Chapter 38: Things to do before leaving (2)
Seeing the rock giant with my own two eyes for the first time, its size and imposing presence was even more overwhelming than in the game.
Grishna, the giant of the deep, was a type of rock giant, covered in seaweed and coral.
13…no, at least 15 meters.
Considering that Krebiel’s maximum height is about 10 meters, it is definitely an overwhelming size.
Naturally, it’s going to be trickier to defeat than Krebiel.
“…….”
Alex emerges from the water and out of the shield, his eyes locked with Grishna’s.
He’s ready for his final task on the shores of Canbina, and he’s determined to get it done.
“Alex, the giant’s weakness is its neck, you must stab it precisely with your holy sword!”
Grishna’s weak spot is the neck, where the bonds are the weakest, and that’s where you need to aim your light attack magic.
In the original story, this would be the standard way to play the game, with Sierra’s light magic delivering the finishing blow while the other characters bide their time.
Of course, we can’t expect to attack with light magic now, so we only have one light power at our disposal.
If it’s the light power contained in Alex’s holy sword, it’s certainly capable of delivering a valid blow to Grishna.
In the end, once again, we’re forced to put Alex in a dangerous position and force him to deliver the finishing blow.
I don’t want to rely on Alex too much, but he’s the only one who can handle this right now.
“Got it!”
I still haven’t figured out how he’s going to get up there and deliver his attack, but Alex’s reply shows that he understands what I’m saying.
Using dark magic as a foothold to leap would probably not work for this operation.
I don’t know if I have enough magic left to create a second foothold, and my magic doesn’t have the range to reach that high.
So I’m going to have to use a slightly different method.
I’ll have to try to time my opponent to reveal his weaknesses, or use a technique that can counterattack.
The bizarre cries of the sea giant washed ashore once again.
Dale and Ellis are in a fighting stance, as if they’re trying to do something, but it’s pretty hard to get help from two non-major characters.
In other words, if me and Alex can’t kill it, we’re screwed.
I feel like the weight on my shoulders just got a little bit heavier.
Originally, I was going to live out the rest of my life in Colona, in the village after the breakup, in a leisurely fashion.
I didn’t realize that I’d be risking my life one day to fight a giant monster.
Not that I don’t like it now, of course.
I’m willing to put up with this if it means I can remain Alex’s fiancée.
-Thud.
With the sound of rock rubbing against rock in the crevices of the giant’s body, a massive right fist soared into the air.
A fist on the first strike, a good opportunity came sooner than I thought.
“Alex, your chance will come in just a few moments…on my signal, you’ll climb up the giant’s body and plunge your holy sword straight into the nape of his neck!”
As soon as Alex gave the signal of understanding, the giant’s right fist slammed into the ground.
The heavy, swift attack created a crater of sand and a large crack in the ground, and Alex, who had ducked to safety, immediately reached up to ride the giant’s arm as it slammed into the ground.
“Ughhhh….”
Of course, Grishna wasn’t going to wait for Alex to act, and he began pulling his arm up for his next attack.
“…Uhhhhhhh?”
Well, it looked like he was about to do exactly that, though the giant’s body remained motionless as if it were pinned to the ground.
As planned, it must have worked.
The keywords of dark magic are destruction and annihilation.
As long as I use these two forces well, dark magic can be applied in any number of directions.
The temperature of an object is determined by the substances that make it up, and how fast they are moving through it.
In other words, if I can slow down the matter that makes up an object, I can artificially lower its temperature with dark magic.
True to his nickname, Grishna is a sea giant, and despite being a rock giant, he contains a large amount of water in his body.
Still, since it’s a creature from the depths of the ocean, its own temperature isn’t very high, so it’s not impossible to freeze a giant forearm if I lower its temperature just a little bit.
If I use dark magic to remove any water molecules in Grishna’s right arm that are above a certain speed.
The activity of the remaining water molecules would also slow down significantly, and the overall temperature would naturally drop.
The result is that suddenly Grishna’s body is frozen, and he is unable to move, with one arm stuck in the ground.
“He won’t be able to move for a while!”
“Thanks, Ariana!”
It was one of the spells I developed during my frenzy of magic development, so of course Alex knew immediately what I was using.
So, without hesitation, he jumped onto Grishna’s stiffened forearms and scrambled up the giant’s body.
I tried to tell him to be careful, that the ice would make the surface slippery, but apparently that was an unnecessary concern.
I could see him using fire magic to melt the exact spot where his footsteps would hit, and then climbing up the rocky body to avoid slipping.
That kind of split-second situational judgment is Alex’s forte.
Just when it occurred to me that we should be able to handle the second demon at this rate.
“…Huh?”
A life-threatening event occurred while Alex was running on Grishna’s right arm.
Instead of Grishna’s right arm frozen to the ground, his unfrozen left arm began to move.
As if noticing the human being crawling up his arm, Grishna was using his hand to pull Alex away from his body.
It was impossible for me to freeze his entire body because he was such a huge giant, and I could only immobilize one arm.
At this rate, Alex would be knocked down by the one-sided attack before he could drive his holy sword into the back of the giant’s head.
The speed with which Grishna moves his body is quite impressive, and there’s nowhere to dodge, especially on that straight arm.
The only way to avoid the attack is to jump off the giant’s body now, using Wind Magic to land on the ground and run away.
That way, at least Alex would be safe.
Of course, with me an empty tin can after using my magic twice, and Alex a golden opportunity lost, there’s no way the two of us can take down Grishna on our own.
If Kael or Charlotte were to join us, there might be another way, but we don’t have the luxury of waiting for them to join us.
In the meantime, the villages around here will be razed to the ground by Grishna, and many will lose their homes and loved ones.
“……!”
Alex also noticed the presence of the other arm coming towards him, and he hesitated a bit, unsure of what to do.
There’s no time to think, I’ve already used my magic twice today, this is my last chance.
“Alex, just trust me and keep running!”
As if he understood me from a distance, Alex’s steps began to move rapidly upward again.
I prepared to use my third spell, to give Alex one last chance.
Just one more time.
I knew I’d be drained the moment I used it, but if I could just take down Grishna, it would be worth it.
I gathered my energy into a single point at the end of my staff, creating a dark energy sphere that I compressed as much as I could so that it would extend out to its maximum range.
Then, aiming at Grishna’s left hand, which was trying to brush off Alex, I fired a pea-sized ball of highly concentrated dark energy.
-Poof.
The dark energy sphere hit Grishna’s left hand, which was about to strike Alex, and with a small explosion, the path of the palm was slightly deflected.
That was all it took for Alex to dodge Grishna’s attack.
Ducking down towards the gap that had opened up, Alex dodged out of harm’s way, and then climbed onto the giant’s shoulders, reaching the back of Grishna’s head.
There’s nothing I can do now.
I’m nothing but a tin can, having completely drained the last of the magic in my body.
I can only pray that Alex succeeds in this last chance I’ve created.
Looking up through the dimness of my vision, I see Alex pulling the holy sword from his right waistband just in time to drive a blow of light into the nape of Grishna’s neck, his weakest point.
My body lay down on the wet sand, accompanied by the sensation one gets when one’s magical powers run out.
