My Enigmatic Life

Volume Two, Chapter Four: Spreading News

During break, I'm doing the same thing that I usually do, talking with my mates.

"Yo, the trailer for the new Case Monsters game looks pretty sweet. Have you guys seen it?", Takai asks.

"Yeah, I'm glad to see that they're allowing you have your monsters follow you again.", Naoya answers.

"Honestly, I never cared for it.", Akai adds.

"Really? It makes evolution by happiness far easier though.", Gege yawns.

"It also gives you a feeling of companionship.", I say, "How do you feel about it, Aoyama?"

Aoyama is our team's catcher and one of our close friends. His jovial demeanour suits his stout build perfectly.

"I'm really happy that it's back. How many games has it been without it?"

"About five, I think."

Akai replies with a bit of uncertainty. I think that he's correct though. I look down at my wristwatch, it's fifteen minutes until the next lesson. And while I'm rather enjoying our talk, there's something I want to do. I raise up from my seat and get ready to leave.

"Oi, I'll be back. I'm going to to check out something."

"Alright. Don't take too long, or else we'll start talking about the next Needlemouse game without having.", Gege nods.

"I'll be even faster than him.", I wave.

Leaving the classroom, I make my way downstairs to the second year classrooms. The way the main school building is set up is that the ground floor is where all the lockers and storage areas are. The first years are on the first floor, second years are on the second floor, and third years are, that's right, on the third floor. The cafeteria, for your information, is on the fourth floor.

"Let's see, is Class 2-A still on break?"

I carefully glance into the classroom, so they still are on break. Akane is talking to a few of her friends, and it looks like Yoko is doing the same. Right, I may as well go in. I duck my head under the short door-way. Some of the classroom look at me, which catches the attention of both Yoko and Akane. The both of them quickly leave their seats and come over to me.

"Hey, you two. How are your lessons going?"

"It's going just fine. But why are you here, Aniki?"

"I just felt like coming to see you two. I hope you don't mind."

"N-not at all, Daisuke-nii. I-I'm glad that you're here.", Akane says shyly, seems like she can't look me in the face.

Yoko smirks at Akane's embarrassment.

"You sure are forward, Ms.Akane. You have to teach me your ways."

"Shut up!"

Oi, don't start bickering, you two. Especially not in front of your class.

"Relax. Don't make a scene."

Akane strikes the ever familiar pose of putting her hands on her hips, grins derisively at Yoko.

"Oh, I see now. You're just jealous that I got to spend special time with Daisuke-nii and you didn't."

Yoko snorts dismissively at her haughty attitude.

"Yeah, I'm sure. It's not like I won't have Aniki all to myself come Saturday."

"Mmm...cow...", Akane mutters.

"What was that?"

"Oi, I said to not make a scene.", I repeat.

Looking over their heads, I can see their friends looking on us with great interest and amusement. And the boys....

"So, that's Yoko-chan's cousin... What a gloomy looking guy..."

"That foreigner fucker! How dare he speak to them!"

"He's Akane-chan's neighbour, the creepy-ass outsider."

"I hope he rots in hell."

Any louder and they might just be able to hear you from down the street, you bell-ends. Looking back down at them, I can see that Yoko and Akane have stopped going at each other and instead are casting sideways glares at the boys of the class. I don't like the look that they're giving them. I think I ought to go.

"Alright, then, I'll be off to class. See you later."

I pat Yoko and the head, ignoring the little, 'kyaaa', from the girls, and the death stares from the boys.

"Where's mine?!", Akane protests.

You'll get it later, when I'm not getting cursed.

It's the final lesson of the day, and unfortunately for me; that lesson is maths. By far my worst subject, and that's being nice. Even if I wrack my brains so hard that they start to leak out of my ears, I can just barely muster up a passing grade.

"Bloody hell....", I mutter to myself quietly.

I may as well sit here and look around the classroom. I'm sat in the last row, middle lane. So, I'm kind of in a place where it's hard to see me. Glancing directly in front of me, I can see that Gege is asleep. Again. In the middle row are Takai, Akai and Aoyama, who are all at work. So, Gege and I are the only ones shirking. Of course, Naoya is in Class 3-B, so he won't be here.

"Just a few minutes..."

I continue to gaze around the class, trying to find a way to pass the time away. Someone, once again catches my eye, the representative of Class 3-A, Hisakawa Shizuku. Known as 'The Crown Jewel of Class 3-A'. With long, black hair and silver eyes that are somewhat obscured by her long bangs. She's very pretty, and she carries he self with an elegance that reminds me of Aunt Sofia when she's around certain guests.

*RIIIINNNNGGG*

Finally, there's the bell. It's time to go. I reach forward and shake Gege awake.

"Yo, wake-up mate."

"Mhmmpf....?", Gege says stupidly.

By the way, Gege is better at maths than me. I'm a little jealous.

Our usual quintet are walking as a group after-school, trying to decide where we can go for lunch. I'm famished.

"Let's just go for some ricebowls.", Gege yawns, "There's a lot of places around here that sell them."

"Good idea!", Takai nods, "Daisuke, you're treating us, right?"

"Yes, I suppose going into debt would be worth it.", I sarcastically reply.

I spent my remaining pocket change on the date with Akane. So I'm going to have to go to the bank and withdraw money.

"Leave the loverboy alone, guys. His pockets are a bit weary."

"Loverboy?"

Naoya comes to my aid, but for some reason he gives me a title that isn't at all befitting of me.

"Don't play dumb, Govvy. All of the second years are talking about how you were chatting up with Yoko and Akane-chan during first break."

God above. News sure does travel fast. I don't regret going to visit those two, though.

"Damn it, Daisuke. How could you betray us like that?"

Don't act like you're about to cry, Takai. It doesn't suit you.

"I didn't betray anyone. And I'm not a loverboy either."

"Oh really? So what's the deal with the news about Yoko-san saying that she'll be having all to herself Saturday?"

News really travels fast. I wish that people would stop blathering all the time.

"So? What's wrong with cousins hanging out together, eh?", I say bitterly.

The bastards exchange smirks, and then they start to laugh.

"I didn't know that you were so interested in itokokon, Daisuke." , Takai guffaws, "I can understand it, though."

"You know, I've been asking him who's going to be the best man between Danny and I for a while now. He still hasn't told me."

"Oi, cut him some slack, Naoya. My sister is making the decision more difficult than it seems."

They continue to laugh at my expense, I'm seriously thinking about going home. Gege then rests an hand on my shoulder.

"Listen, Daisuke. Don't let them get to you, alright? I know that all of this must be a bit hard for you.", he says with understanding.

"Yeah, thanks, Gege. It honestly is a bit of an issue for me."

I'm glad to see that at least one of my mates is showing me some sympathy.

"Don't worry about it too much. After all, polygamy is legal! So you can just remedy the issue that way!"

The rest of  my quintet erupts into even more boisterous peals of laughter at Gege's joke. I take it back, all of them are pillocks. Wonderful.
