My Seatmate is Apparently My Wife from My Past Life; She Still Loves Me in This Life as Well

20: A Simple Boy

“You’re always busy doing something for someone else, despite what you usually say and do.”

At Tatara High School, club activities are not mandatory, which is evident from the fact that I’m not part of any club. Therefore, not many students stay after school—though it’s not entirely empty, the school feels deserted enough after classes that it seems like a different place.

If you listen closely, you can hear the sounds of the baseball and soccer teams from outside, and from inside the school, the faint melodies from the brass band reach your ears. As I leisurely wander through the quiet school, I hear the occasional laughter of students lingering in classrooms or in cultural clubs. Walking beside me, Kamidama remarked, amused.

She had a look that seemed to say, “Still the same, aren’t you?” I shrugged, deciding not to respond to her comment.

“Busy? I’m usually free after school. It’s rare for someone to ask me for a favor like today, and it’s even rarer for me to agree.”

“Really? I wonder about that.”

“Yeah… Anyway, I’m already tired from earlier, so I’m practically out of motivation.”

“But you’re still here, helping the teacher out. You’re really good. Good boy, good boy.”

“Well, actually, I’m working now because of you… Hey, are you listening? Hey!”

Kamidama grabbed my arm—actually, she was hugging it tightly—and dragged me along, pretending not to hear anything inconvenient. Despite the mentally exhausting incident earlier, I’m now seriously tackling this task not because I’ve suddenly developed a strong work ethic.

In fact, I was super tired and wanted to leave the school. I even thought about rewarding myself with a parfait at a family restaurant. But the reason I’m not doing that is, of course, because of this crazy beautiful girl—Kamidama Kagari.

When I mentioned the task from Mr. Takatsuki, she cheerfully suggested we start right away, calling it an “after-school date,” leading to the current situation.

I considered breaking free and running away, but unfortunately, the key ring Mr. Takatsuki gave me was already in Kamidama’s hand. While I doubted she’d misuse it, leaving it with her didn’t seem right, so I reluctantly followed along.

We leisurely walked through the quiet school, our footsteps echoing in the deserted halls.

The task given to me by the teacher wasn’t difficult. Even an elementary school student could do it, though it was tedious and time-consuming.

So having a companion might not be such a bad thing after all. My ultimate playmate, my smartphone, was tucked away in my pocket. Walking and using my phone would get me in trouble if caught.

Especially if our PE teacher caught me. He’s like a gorilla who lives to catch rule-breaking students and yell at them. If he found me, I’d be in for a long lecture.

To avoid that risk, having a conversation partner was ideal. Even though I enjoy being alone and I’m good at entertaining myself solo, I’d still get tempted to use my phone if it were out.

“So, Uraku, I’ve decided to give you a reward for working so hard.”

“Hmm, a reward? I’m already getting anxious. You’re not going to kiss me, are you?”

“Uraku, you pervert.”

“What? Wait, you can react like that?”

Even though it was just a light-hearted comment, Kamidama’s face turned bright red. She looked like an innocent girl despite always clinging to me and invading my personal space without hesitation. I was so shocked I spoke aloud.

Kamidama let out a cute groan and said softly, “But…”

“But you thought a kiss from me would be a reward for you, right?”

“No… I mean, you could see it that way, but no!”

“But it’s okay. I thought it might be a bit early for you, and I needed to prepare myself, but if you want it, I’m fine with it.”

“Don’t worry! I’m not okay with it at all!”

Seriously, stop with this sudden sweet atmosphere! It’s making me feel weird, and my heart’s racing for no reason.

What’s going on here? It feels like I’m the bad guy, but Kamidama is accelerating this flow, consciously or not.

If I chose the wrong words, there’d be no turning back—I started sweating nervously.

“Just kidding. You’re so flustered, it’s kind of refreshing.”

Kamidama said with a bright smile. She then stroked my flushed cheek, looking at me fondly.

“Hehe, just teasing you. Were you surprised?”

“You… I thought my heart was going to leap out of my mouth.”

“Good. I wanted to add some excitement to your boring day☆.”

“Stop with the life-shortening type of excitement…”

Sighing deeply, I watched Kamidama rummage through her bag. What was she planning now? As I stepped back warily, she moved closer.

Then she inserted her index finger into my mouth—no, it wasn’t her finger. It was something hard, and her finger just followed it in.

“Mmph… It’s sweet. A cookie?”

“Correct! I baked them this morning. How is it? Delicious?”

“Yeah, but you baked these this morning? Who’s the busy one now?”

“I do it because I like you.”

I almost pointed out that she should be doing it for herself, but seeing her happy, I kept quiet.

Besides, I had already tasted it. After receiving lunch from her, now I was getting sweets too.

Considering this, it made me wonder which part of me had claimed I couldn’t eat other people’s homemade food.

Though it didn’t mean I’d suddenly be able to eat food made by Sanae or Aika—letting my guard down and eating would risk our delicate relationship.

For now, Kamidama’s cooking was all I could manage… Not that I’d be getting more tomorrow. I’d usually just have a packaged snack.

I felt like I was getting too soft and cursed my own simplicity.
