.

And this was Si-wol’s second characteristic.

‘How can his expressions be so rich?’

Ian raised one eyebrow, finding it fascinating as he scrutinized Si-wol’s expression. Si-wol tended to have no dull moments when someone observed him closely. He dramatically reacted to various stimuli, expressing his emotions genuinely.

‘Is it because he’s different from the vampires I’ve seen so far…?’

The vampires he had encountered were cold as ice, with nothing but anger in their frozen faces.. And as time passed, their expressions became even more frozen, consumed by the terror of death.

Above all, Ian had never seen them shed a tear. Whether it was due to their pride or some other reason, they never shed tears. As a result, Ian had always believed that vampires were physiologically incapable of crying.

‘But this guy…’

On the other hand, Si-wol was different. From their first meeting, he was uncharacteristically emotional, crying and clinging to him. He would constantly be on edge, lifting his tearful eyes at him like a drenched kitten, occasionally even managing a faint smile. He was truly perplexed in his ability to display such a range of emotions. Perhaps that’s why he couldn’t take his eyes off him.

“Oh!! Thank you, Nectar-nim, for the 30,000 won donation! Wow! Now I’ll start the game.”

Si-wol smiled widely like a blossoming flower, just at the right timing of receiving the donation.

“…..!”

In that moment, Ian froze. It was the first time he had seen such a bright smile from Si-wol since he revealed his existence to him.

Just a while ago, Si-wol seemed on the verge of tears, but now he was smiling brightly like a blooming flower in response to the donation notification. One could even say it was a rather overt capitalist smile.

However, in Ian’s eyes, it didn’t seem forced at all. On the contrary, it appeared genuinely radiant and innocent, adding to its charm.

“…..?”

Ian furrowed his brows in confusion. There was definitely something unsettling in his recent thoughts, but it slipped away too quickly for him to grasp.

At that moment, Si-wol sighed while looking at the mischievous demands of the viewers.

“No, it’s not because of the donation that I’m starting now. I was actually planning to start right on time, exactly at the hour. I have this obsession with being punctual, so when it’s 55 minutes or 58 minutes, my fingers get all tangled up. I’m sure there are people like me among you, right?”

Si-wol retorted playfully with a smile, and despite being scared of the horror game, he started playing it. And at the same time, a scream erupted.

Ahhhh

!!”

Si-wol screamed in shock as if struck by lightning when a ghost’s face filled the monitor screen. The chat box became lively with reactions.

≫ Scaredy-cat is here~

≫ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

≫ Vampi-nim is the king of scaredy-cats ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

≫ Aisshh

ㅠㅠ because of Vampi-nim, I got even more scared

≫ Ahh ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

≫ Really startled;

≫ Other scaredy-cats got scared because of the scaredy-cat, too ㅠㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

≫ If this scares you, what will you do later?;;;;;

≫ OMG Vampi-nim, it’s scarier behind that

≫ Bet a thousand won that he’ll scream next turn ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

≫ Someone check if Vampi-nim wet his pants, who knows

≫ Bet a thousand won that it was an involuntary reaction

In a voice filled with injustice, Si-wol defended himself against the viewers who were teasing him.

“I-I didn’t mean to scare you just now, you know? I shouted for you all to cover your eyes 0.1 seconds before the ghost popped out. Instead of praising me for being thoughtful, you all just criticized me… It’s really unfair, everyone.”

However, he couldn’t hide the teardrops shimmering in his terrified eyes.

≫ That’s what the scaredy-cat said

≫ ??

≫ ????

≫ Yes?

≫ ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?ㅇ?

≫ Yes. It was the excuse of a scaredy-cat.

≫ Vampi-nim, now you’re even trying comedy…

Si-wol, whether out of pride or a trick, boasted to the viewers. The problem was that his boasting was so obvious that no one believed him.

“Just watch. Now that we’ve experienced this section once, we won’t be as startled anymore, right? Alright, if I open this door, a ghost will pop out, right? Did everyone close their eyes? Opening the door now… Opening the doo─,

ahhhh

…!!”

In the end, Si-wol was startled just like before when he saw the same ghost in the same scene, and he panicked and stumbled. As he flailed around, his hand accidentally grabbed onto something.

That something was none other than Ian’s hand.

“….!”

Si-wol froze in surprise when he saw his hand holding onto Ian’s hand out of nowhere. His small, pale hand tightly grasped Ian’s own hand. Although Si-wol thought he should immediately let go and dismiss this as nothing, his body strangely stiffened and couldn’t move.

Hnngh

… How scary—

hnn

,

nngh

?”

However, before Ian could pull his hand away, Si-wol noticed his own state first.

Ahh

!”

Si-wol, surprised that he had caught something he shouldn’t grab, quickly pulled his hand away. At that moment, Ian felt uncomfortable with his sudden action.

‘He grabbed my hand because he was scared…’

But as Si-wol turned his head, he saw that the ghost had not yet disappeared from the game screen. Thanks to that, he squeezed his eyes shut and firmly grabbed onto Ian’s hand once more.
