Chapter 8: The false hero 2
I leapt out of the window, landing gracefully on a nearby rooftop. The city lights painted the skyline in shades of neon and shadow, giving me a perfect view of the chaos below. Sirens echoed in the distance, and the air was thick with the tension of a world constantly on edge.
"Alright, System," I muttered. "Let's test this out."
I activated [Observe] and focused on a man loitering suspiciously near a corner store below. His hands twitched nervously, and his eyes darted around.
Name: Marcus Reynolds
Quirk: Firestarter
Description: Generates and controls small flames. Limited to hand proximity. Low stamina usage but weak overall output.
Threat Level: D-
"Firestarter, huh?" I murmured. "Doesn't sound too dangerous, but let's not underestimate him."
Pulling on my Dark Mask and securing my Dark Outfit, I climbed down the building, keeping to the shadows. My heart raced—this was my first real fight in this world.
As I got closer, Marcus lit a cigarette with his fingertip, confirming the description. He exhaled a plume of smoke and muttered to himself.
"Stupid boss... always makin' me do the dirty work. Can't even trust his own damn crew."
Before he could take another puff, I stepped into the faint glow of the streetlight, letting the shadows of my outfit emphasize my arrival.
"Marcus Reynolds," I called out, my voice low and calm. "You've got two choices: give up or get your ass handed to you."
He spun around, startled, his hand igniting instinctively. "Who the hell are you supposed to be? Some wannabe hero?"
I didn't answer. Instead, I activated [Instant Fear]. His eyes widened as an invisible weight of dread crashed down on him. He stumbled back, his flame flickering weakly.
"W-What the...?" he stammered, his bravado cracking.
I lunged forward, faster than he'd anticipated, thanks to [Basic Agility Boost]. My fist connected with his gut, and he doubled over, dropping the cigarette.
"Lesson one," I said, grabbing him by the collar. "If you're gonna pick a fight, make sure you're ready to lose (I ignored how hypocritical my statement was)."
He tried to summon a flame, but I smacked his wrist away and threw him against the wall. His head hit the brick with a dull thud, and he crumpled to the ground.
Quest Progress: Defeat 10 criminals (1/10)
"One down," I muttered, stepping over his unconscious body.
As I moved deeper into the city, [Observe] became my go-to tool. It was invaluable, revealing the quirks and potential threats of everyone I encountered. Some quirks were mundane like a cashier whose quirk made her hair glow but others were more dangerous.
I found myself in an alley, watching a mugging in progress. Two thugs were cornering a woman, one of them wielding a knife.
Name: Jackson Cole
Quirk: Shred
Description: Can generate sharp claws on both hands. Effective in close combat. Limited durability.
Threat Level: D
Name: Travis Blake
Quirk: Thick Skin
Description: Skin becomes resistant to cuts and impacts. Vulnerable to internal damage.
Threat Level: D+
"Two at once," I mused. "This'll be fun."
Pulling my hood lower, I stepped into the alley. "Hey, gentlemen," I called out. "Mind letting her go? Or do I need to make you?"
They turned to face me, both smirking.
"Who's this clown?" Jackson sneered, extending his claw-like fingers.
Travis cracked his knuckles. "Doesn't matter. He won't be walking out of here."
The woman took the distraction as her chance to flee, sprinting past me with a whispered "thank you."
"You're welcome," I said, rolling my shoulders. "Now, where were we?"
Jackson lunged first, his claws aiming for my chest. I sidestepped, catching his wrist mid-swipe, and delivered a sharp knee to his stomach. He wheezed, doubling over, but I didn't stop.
With a quick twist, I sent him flying into a pile of trash bags, temporarily incapacitating him.
Travis was next. His punches were slower but packed a lot more force. I ducked under his swing and aimed a kick at his knee. He barely flinched, his quirk absorbing most of the impact.
"Alright," I muttered. "Time for a different approach."
Using [Instant Fear], I watched his expression shift. He hesitated, his confidence faltering just enough for me to exploit. I jumped, planting a solid kick to his face. The force sent him stumbling back, blood dripping from his nose.
Quest Progress:
Defeat 10 criminals (3/10)
As both thugs lay groaning on the ground, I straightened my mask and dusted off my outfit.
"This is easier than I thought," I said, stepping out of the alley.
-later-
The night was almost over, and my Quest Progress showed nine out of ten criminals down. The last fight had pushed me further than expected a thug with a combustion-based quirk had singed my jacket and nearly my skin before I took him out.
My body was still healing from minor burns, thanks to [Regeneration], but I was tired.
"This last one better be worth it," I muttered.
As if on cue, I heard shouting from a nearby warehouse. Peeking through a broken window, I spotted a large man in the center of the room. He was flanked by several unconscious guards, their bodies slumped against the walls like discarded toys.
I activated [Observe].
Name: Dominic Kane
Quirk: Titanium Muscle
Description: Muscles harden to the density of titanium, granting immense strength and defense. High stamina cost.
Threat Level: B-
"Finally, a challenge," I whispered.
Slipping into the warehouse, I moved silently along the shadows. Dominic was pacing, muttering something about "failed deals" and "the IRS getting on his ass."
I stepped into the light, making no effort to hide my presence.
"Dominic Kane," I said. "You're my tenth."
He stopped mid-stride and turned to face me. "Who the hell are you supposed to be?"
I tilted my head, letting the shadows of my mask emphasize my expression. "Your reckoning."
Dominic snorted, flexing his massive arms. "You think you can take me on, little guy? I'll crush you like a bug."
"Let's see you try," I said, activating [Lycanthropy King].
A surge of power coursed through me as my senses heightened and my body shifted. My nails lengthened into claws, and my canines sharpened into fangs. My muscles bulged slightly, and a faint aura of primal energy surrounded me.
Dominic's cocky grin faltered. "What the hell are you?"
I didn't answer. Instead, I lunged forward with inhuman speed, slashing at his side. My claws met resistance but still left shallow cuts on his titanium-like skin.
Dominic roared, swinging a massive fist at me. I dodged easily, my enhanced reflexes making it feel like he was moving in slow motion.
"Too slow," I taunted, slashing at his arm.
This time, my claws dug deeper, and Dominic grunted in pain. His swings became more erratic, and I used his frustration to my advantage, darting around him and striking at weak points his joints, his ribs, his neck.
But Dominic wasn't going down easily. He caught me off guard with a backhanded strike, sending me flying into a stack of crates. The impact knocked the wind out of me, and I coughed as I staggered to my feet.
"Not bad," I said, wiping blood from my mouth. "But not good enough."
Dominic charged, but I was ready. I activated [Instant Fear], watching as hesitation flickered in his eyes. He slowed just enough for me to dodge his tackle and leap onto his back.
With a feral growl, I drove my claws into his shoulders and sank my fangs into his neck.
Dominic screamed, thrashing wildly, but I held on, my enhanced strength keeping me locked in place. My claws tore into his flesh, bypassing his quirk's defenses, and my teeth left deep marks.
Finally, Dominic collapsed to his knees, his strength drained. I jumped off him and stood over his trembling form.
"Guess you're not as tough as you thought," I said, watching him slump to the ground unconscious.
Quest Completed: Defeat 10 criminals (10/10)
Reward: New Class Skills Unlocked
A surge of information flooded my mind as the system granted me new abilities. My vision briefly flickered with darkness, and when it cleared, I felt... different. Stronger.
New Skills Gained
[Shadow Walk] (Active)
Allows the user to merge with shadows, becoming undetectable for a limited time. Duration: 10 seconds. Cooldown: 1 minute.
[Aura of Dread] (Passive)
Nearby enemies feel an oppressive aura that lowers their combat efficiency and makes them more likely to flee or surrender.
[Darkness Manipulation] (Rank F)
Beginner-level control over shadows. Can create small constructs or extend shadows for utility and minor combat applications.
The effects were immediate. As I stood in the warehouse, the shadows around me seemed to respond to my presence, curling and shifting unnaturally. I reached out instinctively, and a tendril of darkness extended from the floor, twisting around my hand before dissipating.
"This... is awesome," I whispered, flexing my fingers.
The system chimed in with another notification.
[Dark Hero - Apprentice] Skill Progression: Your actions align with your class. Skills may evolve or rank up with continued use.
I exited the warehouse, testing [Shadow Walk] by stepping into a patch of darkness cast by a nearby lamppost. My body melted into the shadow, becoming one with the darkness. I moved effortlessly, unseen and unheard, reappearing a few steps away as the ability ended.
"Perfect for sneaking up on people," I mused.
The faint glow of the rising sun reminded me that my work wasn't over. The city might be waking up, but for someone like me, the real work was just beginning.
-later-
When he got home, he simply got himself something to eat and decided to do some research before it was time for him to go to school.
Unfortunately, the background he was given in this world. He was still a 14-year-old kid living alone as orphan, as much as he just wanted to dip, he couldn't simply because he also wanted to apply eventually to UA high school after he finish this year.
That was his current goal right now.
For now, he decided to do some research, as he was researching, he discovered something very interesting. Despite this world being a mixture of DC and mhq he couldn't find anything on Superman and other similar heroes the only DC heroes he found on was Batman and his robins including some information about the island of Amazon more like rumors than anything else.
It was essentially the equivalent of people saying that the pyramids were made by aliens in his previous world.
Just a conspiracy theory, but being a reincarnated he knew better.
But for now he let it be something else he found interesting was that a certain clown got executed during the 90s.
Apparently, the Joker pissed too many people off, so the federal government decided to get him and they gave him the death penalty the video of his execution was still available online unfortunately with that there were no Harley Quinn.
As he continued his research, another set of heroes caught his attention: the Incredibles. They were real, active, and had been operating as a family team since the early 2000s. What really caught his eye was something else entirely.
While scrolling through social media, he stumbled upon the verified Instagram account of none other than Helen Parr better known as Elastigirl.
He managed to find her Instagram page most of her posts were really normal that was until he found a certain picture in her Instagram.
"Wow," he said under his breath, stopping at a photo of her in a casual skin tight outfit, showing off her figure her ass cheeks shown in great detail by outfit she was wearing.
Manjiro shook his head, trying to focus. "Stay focused, you idiot. You've got bigger things to worry about."
Still, he couldn't help but bookmark the page for… future research purposes.
He decided that was enough as he grabbed his stuff preparing to go to class.
