Chapter 62 - I
Zhao Hong, dressed in armor and braving the relentless wind and snow, rode through the snowy streets of Xizhou. He reached the general’s mansion, dismounted, and hurried inside.
Inside the general’s mansion, Pei Zhengchen, in military uniform, stood before a defense map of Xizhou, his brows furrowed with an air of solemness. Recent months had seen heavy snowfall in Xizhou, causing a shortage of food and fodder. The soldiers might not survive until the next year’s harvest.
The entire Dayu Dynasty was in the grip of a century-long snowstorm, and the upcoming year was bound to be marked by famine. Thousands had frozen to death in the north, and a plague had broken out. The Beidi people seized the opportunity to raid the border of Beizhou, resulting in a loss of territory. Having conquered three cities, the Xirong people in Xizhou were ready to advance again.
Despite Zhao Hong’s desperate efforts, he could only rescue four craftsmen, leaving the rest lost at sea, including his second brother whom he had only just reunited with. A few days ago, Zhao Hong was dispatched to search for any signs of survivors at sea, but they had yet to be found.
As the sea froze, making navigation impossible, people were reassigned to supervise firearms production, and another search mission was initiated. Despite the prolonged absence, Pei Zhengchen couldn’t accept that his brother had met such a fate at sea.
Su Yuqing, dressed in a snow-white fox fur, offered him a cup of hot tea.
“Don’t worry too much. Second brother possesses exceptional abilities. His fate might have led him to some island.”
His father had once eloped from home with his mother, hiring a large ship and over a dozen servants in preparation for their journey. They unintentionally drifted to an uninhabited island and decided to settle there. They even gave it the name Wuyou Island.
For more than a decade, they led a secluded life, cut off from the outside world. When they required supplies, they would take a boat to Xizhou City for purchases. It wasn’t until his grandfather discovered them that they returned home to fulfill their filial duties.
During the years they spent in the Su Mansion, his mother endured much ridicule. His grandfather and others resented him for being a shuanger and held him in low regard. The lotus birthmark on his forehead wasn’t a vibrant red.
After giving birth to him, his mother didn’t have any more children. His grandfather and others had sinister intentions of marrying someone to his father and poisoned his mother and him.
Furious, his father returned to the island with his family. Unfortunately, he passed away within three years due to poisoning with no access to medical treatment. His mother, too, died in grief. He managed to survive under Pei Zhengchen’s care.
At this moment, Zhao Hong burst in, his figure covered in snow.
“General, it’s a success! The craftsmen have completed the bombs.”
Pei Zhengchen was taken aback and then hurriedly left the room, with Zhao Hong following closely behind. Su Yuqing shook his head and followed at a more leisurely pace.
.
Upon arriving at the designated area, they heard Shi Wu’s hearty laughter.
“This thing is incredibly powerful! It’s enough to give the Xirong people a taste of it.”
Pei Zhengchen heard his voice and playfully slapped him on the head, but he couldn’t conceal the excitement on his face. “What’s all this shouting about? Where is it?”
Shi Wu flinched, rubbed his head, and pointed at a group of people nearby.
“It’s right over there.”
Seeing Pei Zhengchen, the group of people stepped aside, revealing two baskets filled with dark, melon-sized lumps. He shook them in his hands and inquired, “What’s this? How powerful is it?”
“It can easily breach a city wall,” replied one of the craftsmen.
Pei Zhengchen cheered enthusiastically and took one for a test, ordering the explosion of a small hill on the opposite side.
When Su Yuqing arrived, a loud explosion shook the area, sending a thunderous boom through the air. He was startled, and his surroundings seemed to warp momentarily. Glancing around, he noticed a small hill in the distance visibly collapsing, accompanied by a spray of snow mist.
Snowflakes were still drifting in the air, eventually melting into water droplets that fell on the heads of the people, who seemed unaffected by the cold. Their joy at receiving a new weapon overcame the chill. With this bomb, they had found a solution to Pei Zhengchen’s concerns. The heavy snow had blocked the roads, impeding the transport of food and fodder to Xizhou City, leaving the people in a precarious situation.
“It might be better to move the supplies from Biluo Island to address this emergency.” Su Yuqing suggested.
Biluo Island was discovered accidentally by them while visiting Wuyou Island to pay homage to their parents. The island boasted vast plains and fertile land, yielding better crops compared to other places.
Pei Zhengchen explained, “The military pay for the soldiers is in jeopardy, and the imperial court may not allocate funds this year. We can’t let our soldiers suffer. We better use some of the gold we collected on Wuyou Island to pay the soldiers in advance, so as not to dampen their spirits.”
