Chapter 19: MT - 19 The Final Lesson
Mana is undeniably the key factor that determines a magician's potential. Despite her remarkable skill, Roxy could only reach the level of a Saint Magician, limited by her mana reserves. Facing two geniuses and one prodigy had also left her with an unshakable sense of inferiority.
What she thought would be a simple job of tutoring for extra income turned into something entirely unexpected.
As the demonic energy in her heart surged, she felt mana beginning to gather endlessly.
This mana—dark yet pure—intertwined with Roy's. She could feel his presence just by being near him.
And when her gaze fell on Roy again, for reasons she couldn't explain, her cheeks flushed red. The boy in front of her seemed strangely captivating. While he hadn't exactly demonstrated mastery over life and death as he boasted, she found herself oddly unable to refuse his requests.
Roy, watching Roxy's reddened face, tilted his head in confusion. Why is she blushing again?
Roxy took a deep breath, but the subtle, fresh scent she inhaled only made things worse.
It was Roy's scent.
In the past, she never thought much about it. But now, the boy's fragrance reminded her of a lone plum blossom blooming in the dead of winter—dangerous, yet irresistibly alluring.
She tried to calm her thoughts, but her mind only grew more chaotic.
Damn it!
Roxy clutched her burning cheeks and fled the room.
For the next few days, she avoided Roy at every opportunity. Her evasiveness left him both puzzled and awkward. Was it really that big of a deal? He grumbled quietly to himself. It was just a kiss. A small, harmless kiss.
But Roxy's strange behavior left him at a loss.
Even at night, their interactions were awkwardly silent. That is, until Roxy fell asleep. Then, unable to resist her unconscious impulses, she would cling to him, her hands wandering unbidden. What's worse, she clung tighter than ever before, often squeezing him so tightly that he woke up gasping for air.
Roy endured these nights with a mix of suffering and reluctant joy.
Time marched on. No matter how much they wished otherwise, the days continued to pass.
And finally, the day came. Roxy had finished teaching Saint water magic. It was time for her to leave and embark on a new journey.
Standing in the gentle morning light, Roxy gazed at the sparrows chirping in the distance and murmured softly to herself, "Today is the last day."
She turned back to the group with a faint smile. Roy stood there, expressionless, stifling a yawn. Rudeus was busy teasing Sylphy.
Two years had passed since she started teaching them. In that time, they had all grown.
The small boy who had barely reached her waist now stood tall, nearly at her chest. It wouldn't be long before he grew even more, becoming stronger, more mature, and undoubtedly more handsome.
As her heart beat steadily, mana flowed through her, surging through her veins and spreading throughout her body.
But parting was inevitable. She could no longer stay.
Looking at Roy's calm face, Roxy sighed.
She, too, wished she could stay by his side and teach him for a few more years. But that would help neither of them.
Taking a deep breath, she inhaled the faint trace of his familiar scent one last time—a scent that had become an inseparable part of her.
Her expression turned serious. "Today is our final lesson. I will teach you the Saint water magic spell Cumulonimbus. I will demonstrate it only once. Roy, you must learn it."
Though her face was composed, her voice trembled ever so slightly.
Roy said nothing. He merely nodded.
They stepped outside. Beyond the house lay fields, a winding path cutting through golden stalks of rice. Beyond the fields stretched an endless expanse of grassland, dotted here and there with sturdy trees, their dense branches swaying gently in the wind.
The breeze carried the faint fragrance of wildflowers, rustling their clothes as they walked.
"You must learn this. I will only show it once." Roxy repeated firmly.
Roy stepped forward, dark mana surging around him. He formed a massive shield of pure black energy, enclosing Rudeus and Sylphy within its protective barrier.
Roxy blinked in mild surprise but said nothing. Taking a steady breath, she calmed her nerves and stepped forward.
"O Great Spirit of Water, O Child of the Thunder Emperor soaring high, Grant my wish."
Her voice was soft, but in the open plains, it carried clearly. With each word, her staff glowed with a brilliant blue light as mana poured into it, guiding the elements to assemble.
Clouds began to gather, veiling the once-clear blue sky in shadow. The sunlight dimmed.
Raindrops started to fall.
Tiny droplets pattered down, their rhythm growing steadier.
The rain slid down Roxy's cheeks. Her azure hair billowed in the wind, her long magician's robe fluttering wildly in the storm's growing intensity.
"Unleash your furious blessing, And show your overwhelming power to the small and insignificant."
The wind howled, a chaotic tempest whipping through the plains. Rising air currents spun wildly as lightning crackled within the dark clouds, streaks of violet illuminating the sky with destructive brilliance.
No matter the circumstances, lightning remained nature's most terrifying force.
Roy found his thoughts drifting to the novels he had read in his previous life. At last, he understood why they always spoke of overcoming lightning. Of all the forces in nature, lightning was undoubtedly the most fearsome.
"O Hammer of the Gods, strike the anvil and lay bare your awe-inspiring terror. Let the floodwaters drown the earth."
"O torrential rain, Cleanse, surge, and sweep away all in your path."
"Cumulonimbus!"
Roxy's chant concluded, her voice steady despite the mounting storm. The staff in her hands emitted a dazzling blue light as she released the spell.
The rain came down in torrents, driven by ferocious winds that tore through the land.
A massive bolt of lightning descended with a deafening crash, and in an instant, the grassy plain before them was reduced to a gaping crater.
The power was undeniable—worthy of being called a Saint-tier water spell. Yet, in Roy's eyes, it was merely that. Just barely worthy of the title.
It wasn't enough.
Roxy's robe was soaked through from the relentless rain, but curiously, the fabric she wore underneath remained intact. Whatever material her outer garment was made of, it seemed to shield her from the worst of the storm's effects.
Though a spellcaster was immune to harm from their own magic, the vast scale of such a spell inevitably left its mark.
Outside, the rain continued to fall in a light, misty drizzle. However, not a single drop touched Roy. The invisible barrier he had conjured repelled every drop, causing the rain to cascade off to either side and soak into the mud below.
Adjusting the brim of her hat, which had been askew from the wind, Roxy began to walk toward him.
Rudeus stood frozen, stunned by the sheer destructive force of the spell. Sylphy, too, seemed awestruck. Such magic was powerful enough to reshape the very land, its impact leaving an undeniable mark on the terrain.
