Chapter 80: The Final Battle (7)
As the darkness deepened beneath the sky, the moment of truth had already arrived.
Eamon and Charlotte have already taken care of the demons that stand between me and Azazel.
The only weakness, the defenseless Ariana, is being protected by Kael.
She is ready to assist me at any time to prevent any other danger he might pose.
There are no longer any distractions between me and him.
I suppose you could say that I have a chance to meet him sword to sword.
“…You seem overconfident.”
A dull expression came out of the mouth of the guy who had confronted me properly for the first time.
“You think so?”
I sheathed my holy sword, ready to thrust at any moment, then turned to the creature and replied nonchalantly.
“At least, better than you were in your past life. Is it because you have something to trust?”
Something to trust…
Not that I didn’t like Ariana or anyone else, but it was for a different reason that I was able to smile now that I was in a confrontation with him.
“…Well.”
It was a thought that had been in my head for a long time.
This was my chance to test out my plan to kill him with a single blow.
It was a stage that was enough to lift my spirits, as it might be the last battle of my life.
I channeled arcane magic power into my body, while surrounding my feet with wind magic and getting ready to run.
I’m ready to close the distance on him at any moment.
If possible, a single stab would be most efficient since a long fight will only exhaust me.
I’ll be the one at a disadvantage if it goes on too long.
“…….”
Body light. Sword heavy.
I lean forward as far as I can, almost to the point of falling.
After minimizing my resistance to the wind, I struck the ground with a straight, spurred footstep to close the distance to his heart once and for all.
“Hmph.”
As if bored with my actions Azazel let out a leisurely yawn.
I laughed at him for letting his guard down and closed the gap in one fell swoop.
Fifty meters, forty meters, thirty meters….Before my abnormally forward leaning body could fall, I thrust my lower half forward with my next step.
Faster than I fall, I move forward to make the one stab I’ve been longing for so many years.
Twenty meters. Ten meters. Five meters.
All it takes to defeat him is a single stab filled with light magic.
With that, the Demon King will be destroyed, and the great evil that will destroy Leavrov will be defeated.
“…Simple.”
Of course, if it were as easy as I hoped, I wouldn’t have gone through all this trouble.
Another magical sword protruded from Azazel’s side and was thrust toward my precariously positioned body.
Judging by the length and size of the blade, it must have been forged with a great deal of magic.
If I maintained my speed and ran forward, I would be cut down by that unstable blade but if I slowed down, my stance would surely collapse and I would fall.
I might be able to parry it with a swing of my holy sword, but that would take away my only means of stabbing it in the heart.
I’m sure that’s what he’s aiming for.
I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let that happen.
The hand opposite the one holding the holy sword slips into my arm, and I reach for my concealed sidearm.
In one swift motion, I stepped forward to collide with the demon’s magic sword.
After all, if I could parry with something other than the holy sword, I still had a chance to strike.
“You’re using the same trick…!”
The Arming Sword, which was instantly accelerated by my weight.
Unable to withstand the impact between the sword and my body, it was shattered by the dark magic power of the sword.
It must have cost a lot of money for a royal weapon, but I didn’t feel like it was a waste.
It was a sacrifice for this one blow, and its value was worth an entire kingdom.
Shifting my center of gravity, I lifted myself into the air and closed in on the creature’s upper body.
The hand holding the holy sword was about to thrust swiftly in his chest.
“You think I haven’t thought of what you’re thinking, do you?”
A dense dark aura instantly gathered around the demon’s body.
I had seen Arianna use similar magic before, so his next move was somewhat predictable.
I quickly retracted the holy sword I was about to thrust and shielded my head and upper torso a bit to prepare for his next blast of darkness.
The condensed dark magic power instantly began to release the unstable energy it had gathered but the explosive force sent a small shock to my body as well.
“Khaak!”
If only there was some kind of support for my body.
My temporarily airborne body couldn’t withstand his shockwave, and I flew through the air and hit the dirt behind me.
“Alex!”
I heard Ariana’s voice call out in the distance, and I jumped to my feet.
Even if I failed to finish him off with the first blow. The battle between me and Azazel was far from over.
“Don’t come at me with such complacency, thinking you can close the distance somehow.”
“Ha, ha, ha….”
Apparently, it was a gamble to take him down in one hit.
In return, I lost my secondary weapon, the Arming Sword, which was a very costly mistake in the current battle situation.
I’m lucky I didn’t drop the holy sword.
I briefly recalled the blast he’d just unleashed and compared it to Ariana’s Dark Blast.
It was a similar impact to the magic I’d felt so often as a child and it wasn’t too hard to think of a way to counter it, the problem was, I didn’t have the tools to execute it.
If only my secondary weapon, the Arming Sword, hadn’t shattered, I could try again somehow.
He was certainly a difficult opponent to fight with just one holy sword.
“I knew you’d be looking for my weaknesses from the start. Isn’t that the way you attack, to give it your all at every turn?”
“…….”
“If I didn’t have memories of facing you in a previous life, I might be in danger.”
He was right.
The creature from my previous life was not the cautious, measured fighter he is now.
He was far more arrogant and unguarded than this.
Perhaps I became a bit complacent in my dealings with him, thinking that I was the only one with memories of the past.
At this point, he was sealed in a rift in time, so of course I should have planned for the possibility that he might have the same memories as me.
“Now it’s my turn.”
Azazel’s eyes lit up with a faint smile, and the magic sword in his hand swung once more.
The length of the weapon dwarfed the one he had just used.
“Coward, are you now trying to win by the strength of your weapon?”
“There is no cowardice in battle. There are only winners and losers.”
I know…It’s just that it’s a little unfair.
I sheathed the holy sword in my hand and prepared to parry the magic sword of over ten meters tall.
It’s hard to see his attack in the darkness.
At least I could sense the black and white solid lines slicing through space.
Even a sword this long was not lacking in speed and I realized once again the danger he posed.
I must kill him here and now.
If I let him slip away today I’ll never be able to defeat it once it has grown stronger in the future.
I’m not even sure I’ll have lifespan left in the first place.
“Where’s your momentum, you’re a cornered rat, just trying to keep up!”
It was a daunting environment to even think about surviving.
Naturally, my body began to show signs of fatigue as I continued to parry one-handedly against the huge, heavy magic sword.
It soon became a slight slowing of my reaction time, which accumulated and turned into one big gap.
“Fade away, insignificant warrior!”
Azazel’s magic sword aimed for the gaping hole, swinging with all its weight toward the center of my body.
“Ccchhhh!”
I barely managed to spin around to block the attack, but once again, the impact sent me rolling across the dirt.
“Ha, ha, ha, ha….”
Damn, damn it.
If only I had a secondary weapon.
If only I hadn’t broken the Arming Sword that had been in my hands for so long, I could have tried again to take him down.
If I had the means to defeat him, but was unprepared, I would surely lose sleep over it for some time.
Or maybe I would fall into an eternal sleep and never wake up again.
Either way, it was not a future I wanted for myself.
I scrambled to my feet and straightened up.
For now, anyway, all I had to think about was not dying
