John Bellew
My name is John Bellew. I am twenty-five years old. I live in the town of Yorkshire and work for a mafia organisation called Passione. A couple of people once asked me, 'What's it like working for such a well-known criminal organisation? Do they pay you a lot? Does it suit you?' Well, to tell you the truth, that's a bit of a moot point. The thing is, I'm a member of the Elimination Squad. Our squad does all kinds of work. And when I say different, I mean that we perform various murders of people undesirable to the organisation, and in principle, we do the dirtiest work that some other bandit, mercenary or even Hunter might not take on. In general, in terms of eliminating and doing dirty work, we are real professionals. That's what we were created for. And it would seem that people like us should get paid enough... but it only seems that way. Our reputation in the organisation... is far from the best. Although we're partly a bit guilty of that ourselves. So, because of this bad reputation, we are not trusted to do anything other than the things I mentioned, and we are also underpaid. Yes, our wages, of course... so-so. But it's more or less enough to live on. And the main thing is that we have to make do with what we have, because the way I and my other comrades lived before... it was more like survival. It's shit, not life.
Anyway, I don't need to go into it too much. Things are more or less normal now and I have enough for food, clothes and shelter.
Just about ten minutes ago, I completed a mission to take out a drug dealer who thought he could trade in our territory. That's because Passione doesn't deal drugs, and doing something that Passione doesn't do, and without permission from above, is a real impudence. And let's not forget that the whole city is our territory. Anyway, I rewarded this dealer for his insolence with a painful death, and more specifically, I turned his intestines into a bloody mess. That's not a fate one would wish on anyone. I didn't get bloody, of course, but I did get the usual mud on my way out of the alley where I'd done my business.
For the moment I'm going to the café nearby, because I haven't eaten much since this morning, and now I'm hungry. Some people might be shocked that I'm going to a cafe after what I've done recently, but the thing is, I've been through so much shit like this in my life, and often worse, that I don't really care. On the plus side, I'm not very impressionable myself, and my stomach is strong.
After a few dozen more steps, I turn the corner and finally come to the very same cafe. I don't really have to go here very often, because the eateries I usually go to are in a slightly different part of town, but now I'm so hungry that I'm too lazy to walk to my usual place. And besides, next to this cafe there is a shop of musical instruments, which means that somewhere nearby there may be a musician I know, whom I dislike, to put it mildly. But what can I do: hunger is stronger than caution.
I walk up to the cafe, pulling the door handle, step inside and... I see what I feared most. Even though I'd allowed for the possibility, I still came here. It was the last thing I wanted to do, but it happened.
A few metres away from me, behind the counter sits a man whose very sight gives me a fit of rage. His name is Christopher Bellamy. He's the leader of the Specialisation Squad. The squad that doesn't like us - the Elimination Squad - and we don't like them. The last thing any of us want is to meet any of them, cos then there's no problem getting into a fight. It's like playing with fire over a powder keg. And I think they're thinking the same thing. That's the kind of mutual enmity we have.
Bloody Bellamy! How lucky I am to bump into him in a place like this.
He's staring right at me with a look of anger that also has a touch of mockery in it. I think he's doing it on purpose. He wants to provoke me. Because as far as I know, Bellamy dislikes us the most out of the Specialisation Squad. I don't know why, but he does. And I, in turn, dislike him, even though there are worse people out there.
All right, all right, we need to calm down. You can't have a fight in a place like this. It's not because innocent people might get hurt - I don't really care about them; it's because if the bosses find out about it, I and the whole squad will be in trouble, and we already have a bad reputation, and I don't want to spoil it even more.
I've got to hold it together. I just came here to eat, not to fight. Besides, Bellamy's just turned the other way and seems to be calming down, so I'll just walk past, sit down at a table and order a meal.
Quickly, but at the same time carefully and tensely I headed for a table that was almost in the middle of the café, which required me to pass Bellamy, and the ones closest to me were occupied by those few customers. So I'd have to go past Bellamy anyway. What the fuck is wrong with that?
And so, being careful, I passed him and was about to relax a little, when suddenly he spoke.
- I didn't know dogs went to the cafe. How did they even let them in here? The place stinks.
What a bastard, Bellamy, trying to provoke me. Did he do it on purpose? Not for himself, not for the people?
- Bellamy, why the fuck are you fucking with me? What the fuck do you want to do? Give me a proper meal.
- So why don't you eat in a rubbish tip? You're used to this kind of food and you're scaring people away with your filthy appearance. You got no business here, Bellew. Get the hell out of here.
What a restless piece of shit! Does he think he can provoke me into a fight in a place like this and win? What kind of idiot is he? Who the hell does he think he is?! Does he think he can tell me where to eat?! You arrogant bastard Bellamy, but I can still hold my temper.
- What you say to me is nothing more than an empty fart. I'll leave when I want to leave. And you're the one who should be the one who should fuck off.
You think too much of yourself, Bellamy. You think because you and your squad have more privileges, more pay and a better life than us, that gives you the right to talk to me like that? No, Bellamy, you and your posse are just bitches to the boss.
- Bellew, you better know your place. At this rate, you're going to go even further down the drain. You've got a reputation as chain dogs, and you want to take it even further. You'd better sit tight and stay put. After a while of compliant behaviour, they'll finally start to cut you some slack. What am I talking about? For a dog like you, even that's a perfectly acceptable life.
- But I'd rather be chain dogs than little bitches like you. And when I say bitches, I don't just mean animals, Bellamy.
Heh, I guess my words did hit him after all. He jumped up from his chair and stood in front of me, and I, in turn, had already prepared myself for a fight. I didn't want to fight in a place like this, but you gave me no choice.
So, Bellamy, are you going to attack first, or are you going to give me the opportunity? In this situation, if I go first, it means I'm the one who started the fight and you're just defending yourself. That's what you're likely to tell your superiors if they ask about it. But what if you die and can't tell them? Didn't you think of that? You arrogant prick. I'll kill you and no-one will know what really happened here.
You must be waiting for me to attack. You think I'm going to reach for some projectile, like cutlery or something on the tables, and start throwing it at you. But you're wrong. I am quite prudent, and for just such an occasion I have brought with me some iron balls from under the bearings, which I hide in my sleeve. Are you expecting this? Now we're going to find out!
I launched the projectiles I held between my fingers at Bellamy, but judging by the fact that he was able to dodge them without much trouble, he was expecting something like this. He immediately jumped behind the counter, and my balls started ricocheting off various surfaces around the café. I can't really control them from a distance, so with Nen's residual energy, they can ricochet about twice and still be pretty lame on accuracy.
That's okay, they may not get it, but I have a few more for the exact same throw.
I pull out my marbles again and launch them at Bellamy, but he dodges again, though this time it was close. This is me just warming up for now though, so there's more to come.
And this is where I let my guard down for a moment and Bellamy took advantage of it, materialising his stand, which I managed to see in the last moment using Gyo, but it was too late. He struck the strings of his guitar, after which my entire body was pierced by a powerful sound wave, after which not only was I thrown backwards, but my ears were now ringing wildly.
- All right, girls, time to rock this shithole!
Bellew then strummed his guitar again, but this time I managed to cover my ears and protect Nen's body a little. It hurts, but it's something I have no problem with.
I won't let you, Bellamy, attack again! It was my turn.
Without a second's hesitation, I attacked again. Since I was out of metal balls, I had to throw whatever I could get my hands on, like cutlery. You can't let him breathe.
What, Bellamy, the velocity of my projectiles is amazing, isn't it? I don't put much force into it, and the projectiles still fly at crazy speeds. With my ability, I can barely move my arms and still throw with the same speed and force. Whatever I touch, as soon as I do, it immediately falls under my control.
To set it in motion, to stop it, to slow it down and speed it up. Simply put, I control kinetic energy. That's what my ability is. I can do this with any object, but only in direct contact. And some objects that are initially stationary, like knives or marbles, have to be set in motion first. At least a little bit, with the smallest movement, but it is necessary. And then I can control the movable objects as I wish.
Bellamy, you're a stand user and I'm just a Nen user, but that doesn't make me weaker than you. It all depends on who realises their ability and how, and believe me... you have no idea how I can use my power. That doesn't change the fact that you have to be careful.
Now he already tried to attack me with a concentrated sound wave, but I was able to dodge it, and the second time too. I then grabbed several knives from a nearby table and, pushing each of them lightly, began spinning them at tremendous speeds. I threw the knives at him, and this time he couldn't dodge successfully. A couple of them left cuts, but one hit him in the side.
This is my chance!
Taking advantage of his momentary disorientation, I threw myself into the attack. He tries to attack me again with a concentrated sound wave, but it's all to no avail! I do a roll up and pushing myself off the floor, kicked him in the chin with my feet. Bellamy collapses to the floor and passes out.
That's it, I've won. To be honest, I can't really believe I did it. I've just defeated the leader of the Specialisation Squad! Although I had a feeling something like this was coming.
It's a chance not to be missed. Well, Bellamy, you fought well, and you weren't the worst man, so I'm going to kill you quickly and painlessly. Die!
I was already swinging for the final blow when suddenly I was hit in the head from somewhere in the back by a powerful blow that sent me flying sideways and broke the table.
That hurt! What the hell was that?!
When I looked up, I saw some ashy-haired kid who looked to be sixteen years old jumping at me. He was going to finish me off with a punch to the chest.
Who's this kid? Had he been here the whole time? Now, that's me being inattentive. But why the hell did he attack me? Is he an ally of Bellamy's? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone like that in the Specialisation Squad. But he attacked me and he's going to finish me off, so he should be ready to die himself!
I instantly dodged his attack and immediately jumped to my feet, giving him a kick to the stomach that sent him flying backwards but he was still on his feet.
Well, kid, you're not as easy as you look, but you're not quite Bellamy's level. I'm going to get a little more serious and show you something that I hope will make you change your mind about fighting and run away. I don't really want to kill a young guy like you.
I take off my windbreaker, and I materialise chainsaw teeth on my hands. They move through my hands and cut like a real chainsaw, and I can control their speed. They can move in such a way as to torture their victim, slowly tearing their flesh, or they can finish them off instantly at breakneck speed.
The kid was a little surprised by this, but he still has no intention of backing down. Well, in that case, I'll show you the difference between us!
I attacked and tried to hit him, but he dodged and tried to hit me back. We exchanged blows in an attempt to hit each other, and then I let my guard down for a moment and he hit me. And to my surprise, his blow was much more painful than I had imagined. It was like being struck by lightning! I went down on one knee.
So that's his Nen ability. Not bad, but... it's still not enough!
I managed to grab a nearby mug and threw it at the kid, causing his nose to bleed and a bit of disorientation. I decided to take advantage of this and attacked in such a way as to chop his head off. The kid still managed to defend himself against it by putting his shoulder under the blow. How reckless. My teeth didn't move very fast, so they painfully tore through the flesh of this guy, who screamed.
To my slight surprise, he had enough willpower to pull himself together and strike me. He struck again with that lightning-charged attack, and even more painful than last time! Damn brat, I'm sick of that attack! I kicked him in the stomach again, throwing him out into the street.
Eh, kid-boy... you have no idea who you're messing with. I'm just playing with you now. I can cut you down at any time with a single attack. Horizontally or vertically. And I can do it so fast, you won't even realise what's happened. Like I said before, you're not even close to Bellamy.
Well... let's see what else you can do.
I went outside and immediately attacked the guy. We started exchanging blows again, but this time I decided to spare him a little and just threw a few punches with my fists and foot, knocking him backwards. Next, I jumped into the air and tried to cut him in half, but he quickly grabbed a nearby hatchling and blocked my blow.
What a desperate attempt. My teeth can cut through even something like that with no problem and won't be damaged in the slightest. You're still alive because I want you to be. Let's pick up the speed a little.
The hatch was about to be cut, but suddenly the kid slid forward a little and kicked me in the chin, sending me flying a little bit.
Damn, this kid's starting to surprise me. So desperately clinging to life... and quite successfully. Maybe he'll show me something else.
I was about to move on him again, but suddenly a voice came from outside that belonged to Bellamy.
- All right, fools, you ready to hear some real rock?
Bellamy... I've been playing with this guy so much that I completely lost my guard and forgot about Bellamy. Me and the guy are battling it out on the street right now, and next to us... next to us is a music equipment shop. And another ability of Bellamy's booth is to attack with sound waves through sound conductors, like speakers. And now.
- Oh, shit!
I covered my ears at the last moment, so much so that I almost tore my own eardrums. And then it happened... my whole body was pierced by a powerful sound wave that threw me and the guy into a building nearby.
Damn...that hurt!
My hearing was still intact, but it felt like my entire skeleton was cracking.
Damn... this is a huge mistake. I got so caught up in the fight that I forgot about it, and it cost me dearly. If I was able to take out the two of them before, I'm not sure I could do it even if I fought seriously. So much for underestimating your opponent.
No, it's too risky to continue fighting. I have to run, which I actually did, quickly getting to my feet and dashing away into the nearest alley. I just hope Bellamy doesn't decide to chase me.
Run-run-run-run! Don't stop and don't turn round. Shit... my body hurts! I underestimated him...Bellamy....
I'm still in the half-lit alleyway and apparently no one is going to chase me.
With a sigh of relief, I relaxed and leaned against the wall as a voice came from not too far away from me.
- What people! It's a bit unexpected to meet you in a place like this.
That voice... I leisurely, and with a bit of fear, raise my head and see him... the one I wanted to see the least in this situation. That bloody one-eyed blond guy! How...? How did he manage to show up here right now... at this moment and in this place....?
- I've just seen the mayhem in the street nearby. I think you're in on it, Bellew. Did you get in a fight with someone from Special Forces again?
- It-- I-- it was him! He provoked me! He started it! He--
- Belleu-Belleu-Belleu-Belleu... don't give me any of those excuses. You disappoint me. And you're setting your squad up like this. That's not nice.
- I--
- You and your mates should be punished for this, but I'll give you a chance. You owe me a proper apology right now.
That bastard! Fine with me, but why bring my comrades into it? It's solely my fault and the punishment should be for me, but he... I would have fought him with pleasure, but I'm not in the right state of mind right now. I must apologise.
- I apologise. I've done wrong and I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart.
- Belleu-Belleu-Belleu-Belleu... have you forgotten who you're standing in front of? Is that any way to treat a superior officer? Apologise properly. This is your last warning.
Fucking piece of shit! I hate you so much! But I have to do this... this is the situation.
Through the pain throughout my body, I kneel on one knee and, head down, I apologise again.
- I ask for your forgiveness with all my heart. The blame for what happened on the street is entirely mine. I am prepared to accept any punishment. I beg you... to be magnanimous. I...I...I...I rely on your kindness and generosity...First Lieutenant Passione, Kurapika Kuruta.
