The sunlight was a bit harsh. Remy Lebeau squinted his eyes and instinctively pressed down on the brim of his hat.
"Phew!"
He exhaled a cloud of blue smoke, glancing at the collapsed buildings in the distance as he muttered, "The noise those two made is almost too much."
Shaking his head, he looked at his watch, put his hat back on, and laid down on the coast.
Moments later, he heard footsteps. He lazily picked up his hat and looked at the approaching Mike and the others, saying, "You're late, but luckily I'm a patient guy. I waited a bit longer for you."
Mike scowled. "Before I smash that handsome face of yours, get down from that rock."
Remy blinked in surprise before breaking into a cheerful laugh. "Haha, I love the way you talk."
Leaping off the rock, he looked at the two of them seriously. "So, what's the status?"
Logan replied, "We got the person out."
"And then?"
Mike added, "Strick's dead. I killed him myself."
"Nice, perfect!"
Remy snapped his fingers, grinning. "Let's go, guys! The military's coming soon."
Mike nodded and followed.
I wonder how that little guy, Clark, is doing…
Logan watched the two walk away, then glanced at the spot where he had parted ways with Kara.
He wasn't sure how to face her. In fact, he was starting to question whether he truly loved Kara, or if he could ever love her the same way again, as if nothing had happened.
Love built on lies… maybe it's best to just end it here.
He had always been alone. Maybe this was the best outcome after all.
Logan chuckled softly and shook his head, following the others.
Not long after the three left, Kara rushed over anxiously. Seeing no one, she collapsed to the ground, her hands clutching her face as she sobbed.
"Logan…"
Tears streaming down her face, she gazed at the vast ocean, softly murmuring Logan's name, her heart twisting with pain.
"I'm sorry, Logan. I'm so sorry…"
After a while, she wiped away her tears and stood up, walking aimlessly toward the island's harbor.
"Oh? Here's another collectible?"
A voice full of surprise echoed, and Kara turned around in fear. She saw Mr. Dread descending slowly and immediately turned to run.
"Heh!"
Mr. Dread sneered coldly and stretched out his hand toward Kara. An invisible force lifted her off the ground and pulled her to him. After sizing her up, he smiled and said, "Silver Fox? Not as impressive as your sister, but still a decent addition to my collection."
"Don't struggle," Mr. Dread said, gripping Kara's chin. "Sweetheart, you wouldn't want me to leave empty-handed, would you?"
As Kara looked at him in terror, he slapped her hard, knocking her unconscious, and then turned to fly toward the laboratory.
There, hidden by Strick, was an excellent collectible, number 001, waiting for him. That was his true purpose for returning.
He remembered from the file photos that the child had beautiful heterochromatic eyes.
…
In a secret location at the Hellfire Club in Las Vegas, the mutants who had escaped from Three Mile Island were celebrating their newfound freedom. But Emma sat alone in a corner.
"Sister, please come back safely…"
She whispered to herself, her face filled with worry.
"Emma?"
A young man with an eye patch walked up to Emma.
"Scott."
Emma nodded at him, still looking deeply concerned.
"Don't worry. Your sister will be back."
Scott sat down beside Emma, feeling for a place to settle. "What's your plan?"
"Plan?" Emma gazed around, her eyes vacant. "I just want to wait for my sister to return."
Her parents were gone, and her sister was all she had left.
"I understand," Scott murmured softly, crossing his arms in front of him with a wry smile. "To be honest, I have no idea where to go next or what to do."
His life had been shattered by Strick. Even if he tried to pretend like nothing had happened, after this, the government wouldn't let him off the hook.
At that moment, the figures of the Red Devil and Black King quietly appeared.
The once noisy hall instantly fell silent.
Black King looked on with satisfaction as he slowly walked to the front of the crowd. Turning around to face everyone, he spoke loudly when all eyes were on him: "My dear comrades! You are free!"
The room fell silent for a moment, but after a few seconds, the crowd couldn't help but erupt in cheers.
Black King raised his hands, calming the crowd. Once the noise died down, he smiled and said, "I am Sebastian Shaw, the leader of the Hellfire Club!"
"Our Hellfire Club was founded to save our comrades. From its inception until today, we have fought for our freedom and for the rights we deserve!"
"We need to rally every one of our comrades' strength!"
"Now, it's time for you to make a choice!"
He paused, noticing that no one moved. He continued, "Don't worry, I won't force anyone. Joining is voluntary. Even if you don't join us, I will understand."
"Those who wish to join can stay. The doors are open to anyone who wants to leave. You can walk out with your heads held high!"
The crowd looked around at each other.
"I'll stay!"
A mutant covered in scales stepped forward and stood before Black King.
Black King smiled slightly, looking at the others.
"I'll stay too."
"I want to go home."
"My ability is too weak, I don't want to hold you all back."
One by one, the crowd made their decisions.
After a while, half of the people in the hall had left.
Black King casually asked, "Is there anyone else who wants to leave?"
He scanned the room, and seeing that no one else was making a move to leave, he nodded. "From today, you are all members of the Hellfire Club."
"Now, please introduce yourselves and demonstrate your abilities so we can get to know each other better."
Everyone complied, showing off their powers, which were as varied as they were strange.
Though Black King continued to smile, he couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed inside.
These powers were all too ordinary.
Scott stepped forward, hesitating. "Here? I can't control my power."
"It's okay," Black King smiled, offering encouragement, though he wasn't very hopeful. "Show me."
Scott nodded, took off his eyepatch, and slowly lifted his head, opening his eyes.
"Boom!"
Two beams of red energy shot out of Scott's eyes, piercing the ceiling and blasting through to the sky above.
Scott quickly shut his eyes. "Sorry!"
"Hahaha!" Black King couldn't help but laugh, his eyes lighting up. "No need to apologize! It's exactly what I asked you to do!"
This power... it's incredible!
Black King turned to look at Emma.
Emma pressed her lips together, and her body transformed into diamond.
Black King's eyes narrowed, stunned.
Such a power was magnificent, but compared to Scott's, it still fell short.
The next moment, Emma deactivated her ability and looked at Black King.
Just as Black King was about to speak, Emma's voice rang in his mind.
Black King froze for a moment, his composure completely gone. He exclaimed, "Dual abilities!"
