I Was Sold to My Mortal Enemy (Double Transmigrations)

Chapter 53 - II

When Pei Xing and Xie Yu returned, they sensed that something was amiss even before entering the door. Upon opening the door and finding a group of soldiers in the yard, Shi Yi and the others in the main hall were sitting tensely, on high alert. They were on the brink of agitation until Xie Yu spoke up.

“Zhao Hong, why are you here?”

“Your Highness, something has occurred. Nanzhou has fallen. Nanzhou City was attacked and razed to the ground yesterday,” Zhao Hong reported. A collective gasp echoed as soon as he finished speaking, followed by Shi Yi’s panicked cry.

“Brother!”

Shi Yi clutched the unconscious Shi Mo, his face drained of color, while little Xiao Bao burst into tears. Aunt Hong picked up Xiao Bao and tried to comfort him.

Seeing this, the group immediately carried Shi Mo to a nearby room and quickly summoned a doctor to examine him. After the examination, the doctor concluded that Shi Mo had been greatly shaken but was not in any serious condition. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

When Shi Mo regained consciousness, his eyes appeared vacant, and he didn’t utter a word. He tightly gripped a piece of white jade in his hand. Shi Yi tried to console him, reassuring him repeatedly that Bai Jingxiao was safe and urging him not to worry.

With red eyes, Shi Mo shook his head and expressed a desire to be alone. Heartbroken, Shi Yi left him alone, standing outside the door, unwilling to leave.

Pei Xing eventually arrived, bringing him back inside. While Xie Yu left with Zhao Hong, returning to their residence.

Pei Xing embraced Shi Yi, planting a kiss on his furrowed forehead and admitting his mistakes. He had been overly busy and had not seen Shi Yi for several days. His reckless actions had led to mistreatment of Shi Yi. Although Shi Yi was still angry, his primary concern was Shi Mo’s well-being, and he paid little attention to Pei Xing.

“Bai Jingxiao became the martial arts champion at the age of sixteen. He possesses exceptional martial skills. Even though Nanzhou has fallen, he should be able to protect himself with his abilities.” Pei Xing assured, rubbing Shi Yi’s head.

“Nanzhou City was attacked and razed yesterday. If he escapes, the first thing he’ll do is seek out Shi Mo. The journey from Nanzhou City to Xiangshan County can be covered by water in three days. It would take a maximum of five days of continuous travel on horseback. We’ll wait for five days before assessing the situation.”

With no better course of action at the moment, they could only wait patiently. Their anxiety wouldn’t change the circumstances.

.

Meanwhile, Xie Yu’s situation wasn’t any easier. Nanzhou had fallen, and it was next to Zhongzhou, which could be attacked. The generals couldn’t be transferred freely, and the responsibility fell squarely on him. The transfer order had arrived. Despite Xie Yu’s reluctance, Qin Yue would lead the troops into battle.

The next day, Shi Yi anticipated that Xie Yu would lead the troops to Nanzhou, but to his surprise, it was Qin Yue who led the troops.

Upon seeing Qin Yue donned in black and gold armor, making him appeared taller and more imposing, Shi Yi smiled and patted the armor. “Brother Qin, this is the first time I’ve seen you in armor. You look so handsome.”

Qin Yue gently ruffled his head but remained silent, gazing intently at Xie Yu.

Xie Yu forced a smile and remarked, “This is the first time I’ve seen him in it too.”

Qin Yue stepped forward and embraced Xie Yu. After a long embrace, he released him and kissed Xie Yu on the forehead. “Guard Zhongzhou and wait for me. I’ll return.”

“Of course, I’ll be waiting for you to return.” Xie Yu replied, his eyes lowered to conceal his reluctance.

Qin Yue mounted his horse, casted a final profound look at Xie Yu, and rode off. The sound of the horse’s hooves felt like it was trampling on their hearts. It was a recurring pain, rendering them breathless. Xie Yu watched the receding figure, reminiscing about the little beggar he had encountered on the roadside.

Who could have imagined that the same beggar would now lead troops into battle?

“I thought you would go too.” Shi Yi observed as he gazed at them, a sense of sadness in his voice.

Xie Yu replied with a heavy tone, “I need to defend Zhongzhou.”

At that moment, Shi Yi didn’t fully grasp the gravity of these words, nor did he anticipate that Nanzhou was just the beginning.

Pei Xing’s eyes were deep as he watched the dust kicked up by the horse’s hooves, lost in thought. It wasn’t until Shi Yi called his name that he snapped out of his reverie.

.

After Qin Yue’s departure, life continued as usual.

Pei Xing and Xie Yu spent most of their time on the mountain. One night, a startling sound rang out, awakening all the villagers in Xiangshan Village. They stayed up throughout the night in a state of commotion.

Shi Yi was initially startled, but once he understood the source of the noise, he simply turned over, undressed, and went back to sleep.

As the village chief, he bore no responsibility to stay awake. It was only when Pei Xing returned from the mountain that the villagers settled down and were persuaded to return to their homes.

Once he went inside the bedroom, Pei Xing found Shi Yi sleeping on the bed, wearing oversized sleeping clothes and a flushed face.

The two large ice basins by the bedside had melted into water. After rinsing off in the bathroom and changing into clean clothes, Pei Xing emptied the two basins and refilled them with ice before joining Shi Yi on the bed.

When Shi Yi woke up and saw Pei Xing, he buried his head in his arms and mumbled, “Can you stay with me from now on?”

“Of course, let’s sleep a little longer together.”

Pei Xing lifted him into his arms, kissed him, and said, “I’ve been on the mountain for four days since Qin Yue left. Last night, we finally finished making the first batch of cannons. From now on, I can supervise from time to time instead of participating constantly.”

Xie Yu arranged for a secret shipment of the newly made firearms to Nanzhou for Qin Yue. It was that very night when the person Shi Mo had been longing for finally appeared.

Bai Jingxiao and his men appeared quite disheveled, bearing various wounds on their bodies. It was clear they had endured a fierce battle.

Shi Mo watched with tears streaming down uncontrollably, holding onto the man’s missing arm for a long time, rendered speechless.

Bai Jingxiao quickly wiped away Shi Mo’s tears and offered an apology, saying, “Mo’er, I’m sorry I’m late.”

Shi Mo clung to him, sobbing so heavily that he couldn’t find the words. The days had been filled with anxiety and waiting, each moment amplifying the desperation. Finally, now, he had reached the point where he could find peace in his heart.
