Saturday, Mike's house, Charles' room.
Mike sat at the edge of the bed while Charles stood before him, staring down at his toes.
Outside the room, Eric and Clark watched the door nervously.
"Charles, do you know what privacy means?"
Silence…
"It's a personal space that has nothing to do with you! Spying on someone's privacy like that—how is it any different from stealing?"
"I'm not a thief. I… I was just curious."
Charles' fingers fidgeted and tangled with each other as his voice grew quieter and quieter.
"Think about it. How would you feel if someone discovered your secrets?"
"I… I wouldn't tell anyone!"
Charles was visibly tense. It was the first time he had seen Mike scold him so harshly.
"It's not about telling or not telling. It's about the fact that you shouldn't have done it in the first place!"
Charles began to sob. "I understand. I won't do it again."
Mike's stern expression softened. "You haven't fully mastered your abilities yet. If you're not careful, you could hurt someone."
"I'm sorry, Dad," Charles said, tears streaming down his face. "I won't do it again."
Mike extended his hand toward Charles, who immediately dove into his arms, sobbing quietly.
Suddenly, a pained look flashed across Charles' face.
Overwhelmed by his emotions, his barely controlled abilities began to spiral out of control.
Mike frowned, comforting Charles, but he quickly sensed something foreign entering his mind.
"Charles?"
Holding Charles tightly, Mike called his name gently.
But then…
Charles pushed Mike away abruptly, his face contorted with pain and panic. "Who is that woman? Is she our mom?"
Mike's frown deepened. "Control your abilities!"
He wasn't sure how much more of his mind Charles would read.
"No!"
Charles shouted, staring intently at Mike, digging deeper into his memories.
It was the first time Charles had seen anything about his mother.
Mike pulled out a card, ready to use it, but Charles yelled, "Dad, don't! I just want to see her face!"
Mike's fingers trembled slightly before he sighed and put the card away.
A few seconds later, Charles finished delving into the memories of his origins. The shock, combined with his lack of control, caused him to pass out.
Mike looked at him with a mix of exasperation and helplessness.
It's better this way, Mike thought. Dealing with him conscious would've been more troublesome.
Laying Charles on the bed, Mike left the room. Outside, he was met with two pairs of nervous eyes. He sighed and said, "His abilities went out of control. He's passed out for now."
Clark and Eric breathed a sigh of relief.
"As long as he's just unconscious, it's not too bad," Clark said.
Waving a hand dismissively, Mike added, "Keep an eye on him. I'm heading downstairs."
From the looks of it, Charles had likely uncovered the truth about his origins. He now knew Mike wasn't his biological father.
What now?
What would the boy say when he woke up? How would he face Mike? And how should Mike face him?
Feeling restless, Mike ruffled his hair in frustration.
A few seconds later, he let out a long sigh.
Charles was his son—nothing could change that.
Checking the time, Mike headed to the kitchen.
For now, it was best to focus on preparing lunch for everyone.
Time passed slowly.
Based on past experience, Mike had expected Charles to wake up before lunch, but even after they finished eating, Charles still hadn't woken up.
Carrying a meal, Mike walked into Charles and Eric's room. Standing by Charles' bed for half a minute, he set the plate on the nearby table and said softly, "If you're hungry, get up and eat."
With that, Mike left the room and told Eric, who was standing by the door, "I'll be downstairs. Call me if anything happens."
Eric nodded, watching Mike go down the stairs. He pursed his lips, then pushed open the door and stepped inside. As expected, he found Charles wolfing down the meal.
Closing the door behind him, Eric crossed his arms and said coldly, "Why were you pretending to be unconscious?"
"I wasn't pretending! I really passed out."
"Since you're awake, why didn't you let me tell Dad? What's so important that you had to talk to me?"
When Eric realized Charles was awake, his first instinct was to inform Mike immediately. However, Charles stopped him, saying there was something he needed to discuss first.
"Give me a minute. Let me finish eating first," Charles said, struggling to swallow the food in his mouth.
Eric gave a soft snort of impatience.
For a while, the room was filled only with the sound of Charles eating.
"Gulp, gulp!"
Charles downed his juice in one go, let out a satisfied burp, and sat cross-legged on the bed. Eric, who was growing increasingly impatient, walked over to him. Just as Eric was about to say something, Charles looked up and spoke slowly.
"I saw Mom in Dad's memories."
"Hmm!" Eric froze for a moment before responding in an unexpectedly calm tone. "So what?"
Charles pressed his lips together, then said, "Why don't you take a look for yourself?"
With that, Charles used his ability to transfer the memories he had glimpsed from Mike directly into Eric's mind.
Moments later, Eric sat next to Charles, his face unusually serious for someone his age.
Charles hesitated before saying, "So, we're not Dad's biological children. That man…"
"Shut up!" Eric snapped, glaring at Charles. "I only have one Dad! No one else matters to me!"
Charles fell silent for a moment. "Dad is Dad, but aren't you curious? Why would Mom leave us with him instead of keeping us with her? Don't you want to know why? Don't you want to meet her?"
Eric stared at Charles, then asked, "What are you planning to do?"
"We're going to find him," Charles said, jumping off the bed. "I'll use my ability to uncover the truth!"
Eric raised an eyebrow. "Do you even know where he is? Or what he looks like?"
"I do!" Charles nodded firmly. "I found the answers in Dad's memories."
"Huh? Dad knows?"
"Yeah. After he adopted us, he looked into that man's background. He planned to tell us about him when we were older."
Eric frowned. "So what's the plan?"
"If you're coming with me, we leave now. If you're not, I'll go alone!" Charles said decisively.
"Alone? You'll just get lost, idiot," Eric scoffed. "So, I guess I'll have to take you there."
Charles broke into a smile. "Then let's go now!"
Without wasting any time, the two pulled out their backpacks and started packing.
They stuffed in a change of clothes, some pocket money they had saved up, and their skateboards.
Opening the window, they used Eric's ability to lower themselves to the ground. Taking one last glance at the house, they turned and ran into the distance.
Little did they know…
Clark had been watching their every move.
His eyes flickered as he deactivated his x-ray vision and glanced at Mike, who was nearby.
