My Enigmatic Life

Volume Four, Chapter Two: Group Interview

(Gege's POV)

The school day comes to a close. Now, it's time for the real hassle. Taking my friends to meet up with my dad and the others. I'll be honest, I can't say that I'm confident.

"It's been a while since I've seen your dad, Gege. To think we would be seeing him for such a serious matter."

Akai, who's walking besides me, tries to strike up a conversation.

"It's has been while, hasn't it?", I say absent-mindedly.

Naoya, who's walking up front, turns to face us.

"A while?", he says, raising his eye-brows, "It's been about a year since we've last been to your place. Hell, we haven't even visited each other's homes for some time."

Huh. That's true. We probably didn't notice because we see each other at school all the time.

"Well, Mr.Watanabe seems to be just like how we remember him, so there's no need to feel nervous about that."

Daisuke's deep, raspy voice climbs from the back of us and reaches our ears. His cousin smirks mischieviously at him.

"Still trapped, eh?"

Daisuke is being tightly flanked by Renford-san and Akane-san, while Yoko-san walks slightly in front of him.

"That's correct, Naoya. I want to hear more about this gift he gave Yoko."

"Yes, me as well!"

"...I already told you why I got her the necklace, you two.", Daisuke sighs.

Yoko smiles slightly. To her, that necklace is a measure of her 'Aniki's' love.

"Well, how come you've never bought me anything that pretty?!", Akane-san protests.

"Yes, she's right Govvy. It feels like you have a bias, you know?"

"I don't."

"We know you don't, but still..

Daisuke simply rests his hands on their heads.

"Don't worry, I already have special gifts planned ahead of time for your birthdays. Except Yoko, she's not getting one."

"Oi."

Akane-san seems especially moved by this news.

"That'll make two special gifts I received from Daisuke-nii. Maybe I'm his favourite."

Yoko-san and Renford-san exchange glances.

"Of course you are."

"If you say so."

Naoya laughs loudly at the scene unfolding, whereas Akai and I watch on with mild amusement. This does help off-load some of my apprehension.

We make it to the station, and we go inside and enter one of the elevators. Once inside, I enter a secret PIN code, allowing us to access the secret area.

"Woah.."

Naoya gawks at the expansive size of the underground facility. Can't say I blame him, I had a similar reaction when I first saw this place.

"This is place is something right out of a Jeremy Rond movie, right Govvy?"

"Yeh, it sure is.", Daisuke replies, looking around.

"Who's Jeremy Rond?"

I'm as curious as Akane-san is, but we need to keep moving.

"This way.", I yawn.

We exit the elevator and walk straight down to the end of the corridor, I knock on the door and enter. Inside wait for us is, of course, my dad. But alongside him is-

"Welcome. It's nice to meet you all."

"Hey, Nii-chan! You've brought your friends along!"

Haruhi, my little sister. I was hoping she wouldn't be here...

"Hello, Mr.Watanabe. It's been quite some time, sir."

Naoya politely greets my dad, as Akai bows to him.

"Yes, it's good to see you boys again. Where's Matsuoka-shonen?"

"Takai is too busy working with his parents to come with us, sir.", Daisuke explains.

"Hey, hey. Don't you remember me?", Haruhi asks.

I hope they don't.

Akai nods at her, smiling.

"Of course we do."

"After all Gege is always so protective of you. It's nice to see you again, Watanabe-san."

Crap.

"You've gotten even more beautiful since I last saw you, Watanabe-san! You must be very popular!"

"What? No, I'm not really all that popular.", Haruhi says, embarrased.

And of course Naoya immeadiately moves to flattery. Time to change the subject.

"Shouldn't we be discussing some more pressing matters now?"

Daisuke nods, as he takes a step forward towars my dad's desk.

"The sis-con is right. Mr.Watanabe, I would like to construct my team."

I'm not a sis-con, bastard.

"Alright, as the leader, please list your members."

Daisuke once again nods, pulling out a sheet of paper from his pocket and handing it to dad. He surveys it quietly before looking up at it.

"I see Gege isn't listed here, why is that?"

"While Gege is a important friend who I trust, his combat prowess isn't on the level where it would be viable in this field of work."

I can't help but smirk inwardly. Well, I'm certainly glad that I'm not going to be apart of the menial labour, but I don't need to be fighter to be on the team. Dad chuckles at Daisuke's remark.

"My bad, Colen-shonen. I really didn't explain everything to you. How about you go to the left room a few steps up the hall?"

So, I guess it's time for these guys to meet their senpais, huh?
