Chapter 109: Chapter 109: The Exceptional Magic Wand
"We won! We won!"
Lucy and Happy hugged each other in celebration as they watched the Three-Eyed Demon fall.
The guild masters present also praised the victory one after another. After all, this was a demon created by the dark mage Zeref. Typically, even three S-Class wizards working in harmony would struggle to defeat it.
Makarov was all smiles, brimming with pride and satisfaction as his guild's wizards were showered with compliments.
However, his delight was cut short when George's voice, tinged with resentment, reached his ears: "Guild Master, if you don't secure that Cursed Flute for me, I might just consider switching guilds!"
Originally, Clover City had only been reduced to ruins. But due to Natsu's final attack, the city center now featured a massive crater, making repairs significantly more challenging.
"I'll handle it! Leave it to me!"
Startled by George's words, Makarov darted forward at lightning speed, reaching the flute before the Kingdom's soldiers could arrive.
He quickly looked around, then forcefully broke off the skull atop the Cursed Flute and discreetly handed the remaining flute body to George.
"Hide this quickly, so the Kingdom's knights don't see it."
"Thank you, Guild Master!"
George's mood instantly brightened as he happily tucked the flute into his backpack.
He had originally planned to sneakily shave off a small piece of the flute for crafting the staff shaft of his new magic wand. However, with so many people present—guild masters and the Kingdom's forces alike—it was too risky to approach the Cursed Flute.
Thus, earlier, George had told Makarov about his intention to create a magical tool that could greatly enhance his repair spells' efficiency, requiring a fragment of the flute as a material. He hadn't expected Makarov to go so far as to break off the skull and give him the entire flute body.
The larger the flute shaft, the better it was for crafting a wand.
"You must be the captain of the Kingdom's Knights here, right? This is the Cursed Flute—it's completely destroyed, leaving only this much."
Makarov handed the broken skull to the dumbfounded commander of the knights.
"When the Council arrives, please pass this on to them and ensure it's properly sealed. Also, let them know we'll send someone to repair the city in a few days. That's all."
Without waiting for a reply, Makarov hurried back and whisked Erza and the others away from the scene.
The Council's teleportation magic meant they would arrive soon after receiving word. If they didn't flee now, trouble would inevitably follow.
"Makarov, still the same as always!"
The guild masters of Four Hounds and Blue Pegasus exchanged amused glances. They, too, had once been members of Fairy Tail and close comrades of Makarov.
Though they eventually left Fairy Tail to pursue their own dreams and create their guilds, their affection for their former guild remained strong.
Nighttime, in a forest on the way back to Magnolia City.
"George, your magic is incredible! You should team up with us for missions!"
Natsu spoke with enthusiasm, biting into a golden roast leg of lamb, as he watched George wield his wand to prepare food using culinary magic.
Due to Erigor hijacking the train, it had been rendered inoperable. The rental magic vehicle was also destroyed in the battle, forcing the group to journey on foot.
Fortunately, George had prepared cooking utensils and supplies in his backpack, sparing them from a hungry night.
"I agree!" Happy raised his paw while munching on a grilled fish.
"Forget it. I'm not planning to take on missions for now," George replied, handing Natsu a fresh bowl of meat stew while slyly snipping a tuft of hair from the back of Natsu's head.
For wand cores, Natsu's hair was undoubtedly top-tier.
"George, missions are the best way to improve your magic," Makarov interjected, suddenly serious.
While having George stay in the guild as a backup wizard was beneficial for Fairy Tail, Makarov knew this wasn't the best path for George's growth.
As guild master, Makarov had always prioritized his wizards' development over guild interests, even if it meant defying the Council's expectations.
"I genuinely don't feel like it right now," George replied with a half-truth. "I'd rather spend some time reading and figuring out my magical path. Once I've made up my mind, I'll consider teaming up for missions."
George wasn't entirely lying—he did intend to finish reading all the magical texts in the library before venturing out to explore the world.
Still, he was a bit surprised by Makarov's encouragement, which only reinforced the guild master's reputation as a caring leader.
Two days later, in Clover City.
Now back in Clover City, George surveyed the ruins. The massive crater in the city's center had been filled in, likely by an earth-element wizard, while the displaced residents were temporarily housed in military tents outside the city.
"You're Fairy Tail's repair wizard, George?"
Ultear, the leader of the Council's investigative team stationed in Clover City, narrowed her eyes at the sight of the small golden cat with a backpack.
Ever since hearing that Fairy Tail claimed to have a wizard capable of repairing an entire city, she had eagerly taken on this mission, suspecting the use of the Lost Magic, Arc of Time.
But to her surprise, the repair wizard turned out to be a cat.
"That's me. If there are no objections, I'll begin my work."
George nodded and got straight to business.
The sooner he repaired the city, the sooner he could return to studying magic. Witnessing the strength of Erza, Natsu, and Gray during their battle with the demon had highlighted how much room he still had to grow.
Mastering giant magic and light magic had been a good start, but their advancement would require slow, steady effort. Meanwhile, his enchanted glasses would allow him to study other magical types and enhance his overall skill set.
"Of course. Please proceed, Mr. George."
Smiling, Ultear stepped back, watching intently as George pulled out his new wand—crafted from the Cursed Flute and Natsu's hair—and began casting repair spells over the ruins.
