Chapter 41
Chapter 41 “Huh?” Angela was taken aback by the directness of the question. Her brows narrowed as if she was secretly offended. As if she sensed my words had stung. “… Rosieta, you speak so sharply. It seems like it’s only for me. Honestly, I feel bad.” Angela crossed her arms and glared at me. It was as if she was saying, ‘I’m offended by you, and I want you to apologize to me.’ “Are you still upset about that time I told Miriam about your string?” “I beg your pardon?” “I apologized. How long are you going to be this cold?” Angela scratched my insides. She spoke as if I was some kind of narrow-minded person who couldn’t coolly forgive things from the past! When I pointed out what had been bothering Marie, she cleverly brought up my story to distract me. I looked at her with a tired look and let out a small sigh. “Yes, just like Angela said, Miriam is probably a very bad person. Because she’s a person who tries to suppress the friends she works with, just because she’s more experienced as a maid.” Only then did Angela nod. “See? I wouldn’t want to be roommates with someone like that either! Please consider my position, too. She has a mean personality and tiring me up every day, and it’s really….” “But Angela shouldn’t have done that last night.” “What?” I replied firmly, and Angela’s eyes swayed from side to side. Marie also quietly put down her juice and looked at me. “Wh-what did I do? Why are you so mean to me? You treated the maid who came for the first time yesterday kindly….” Angela threw her hands in the air in disbelief. I’m the one who’s stunned. “Are you really asking because you don’t know? Angela, you’re the one who told Miriam about my secret. And I was trying to forgive you because you apologized to me, but you’re joining Miriam and harassing the new maid just because it’s been so long since you apologized to me?” “Well, that’s….” “Did you think it was okay to harass the other person as long as it wasn’t me?” “…….” “Isn’t that the real Angela, you make excuses about Miriam, but it’s your choice to bully others, and I was really disappointed in you yesterday, you shouldn’t have done that.” “Rosieta, you..!” Angela’s face was now steaming red. She shook her fists like an angry person. Her eyes were glazed over, as if tears were about to fall. She opened her mouth as if she was going to ask me something, but when she saw Miriam open the door and come out into the communal kitchen, she shut it tight. Now that Miriam is in front of us, she can no longer say, ‘Miriam made me do it!” or “Miriam is the worst, and I’m not.’ ‘I hate them both, but it’s nice timing.’ When I glanced at Miriam, Angela’s mouth clamped shut, and she glared at me with red, bloodshot eyes. “… I won’t talk to you anymore!” She shouted. Then, like a tragic heroine, she ran out of the room without eating breakfast. Funnily enough, she didn’t want to cry in front of people.“What?” Miriam, with her long, straight hair, muttered as she looked at Angela who had run out. I shrugged, picked up the bread again, and spread some butter on it. Marie also looked in the direction Angela had left and shook her head. “How old is she? She acts immature.” “I know.” I also agree. ‘I hope I’ll be less tired now.’ * * * Angela, who ran out of the kitchen, huffed impatiently. “Funny. Are you giving me advice because you think you can do something? To think of a newbie like you who has only been here for a month.” If only Miriam hadn’t come out of the room at that time, she wouldn’t have accepted Rosieta’s remark. Although she wasn’t as good as Miriam, but she had a long career as a maid and was older and more experienced than Rosieta. So to dismiss such an appointment with a simple remark would do Rosieta more harm than good. Angry and furious, Angela shoved her hands in her pockets and headed for the mansion. As she entered the mansion’s kitchen, she saw a maid preparing tea. Angela approached with a look on her face that said she had made a successful decision. “Hey!” “Yes? Angela?” “Are you going to serve the tea? Can I do that?” When Angela spoke with a bright smile, the maid made a flustered face. “Mrs. Rosa told me to ask Rosieta to do it.” For a moment, Angela frowned. Also, Rosieta’s name came up. She started to dislike the name in just a few minutes. ‘How can she monopolize the tea time to such an extent? All you have to do is put tea leaves in hot water, wait a while, and then pour it. I think anyone can do it.’ While everyone else was doing physical labor, such as sweeping and mopping stairs, I felt sick to my stomach thinking about Rosieta elegantly serving tea alone. She is younger than me. Angela watched a maid of her age loading tea utensils onto a trolley and quickly grabbed the handle and said, “I’ll just do it today. Rosieta going to be late.” “What? But… Do you know how to serve tea?” “Uh, yeah, I know. It’s easy.” In fact, Angela’s main job was preparing ingredients and cooking in the kitchen. Even in her previous job, at the Baron residence, she was a kitchen maid who spent her time only preparing and buying ingredients. But Angela nodded, as if she knew what she was doing, and pushed the trolley toward the drawing room. Even though it was early in the morning, Holden executives, Daniel, and Colin were still in the middle of a meeting with papers spread out in front of them. Angela walked toward them, her head held high. Dragging the trolley along, she lowered her knees and placed a tray of finger foods and tea bowls on the table. Placing the plates of snacks on the table without making a sound was, in her opinion, the perfect touch. At that time, Daniel, who was sitting on the sofa and talking with executives, turned his attention to Angela. ‘It’s not Rosieta.’ Instead of Rosieta, with her messy red hair tied up, Angela with freckles stood up. Perhaps Rosietta had been assigned a different job today. Angela secretly wiped her sweaty palms on her apron and then picked up the teapot. ‘Ugh, it’s heavy.’ The kettle full of tea was quite heavy and hot. This damn teapot had obviously sacrificed practicality for pretty looks. The porcelain teapot was terribly heavy. It seemed like I had to give up the idea of elegantly pouring tea with one hand. Angela strained her forearms and poured the tea into the set teacups. Drop- “Ouch, it’s hot.” A few drops of hot water splashed onto the back of one of the executives’ hands. Angela was surprised and covered her mouth. “Ar-are you okay?” “Oh, yes. it’s okay.” The executive waved his hand to Angela’s flustered face. He pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the back of his hand. Angela was fidgeting and had barely finished pouring tea into a teacup. Another executive, who was drinking a cup full of green tea, frowned and pursed his lips. The faces of Daniel and Colin, who were drinking tea together, also became subtle. “Does it fit your taste?” Angela asked, perplexed. Colin, who was known for his kindness, even to the maids, failed to control his expression and wondered how to say this. “Hmm, the water temperature seems a little high. When brewing green tea, the water doesn’t have to be that hot.” The water Angela had brought was hot enough to make him furious as soon as a few drops splashed on the back of his hand. Daniel put down his tea after a few sips. Although he seemed reluctant to speak, he also thought that green tea was too bitter. Colin lowered his eyebrows and smiled. “You should practice more. You’ve done a good job, you may take your leave.” He was probably being polite, but he couldn’t hide his expression at her lack of skill. Angela blushed bright red and hurriedly pushed the trolley away. “What a disgrace, really.” * * * “Oh, really? Angela told you she’s serving tea?” “Yes, she won’t be back until afternoon tea.” After a leisurely breakfast, I returned to the mansion and heard unexpected news. It is said that during the morning meeting, Angela stopped by to serve tea. I bit my lip in disappointment. “That’s too bad. If I could, I would have explained to Marie how to choose the tea leaves and all that stuff, how to make a good cup of tea.” “Do I need to know that to be able to serve tea?” “Yes! I learned it a while ago.” After learning from Colin for a few days, I now know how to do the basics. Colin, who had worked at a tea shop for several years, was truly the best teacher. “I worked at a restaurant for over 10 years. So, I learn everything quickly.” I looked around and brought out two mops. “Mrs. Rosa hasn’t returned yet. Shall we start by cleaning the stairs?” “Okay.” “It can be difficult at first because it takes a lot of effort. Still, it’s something you can finish early if you have the skills.” Of course, there is tremendous pain in the beginning. I smiled bitterly, remembering cleaning the stairs when I first came to the Count’s residence. ‘Oh, I guess I’ll have to make sure I eat something good for lunch.’ Marie and I headed to the mansion’s great hall. “When I first came here, I cleaned the stairs for about a week. Once you finish cleaning the stairs in the hall, you can go out to the garden and clean the stairs outside.” “There are a lot of stairs. Maybe it’s because it’s a mansion.” “I also suffered from back pain for about a week. Let me help you a little. It will be less difficult if we do it together.” “Thank you.” Marie took one look at the grand staircase of the great hall leading to the entrance and nodded. No matter how huge the stairs are, if two people do it, the burden will be less. As she wiped down the two sides of the massive staircase, she continued to talk to Marie. “Then, when you lived in your hometown, what did you do before you got into debt and had to find a job?”. “I went to school near the capital. I wanted to become a lawyer.” “Wow, really?” “Even though my family was poor, we were a family that had been working in the legal profession for generations.” “That’s cool. So Marie is smart because she takes after her parents?” I said with genuine admiration, and Marie’s small lips curled up. She seemed embarrassed by my compliment. “Then why don’t you get a job other than a maid, maybe a clerkship at a lawyer’s office somewhere.” “I’m not a lawyer, I’m just a student of the law, and I’m too young, and I’m a girl, so the hourly wage is lower than here, and In some cases, they don’t pay the full price.” “Oh my.” Apparently, there are still plenty of underpaid workers on the fringes of the capital. In Count Drunia, there seemed to be no such thing as late payment or underpayment. Well, it doesn’t seem like a big deal for the male protagonist to cut off the maids’ salaries to save on labor costs, right? In that sense, the employee welfare of Holden and the Count’s residence can be considered to be quite good. ‘Holden is also a target group, so I think there will be at least some law department.’ Wait, has a lawyer ever been involved in a meeting? I was lost in thought with my chin resting on the mop handle. I saw someone walking behind Marie. “Rosieta.” It was Daniel.
