Chapter 54 - II
In addition to the victims from Nanzhou who had come to Xiangshan Village, thirty more individuals had arrived. While the village was well-off, it couldn’t accommodate too many mouths. However, they couldn’t turn these refugees away.
Pei Xing and Chu Nan made arrangements to take these newcomers to open up new land for farming, hiring them for work before the field harvests and providing three meals daily. Feeding so many people placed a strain on the available food supply, and Pei Xing and Aunt Hong couldn’t handle the cooking alone. Thankfully, Father Song and Uncle Lin stepped in to help.
Song Ning’s role as the acting county government official required him to be in his official attire at all times. To protect him, Zhou Yan had taken on the role of Song Ning’s personal bodyguard.
The hard work left Shi Yi utterly exhausted every day, but he managed to sleep soundly until dawn.
Concerned for Shi Yi, Pei Xing brought in six peasant women from the victims to help with cooking. Their workload was eased, as the women prepared meals for the refugee workers, then the women would then return to their own quarters to eat.
On a warm night, Shi Yi donned a pair of shorts and a short-sleeved shirt he had sewn, his fair feet decorated with silver bells anklets. He playfully swung his feet on the bed, creating a gentle tinkling sound.
Pei Xing, fresh from a shower, observed Shi Yi on the bed with his bare body. He approached, gently grasping Shi Yi’s ankles and gently pushing his legs apart.
Late in the night, the room was filled with the soft sound of tinkling bells, accompanied by muffled moans, harmonizing as the two lovers shared a passionate moment. Suddenly, thunder rumbled from outside. Shi Yi was startled, letting out a yelp as he instinctively clung to Pei Xing.
Pei Xing kissed him and ran his fingers through Shi Yi’s smooth back, soothing the person in his arms.
A flash of lightning streaked across the sky, followed by a deafening thunderclap that reverberated through the heavens. After a moment, a soft pattering noise began outside the house.
Shi Yi, startled by the sound, peeked out of Pei Xing’s arms. Utilizing the dim candlelight, he strained to get a glimpse of the view outside the window, but it was pitch black, and he couldn’t discern anything.
In a soft voice, he inquired, “Is it raining? Does this mean we don’t need to water the fields tomorrow?”
Pei Xing replied with a hum, and while covering Shi Yi’s mouth, they shared another intimate moment.
.
The rain continued to fall heavily for days, and on the seventh night, Song Ning and Zhou Yan unexpectedly returned to the village.
Spotting Pei Xing, Song Ning urgently spoke, “Brother Pei, several neighboring villages have been flooded. We need your help.”
As soon as Shi Yi heard the news of the flooding, he hastily dressed and joined in to assist.
Pei Xing embraced Shi Yi briefly and told him to stay home while he went to help. They shared a kiss before Pei Xing left.
Alone at home, despite his reluctance to see Pei Xing go, he knew he couldn’t provide any help. Once Pei Xing left, Shi Yi couldn’t sleep soundly and experienced an unsettling night alone. He woke early in the morning and, his heart was heavy with worry, rushed to the window to observe the pouring rain.
Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t hear the call at the door until he heard someone calling him. Shi Yi quickly opened the door and found three peasant women and an unfamiliar man standing there.
“You’ve come for rations, right? They’re still in the kitchen.” As he said this, he moved aside to let them enter. He wanted to go outside and check if Pei Xing was back, but he accidentally collided with the man. Stumbling a few steps, he nearly fell and the man quickly reached out to steady him.
Aunt Hong emerged from the room at that moment, saw the situation, and warned in a raised voice, “Little Master, please be careful not to fall. Young Master Pei would be very upset if something happened to you.”
The man, hearing Aunt Hong’s voice, quickly let go of Shi Yi, he glanced at the dazzling white neck and stepped back to follow the women.
Still trembling from his near-fall, Shi Yi patted his chest, reassuring himself that he would be more careful. He stepped outside and stood under the eaves by the door, gazing down the path in hopes of spotting Pei Xing’s return. Unfortunately, the road was empty, and there was no sign of him.
Aunt Hong observed the man following the women and inquired, “Why are there different people today?”
One of the women explained, “The older girl is sick, so we brought in someone else to help.”
Aunt Hong nodded in understanding, helping the women with their rations and seeing them off at the door. Once outside, she urged Shi Yi, “Little Master, don’t stand here in the breeze. Come inside.”
“I’m fine. I’ll stay out a bit longer. The cool breeze is refreshing.” Shi Yi stubbornly remained under the eaves.
Although he knew that if Pei Xing went to rescue people, he wouldn’t return soon, anxiety clouded his mind. Recollections of Pei Xing’s plane crash in his previous life made him very worry, despite his knowledge of Pei Xing’s competence, he couldn’t help but feel anxious.
The man following the group of women turned slightly and glanced back at the figure under the eaves. He had never seen someone as good-looking as Shi Yi in his entire life.
Listening to their conversation, he noticed that there was no man inside the house, which made him realize that the head of the household had gone out for something.
