19: Such Things Happen
“Oh? You’re Kamidama, right? Are you alone? Maybe you’re just bored? If so, how about hanging out with me?”
“I’m sorry, but I’m waiting for my husband… er, my boyfriend.”
“Husband…? Well, whatever, you don’t need to lie like that. It’s pretty well-known that you don’t have a boyfriend, Kamidama.”
Leaving the staff room, I thought, “Well, since she said she’s waiting, I have to meet up with her…” and found myself witnessing an unbelievable scene.
What can I say… Kamidama was being harassed in an overly stereotypical manner.
I could understand this happening in the city, but I was mildly impressed that someone would do this at school. Being a beautiful girl isn’t easy, I guess. I thought as if it were someone else’s problem.
No, it really was someone else’s problem, but in this case, it wasn’t something I could just ignore. Kamidama wasn’t standing near the entrance hall with no plans or purpose; she had a clear objective.
She was waiting for me. And without that purpose, she probably wouldn’t be getting harassed right now.
In other words, if it weren’t for me, Kamidama wouldn’t be experiencing this unpleasant situation (probably). Thinking about it that way, a considerable part of the responsibility lay with me.
But still… the guy harassing Kamidama was a senior, judging by the color of the stripes on his indoor shoes.
I am a third-year student.
His hair was dyed brown, and he was quite tall. His looks weren’t bad either. He couldn’t compare to our class’s handsome representative, Tachimuka Hinata, but he was above average.
He also had a surprisingly solid build. I could vividly imagine being beaten up by him in less than two minutes if it came to a fight.
In other words, I was genuinely scared. After glancing at him directly, I quickly looked away and then did a double-take, then a triple-take.
I hoped he would resolve it smoothly over there, but it didn’t seem likely.
I’m really not suited for this kind of thing. Everything about this situation was against my nature. But pretending not to see it here would be wrong.
With a sigh that was almost a deep breath, I steeled myself. If the worst comes to worst, I could beg for forgiveness. Encouraging myself, I approached them.
Trying not to look directly at the senior, I stepped between them and grabbed Kamidama’s hand.
“Oh, there you are. Kamidama, the teacher is calling for you. She seemed quite angry, so we needed to hurry.”
“Huh? Uraku?”
“What? Hey, wait a minute, who are you?”
“Sorry, senior. But the teacher is calling, so we really need to go.”
I ended up saying that it’s a bit unfair for Kamidama to get in trouble. The senior, slightly taller than me, looked at me with obvious irritation.
Whoa… really scary. Having never been in a fight, this was too intense for me. My legs started shaking, but I couldn’t back down now.
Unintentionally, I had positioned myself between Kamidama and the senior, blocking her from his view. My heart was pounding, and I felt my life span shortening by the second.
Damn, I want to run away, but I can’t. What’s with this situation!?
I felt like I was experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime event.
“Hey, it’s not like I was bullying her.”
“Look, I told you the teacher is calling. Are your ears just for decoration?”
“What!?”
The senior raised his voice in anger. Of course. Maybe because I was so flustered, I ended up speaking in my usual sarcastic tone.
I realized midway and tried to switch to a more respectful tone, but it only made it seem like I was mocking him even more.
What do I do now?
My poor communication skills were showing in the worst possible way.
Thinking I’d have to resort to running away, I suddenly felt a soft warmth against my back. Kamidama hugged me, resting her head on my shoulder.
“Hehe. This person is my husband that I was waiting for. Isn’t he cool? Especially how he’s trying to hide his fear and acting all tough, isn’t that great!? His hair even bounces with his emotions, and that’s so cute and mysterious too──”
“On second thought, senior, please take this crazy girl away.”
“…What!? What kind of adorable couple reaction is that!? If that’s the case, just say so earlier, damn it! Be happy!”
“No way… he’s so fast…”
Kamidama’s sudden outburst drove the senior away in an instant, and he even left a surprisingly nice parting comment.
Trying to score points like that isn’t good, I thought. At the same time, the tension drained from me, and I slumped my shoulders.
What was all that unnecessary tension for?
I wanted my moment of bravery back.
“You were so cool, Uraku.”
“Cool… really?”
“Really, really. You’re always cool, but you were especially cool just now, my dear husband.”
“She’s calling me her husband as if it’s normal…”
Any complaints I might have had vanished when I saw how genuinely happy Kamidama looked. I sighed softly, unable to put my feelings into words.
It might not have been my achievement, but I was glad it ended well.
