Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Opening the Chamber of Secrets
"Got it!"
After returning from the girls' dormitory, George didn't go back to his own dorm right away. Instead, he rode his broomstick far away from the castle.
He pushed the broomstick to its maximum speed and landed in a nearby Muggle city. Disguising himself as a Muggle, he circled several bars in the city, changing his appearance and clothing multiple times before returning to Hogwarts.
By the time he reverted to his normal size and slipped back into his pajamas in the Slytherin dormitory, it was already 4 a.m. After dispelling the Stunning Spells on his three roommates, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
The following morning, everything seemed normal. Apart from Ginny herself, no one realized that George had snuck into the girls' dormitory and taken Voldemort's diary.
In truth, it was unlikely anyone would suspect him under normal circumstances. However, George had to be cautious because he was dealing with Dumbledore.
If Ginny confessed, Dumbledore would undoubtedly investigate who had taken the diary. That's why George went through such elaborate measures the night before.
Now, he could only hope Dumbledore wouldn't use a Time-Turner. If he did, George's efforts to cover his tracks might prove futile.
But George reassured himself. After all, when Hagrid and Sirius Black were falsely accused, Dumbledore hadn't resorted to a Time-Turner. That must mean it wasn't easily accessible.
Besides, Time-Turners could only rewind up to five hours, and anything beyond that was risky.
Even if he were discovered, it wouldn't be catastrophic. At most, Dumbledore would keep a closer eye on him.
After all, what had he done? He hadn't harmed anyone or committed any heinous crimes. He was simply curious about the diary.
And if worse came to worst, he could always claim he'd been influenced by Voldemort's manipulations.
Overall, George wasn't too worried about being exposed. Still, avoiding suspicion would make his life at Hogwarts smoother.
On Friday morning, after two uneventful Potions classes, George was pulled into Moaning Myrtle's bathroom on the third floor by Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny right after lunch in the Great Hall.
"What are we doing here?" George asked, feigning confusion.
Harry took a deep breath and explained: "George, Ginny told us everything. We think we know where the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is!"
Ginny stepped forward, her voice trembling yet determined: "George, I didn't want to lie to you all. I was just so scared at the time. But you were right—when you make a mistake, you shouldn't run from it. You should face it. So…"
She recounted her experiences once again.
"So, you want Harry to try speaking Parseltongue to see if he can open the entrance to the Chamber?" George asked, pretending to be shocked before seeking clarification.
Hermione nodded: "Yes. If Harry can open the Chamber's entrance, we'll immediately inform the professors so they can deal with the basilisk.
That way, no one else will get hurt, Dumbledore can return, and the school won't have to close because of the basilisk."
"Alright, let's try it then. If we just tell the professors without evidence, they probably won't believe us," George said after a moment's thought, agreeing to their plan.
After all, merely opening the entrance wouldn't release the basilisk, as there was another door further inside.
Moreover, letting the professors handle the basilisk would save him the trouble.
It was a safe, foolproof plan.
And as a bonus, he'd get to witness the top wizards of this world take on a basilisk. That would undoubtedly be a valuable learning experience for him.
He couldn't help but feel a bit excited.
Following Ginny's directions, Harry approached the sink with the small serpent engraving on the brass tap.
"Open!" he commanded.
Nothing happened.
"Harry, you have to say it in Parseltongue—the hissing snake language—not regular English," Ron reminded nervously.
George stepped in front of Ginny and Hermione protectively.
"If anything dangerous happens, just hold on to me," he said.
Of course, he knew there wouldn't be any danger, but appearances had to be kept. After all, acting was about selling the performance.
Harry and Ron had sought him out not only because they trusted him but also because they valued his skills. If something went wrong, he could protect them.
After all, George was the only student who had survived an encounter with the basilisk—saving Hermione in the process. To Harry and the others, this made him a reassuring presence.
"Got it. We're not afraid of that thing!" Ginny and Hermione each grabbed George's robes, trembling slightly but nodding firmly.
Though the two girls were scared, their Gryffindor bravery shone through. They even stealthily pulled out their wands, ready to assist if needed.
Ginny knew there was another door inside, so the basilisk couldn't come out. Still, the thought of facing a creature as deadly as the basilisk—a monster that could kill with a mere glance—kept their nerves on edge.
"Open!"
This time, Harry spoke in Parseltongue, the hissing, snake-like language.
Immediately, the tap with the serpent engraving began to glow brightly, spinning rapidly.
A moment later, the sink shifted, revealing a massive pipe that plunged deep into the darkness.
The pipe was wide enough for an adult to slide through.
"I'll stand guard here. Go notify the professors and the Heads of Houses right away!" George said, stepping forward with his wand pointed at the entrance, looking every bit the vigilant protector.
"Don't worry about me—I can fly. Even if the basilisk comes out, it won't catch me."
The four exchanged glances, then dashed off at full speed to alert the professors.
'If Voldemort knew about this, he'd probably die of anger,' George thought with a smirk as he watched them leave.
He glanced at the diary safely tucked away in his magical storage space.
The 16-year-old Voldemort had painstakingly manipulated Ginny into trusting him, gradually gaining control over her actions.
In just a few weeks, he would have been able to possess her completely and return to life.
But George had thrown a wrench into those plans, and soon, the basilisk—the Dark Lord's trump card—would be surrounded and slain by Hogwarts' professors.
