Chapter 37: Things to do before leaving (1)
It’s been nearly three weeks since I traveled all the way to Canbina to take care of some demons over the summer.
Similarly, it’s almost three weeks since I’ve been observing Alex, and I’m still not sure how he knows the future.
I’ve come up with a few hypotheses, but most of them seem to lack a bit of logic.
As one of the possibilities that I think is most likely, I am cautiously speculating that Alex may have become a saint, the hope of the world, a person with mystical powers who emerges every few hundred years to avert a crisis in humanity.
Beings who are named saints in this way have a few things in common.
First, they must be female.
They must also be able to wield light magic.
In addition, they must be highly educated and willing to improve.
Finally, they must have a good heart and be loved by all.
These were the requirements to become a saint.
A saint who is recognized and awakened by the goddess of the world is given special powers according to the goddess who awakened her as a saint.
…As you may have noticed at this point in the story, who would become a saint was originally predetermined from the beginning.
She was the original heroine of the game, but has now disappeared from the story entirely.
In the original plot, before the end of her second year at the Academy, Miss Sierra would be awakened to sainthood by the goddess of prophecy, Cassandra.
She is given the blessing of prophecy, which allows her to see future events.
However, unlike the original Sierra, the possessed Miss Sierra lacked many of the qualities of a saint, and as a result, she was unable to receive the prophetic blessing.
It’s not unheard of in the game, either.
When you don’t pay attention to the game, such as choosing the worst option out of all the options and doing nothing in battles, guardian events, etc.
Roughly less than 1% of the time, this will result in you not being recognized as a saint.
If it were a game, it means you’re so screwed you’d have to restart.
The problem is, this is real life, not a game, and there are no save loads.
Honestly, given Miss Sierra’s history, it doesn’t make sense for her to be blessed by a goddess.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility that she hid the fact that she had it, but if she did, she certainly wouldn’t have met her end like that.
If she really did have future vision in the first place, she should have given up on Alex and come to apologize to me a long time ago.
Anyway, that she was not blessed by the Goddess up to this point, it’s a settled fact.
From here on out, I’m going to talk about one tenuous possibility, one that might be a bit anomalous.
Miss Sierra’s misbehavior eventually led to the Goddess’ blessing being repelled, but perhaps the Goddess of Prophecy wanted to find a saint other than Miss Sierra.
After all, the Goddess of Prophecy is part of the world.
Maybe she didn’t want to see humanity destroyed.
I thought that she would give the prophetic blessing to someone other than Miss Sierra, and cautiously speculated that it might have been Alex.
After all, even though Alex doesn’t use light magic, the holy sword of protection he wields is inscribed with the power of light.
Besides, at this point in time, there was no one else who deserved the prophecy’s blessing but Alex.
It was a troubling choice for Cassandra, too.
To ignore tradition and bless a man for the first time, or to quietly ignore a future that might lead to her ruin.
Normally, I’d still choose the latter, but I’m willing to give the former a chance.
It’s a ridiculous assumption, but at least it explains Alex’s attitude.
My fiancé knows what’s going to happen in the future and can act early because he’s been given the power to see the future by Cassandra, the goddess of prophecy.
The exception, which has never happened before, was the choice that was made when Sierra, who was eligible, became ineligible.
I’ve speculated that Alex has kept the secret from me until now, perhaps because he’s ashamed.
The title for a person blessed by a goddess has been fixed at “saintess” since time immemorial.
There were no examples of “saint”, so if it turned out that Alex was blessed, he would most likely be called “saintess” as well.
Being called saintess when you’re a man is, frankly, a recipe for ridicule.
If I were Alex, I would have kept it to myself, especially from my fiancé and family.
I’d be scared for myself.
It would have taken someone of my caliber to come up with such a reasonable conclusion from the sparse information I was given.
Now that I know the truth, there’s only one thing to do.
I don’t say anything and go along with it.
It’s a fact that Alex probably doesn’t want anyone to know, so I’ll do him the favor of keeping it a secret.
Like, for example, right now.
“Ariana, there’s going to be a big demon wave any minute now, and I’m going to need your help.”
Alex didn’t sugarcoat it or spin it, just spoke intuitively.
It’s one thing to keep the secret that you’ve become a saint, but it’s another to protect something more important.
Fortunately, I’m not the kind of person who’s so clueless that I’d say, “Okay, saintess,” so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
“I get it, Alex. I guess we’ll just have to work together to take this one down.”
“Yeah, please. I’ll definitely need Ariana’s help this time.”
I grabbed my own staff, which I had prepared in advance, and followed Alex out of the room.
It was time to begin the last thing I needed to do before leaving the shores of Canbina, where I had spent a short time.
* * *
As we hurriedly walked towards the shore, we could already see signs in the distance that a second wave of demons was about to appear.
At first glance, it looked like hundreds of low- to mid-level demons were crawling up the beach and moving inland en masse.
Alex had seen it coming, and had stopped them early, so no damage had been done yet.
“This should be a good place to warm up.”
Grabbing Alex’s shoulder as he was about to charge straight into the center of the group with his sword, I shook my head to indicate that he should wait.
“Let me do the first strike.”
If he tried to single-handedly clear out hundreds of demons he’d run out of steam before the named monsters we needed to take down appeared.
This is also when my staff comes into its own in these kinds of situations.
I gathered a large amount of dark energy at the tip of my staff and stretched it as far as I could against the scattered horde of demons.
With the tip of my staff, a staff made just for me, hundreds of branches of black energy formed a parabola of different shapes.
The outstretched streaks of energy flew precisely at the positions of the demons walking out onto the shore, stabbing and piercing them in the heart.
“Kiek!”
“Kurrrrr!”
“Kee-ek, kek!”
Due to the dispersal of the power, only a few of them seemed to not fall under the blows, but for more than 90% of the demons, the divided power was enough.
“It’s a large-scale magic after all, so I feel a bit tired after using it.”
“Rest, I’ll take care of the rest.”
“Please, Alex.”
It would be a waste to use my magic again to finish off a bunch of guys who are barely clinging to life. I’m sure Alex knows that too.
If I use my magic, which can only be used once or twice, to deal with the remnants, it will actually be difficult in the future battles with named monsters.
The real enemy I have to deal with today is not this small army of mobs.
This is by no means to say that this large group of demons isn’t dangerous.
If we let this horde invade the towns beyond the coast, we’ll have the entire town in ruins in less than a day.
However, if the monster army was only going to end at this point, there was no reason for Alex, who was not wasting time, to still remain in here.
Even a well-trained army should be able to take out a group of mid-level demons.
The only reason Alex and I haven’t left the shores of Canbina to this day is because there’s something else we can do.
-Goo-goo-goo.
It was a heavy, thick sound, and I could feel it close, because of the vibrations shaking the ground.
A giant shadow began to rise from the depths of the ocean, growing in size as it approached the shore.
A huge, rising spray of water hit the shore, and in an instant, as if a tide had risen, the shore was being engulfed by a violent wave.
“Alex, look out!”
Alex, who had been clearing the remaining demons from the shore, also felt the danger and used arcane magic to create a magical shield to protect himself from being swept away by the waves.
The star of today’s show emerged from beneath the water, letting out a deep cry as it slowly revealed itself.
It was a green, rocky giant covered in algae and coral, and the second named monster that we had to defeat before leaving the Canbina Coast.
