Chapter 63 - II
Shi Yi didn’t press for details but placed his hand on Pei Xing’s broad chest to stop his actions.
“No, let’s stop. We are making too much noise, and we might be overheard.”
“I’ll be quieter, baby,” Pei Xing promised and held Shi Yi’s hand to the top of his head, kissing his soft and fair skin. “Please keep your voice down and don’t shout so loudly next time.”
Shi Yi blushed and scolded, “Isn’t it all your fault!”
Pei Xing chuckled and kissed him passionately, letting the kiss dispel the cold of midwinter.
In mild terms, it was a truly life-threatening experience. The snow continued falling steadily, and Shi Yi had to endure it until midnight.
.
The next day, Pei Zhengchen and his group cleared the snow around the peach blossom tree in the courtyard. Using an axe, they uncovered a hidden cellar entrance between two trees, and inside, they found a large box filled with gold.
Shi Yi was astounded; they had been living here for so long and never noticed it.
Realizing that they wouldn’t leave now, Pei Zhengchen didn’t press them. He might return next spring, depending on the situation in the Dayu Dynasty and the possibility of receiving their military pay next year.
With the group carrying a large box of gold, they decided to leave the island when the snow began to lighten. Shi Yi especially put his hands in front of the fireplace, and Pei Zhengchen reclaimed the golds he had gathered over the past few days.
Shi Wu was a bit disappointed to learn that his third brother wouldn’t be leaving the island. Shi Yi patted his back to console him, saying, “When the weather warms up, your third brother will leave the island again. For now, let me stay first. I’m afraid I’ll turn into an ice cube before we reach the shore.”
Shi Wu observed his third brother’s thin frame and saw that his lips were still blue from the cold. He felt a twinge of sympathy and patted Shi Yi’s thin shoulders, offering a kind suggestion, “Third brother, you’re quite slender. When we return to Xizhou City next year, I’ll help you get in better shape.”
Shi Yi, bemused, replied, “No need, silly brother.”
.
The group of people came and went in haste. When the snow became lighter, they all left with a box of gold, and the island returned to its peaceful state.
The two of them waited until the figures were no longer visible. Pei Xing held Shi Yi in his arms, rubbing the slender and soft waist.
“Indeed, you’re too thin. We need to work on that.”
Before Shi Yi could fully grasp his meant, he was pushed onto the bed. In an instant, all his clothes were removed, and he was nestled into the bed. There was a large cloth bag filled with heated gravel inside the bed, providing a constant source of warmth and dispelling the cold.
Pei Xing, unbothered by the cold, also removed all his clothes and joined Shi Yi in the bed. He covered the young shuanger without warning and kissed his red lips.
“Baby, no one is disturbing us now. You can relax more this time. You don’t have to hold back. Feel free to let out your voice.”
Upon hearing this, Shi Yi’s face turned red, and he called Pei Xing a shameless rascal. He reached out to grab his waist firmly.
Pei Xing nibbled Shi Yi’s red lips, pried open his clenched jaws, took hold of the hands around his waist, pushed them above his head, and parted his fair legs with his knees.
Shi Yi was unable to make much sound, only emitting soft, throaty sounds as he raised his head.
Pei Xing didn’t want to be too forceful, fearing it might be too much for Shi Yi’s delicate frame, so he restrained himself.
.
While Pei Xing and Shi Yi were engrossed in intimacy, Zhou Yan and Song Ning were exceptionally busy.
Normally situated in Zhongzhou with a geographical advantage, they were safe from natural and man-made disasters. However, this year’s unprecedented ice and snow had led to a group of disaster victims fleeing from the north.
Ever since an incident of harboring spies when providing shelter to disaster victims previously, Song Ning didn’t take this situation lightly. Yet, as an official, he couldn’t abandon these destitute disaster victims.
So, they had to clear a piece of land and quickly construct a dozen sheds to provide shelter from the winter for these victims. They also gathered rice and noodles from nearby villages for them to eat and drink. However, maintaining hundreds of non-productive individuals for an extended period was not a sustainable solution.
They had to seek approval from higher authorities and find a way to resettle the victims. After the higher authorities granted their approval, they initiated household registration checks. Those with proper household registrations were distributed among several surrounding villages.
For those without household registration certificates, they were considered refugees and kept under strict supervision until the disaster subsided next year, at which point they would be sent back home.
Song Ning assumed that this would be the end of the situation, but unexpectedly, a plague erupted among the victims who had been dispersed to various villages. They gathered the victims once more and sent doctors to investigate in each village.
Zhou Yan was furious and felt like beheading those infected with the plague.
They had confirmed that none of them had fled from a plague-stricken area when the household registration checks were performed.
However, just a few days after the distribution, the plague outbreak caught them off guard. They apprehended some victims for questioning, but before any confessions could be extracted, they had already identified the source of the outbreak. These victims had passed through an abandoned village while escaping.
Starving, they had entered the village to scavenge for food. Later, they learned that the entire village had been executed due to a plague outbreak.
Terrified, they didn’t dare disclose this to anyone. When they were subsequently infected while on route to find a place to stay, the others panicked. Desperate to survive, they worked together to kill those who were infected, ultimately burning the corpses.
