chapter 14
14. The more you say no, the more excited I get
First came the grandpas and grandmas with secret manuals, followed by uncles and aunties with divine artifacts. Nieru’s script is simply at the point where she could “automatically level up to 999, one slash and a field full of divine gear” just by walking. If Nieru really trained and leveled up like this, according to the script, she would definitely have a chance to kill me later, maybe even in one hit.
Luckily, having known in advance about Nieru’s encounter with the “grandpas and grandmas” script, and having directly intercepted it for several days, there won’t be any more appearances of grandpas and grandmas in Nieru’s script for now. At least for this period, this big and fair maid won’t suddenly “max level.”
It should have been so, but… Kefir’s increasingly strange behavior these past few days has made me, who knows the script and is somewhat concerned about every move of this protagonist, feel uneasy.
Today is no different.
“Clearly just a charlatan who deceives for others, yet his cooking skills are on par with Nieru’s.”
After reluctantly praising my exquisite skills honed from running around everywhere, Kefir hastily finished breakfast and stood up. Unfortunately, what follows is not the slightly awkward atmosphere of a “warm life” with one man and two women, but rather, like these past few days, the “protagonist’s” strange behavior continues.
Nieru, who was clearing the plates, immediately looked over.
“Miss, you’re not going out today too, are you…?”
“Yes, I’m going out. You don’t need to follow, especially you, Ogelid. Stay put and behave while I’m gone, I’m watching you with a contract!”
Kefir picked up her luggage, and as usual, threatened me not to lay a hand on Miss Nieru, then hurried off with some urgency in her steps. Such behavior from Kefir has been happening every day since I officially latched onto her coattails, ahem, became her personal priest.
I’m not worried that Kefir, carrying luggage that looks like it contains some clothes, is off to do something strange. After all, she’s the protagonist! Where would a protagonist of such a serious world get an “adult-rated script”? But such slightly off behavior, not quite fitting for Kefir, the “pride of heaven,” does strike me as odd.
If something happens to Kefir, I won’t be able to cling to those coattails securely! As Ogelid, the big villain, my life now entirely depends on Kefir. Even if it’s just to repay her, I must ensure Kefir’s “protagonist’s journey” is smooth sailing.
Should I try… to investigate?
As I was thinking this, Miss Nieru, who had quietly approached after Kefir left, spoke up.
“Mr. Ogelid…”
“Yes… Yes! What is it, Nieru?”
I was genuinely nervous because Nieru, if she follows the script, could have a reason to kill me at any moment! However, having “driven away the suspicious grandmas and grandpas” these past few days, Nieru’s attitude towards me has become increasingly friendly.
In the blink of an eye, I saw that large, white expanse—what man could resist not taking a glance!
“Although it’s another trouble for you, could you… perhaps think of a way to help the young miss?”
“…What do you mean?”
I immediately averted my gaze that had unconsciously drifted towards Nell’s chest. After all, every move of Kefir, the true protagonist, is what’s most important to me.
Moreover, Nell, originally a maid in Kefir’s household, might know details far more precise and thorough than what I could glean from the script.
“In fact, before the young miss called me here to help, it had already started. It seems there’s been some friction between the young miss and the head of the house… her father. Recently, these conflicts seem to have grown, escalating to arguments. The young miss came to the town outside the capital, perhaps… just because she didn’t want to go home, choosing to hide in this secret base instead.”
“…”
Simply put: Kefir, the “protagonist,” has been troubled lately. But in the script, Kefir is truly a favored daughter of heaven! With a personality that’s completely “protagonist-like,” she naturally wouldn’t harbor any petty concerns that a little girl might have. So… what could be troubling Kefir?
Without hesitation, I flipped through Kefir’s upcoming script in my mind! Since Nell had shared quite a bit of insider information, Kefir’s script became clearer and more detailed!
[Kefir, troubled by her worries, didn’t immediately return to the academy or her home in the Great Ying Empire. Her outing today was just an excuse to stay in a quiet place outside until late into the night.]
I’m not gathering a harem here! What use is the address to me! Hurry up and tell me what’s troubling Kefir!
[Kefir’s troubles have nothing to do with Ogelid. On the contrary, Ogelid’s recent appearance has brightened Kefir’s mood considerably.]
Ha! Is that so!? Should I thank the script for telling me I’ve gained her favor!
Sigh… The script can’t find a clear reason for now, but now that I know Kefir is troubled, I don’t have the heart to enjoy the time “holding onto Kefir’s coattails, with no upgrade events for Nell.” Given Kefir’s personality, whatever troubles her can always be coaxed out indirectly.
Kefir’s every action is linked to my fate; I can’t be careless.
“How can I help?”
“You could use a prophecy to kindly deceive the young miss—after all, isn’t that your forte?”
Hey, don’t call the script a deception.
But using a “prophecy” to fish for information does fit my charlatan identity, ensuring Kefir doesn’t feel out of place. Nice, Nell, I didn’t expect the wisdom in your head to be as substantial as your bust.
“Then let’s get moving. I’ll go shopping in the streets, and you…”
“Eh, no, no, no! I can go shopping alone! And I think I know where Kefir is, I’ll go find her directly.”
I hurriedly stopped Nell. After all… if she went out and ran into some old man or woman, I couldn’t handle it.
“Eh? How do you know…”
“It’s the power of ‘prophecy.'”
I rarely get to act cool, but unexpectedly…
“…”
Nell actually blushed!
Her gaze was fiery as she looked at me. Thinking about how her script is all about “kill, kill, kill” me, I can’t help but feel nervous.
And then…
“Then I’ll follow you…”
I shivered and vowed never to act cool again.
