Chapter 44: The Fourteen Great Families of the Land of Fire
A series of events left Blood Ninja stunned, completely confused about what had happened. That Uchiha child was supposed to save him, yet ended up killing him instead. Was there some kind of grudge between them?
"Do you two have a grudge?" Blood Ninja couldn't make sense of it and directly asked.
"No grudge," Xuan answered simply.
"Then why did you kill him?" Blood Ninja asked, puzzled.
"I not only killed him, but I'm going to kill you too!" Xuan said coldly.
Blood Ninja paused for a moment, then broke into a wide grin, "Haha, a special jonin, talking so arrogantly about killing me. This is too funny."
Xuan didn't respond, just holding a kunai with his three-tomoe Sharingan glowing coldly as he fixed his gaze on Blood Ninja.
Blood Ninja's laugh faltered when he saw the killing intent in Xuan's eyes—the kind that only someone who had actually killed could possess. This child... really wanted to kill him.
Blood Ninja studied Xuan more carefully. The child was wearing a Uchiha clan black robe, holding a long sword, and looked no older than five. He seemed calm beyond his years, not at all like a child. His three-tomoe Sharingan looked almost blood-red, but there was no doubt that he was a special jonin. Blood Ninja sneered, "I've heard the Uchiha clan is arrogant, and now I see it for myself. A five-year-old child, while you may have extraordinary talent to become a special jonin at this age, you're arrogant enough to try to kill me. You're asking for death. That Chiba brat you killed is from one of the Fourteen Great Families of the Land of Fire, and even though the Uchiha clan is stronger, he was still part of an elite family. He wasn't much weaker than the Uchiha. Don't blame me for your foolishness."
Had Xuan been just a jonin, Blood Ninja would have had no intentions of fighting. He would have fled immediately. He still remembered the last time he fought against a jonin from the Senju clan, and although he won, it was mostly by luck. The Uchiha clan, like the Senju clan, had a fearsome reputation, and with the power of the Sharingan, fighting them one-on-one wasn't something anyone took lightly.
"The Fourteen Great Families of the Land of Fire?" Xuan raised an eyebrow, showing a slight interest. This was the first time he had heard such a term, and no one in his clan had ever mentioned it.
Blood Ninja, seeing his opportunity, sneered and continued, "The Fourteen Great Families of the Land of Fire refer to the strongest fourteen factions in the land, divided into two Sects, three Houses, four Clans, and five Secret Techniques. The Uchiha and Senju clans are the most powerful families in the Warring States era. No one dares to compare. These two Sects are the strongest among the Fourteen Families. The three Houses are the Hyuga, Kaguya, and Onmyou clans. Then there are the four Clans: the Uzumaki, Sarutobi, Fūma, and Chiba clans. Lastly, the five Secret Techniques refer to the five famous secret technique clans of the Warring States: the Oil Woman Clan, Inuzuka Clan, Akimichi Clan, Nara Clan, and Nakayama Clan. These collectively form the Fourteen Great Families of the Land of Fire."
Xuan silently recited the names of these fourteen families. Aside from the Onmyou, Fūma, and Chiba clans, which were unfamiliar to him, the rest of the families had all been part of the formation of Konohagakure. He realized why no one in his own clan had mentioned these families—because to an Uchiha, they didn't acknowledge such a concept. In their eyes, there was only one true family in the Warring States: the Uchiha clan.
Perhaps the Senju clan could be considered as well, but no third family was worth mentioning.
"Earth Style: Earth Stone Explosion! Kid, you're still too green. Die!" Seeing Xuan lost in thought, Blood Ninja seized the opportunity, pressing his hands down, and the ground suddenly cracked open, a dark crevice shooting out like lightning toward Xuan's position.
The next moment!
An explosive sound rang out.
Small stones flew like shurikens, splattering across a wide area, demolishing buildings and injuring those who had no time to escape. Some unfortunate bystanders were torn apart by the barrage and fell to the ground, their deaths sudden and violent.
The explosion created a massive crater, two meters long and one meter deep, where there was no trace of the victims, not even their bones.
"Hahaha... a mere special jonin dares to pursue me? You should learn your lesson next time. Not everyone can be casually provoked. The Uchiha clan, ha!"
Blood Ninja hadn't been this pleased in a long time. He had just killed two members from prestigious families, without suffering a single wound. Now, he was preparing to leave for the Land of Earth, where he could find refuge with a new family. That was his leverage. However, he regretted not being able to take the Sharingan from the Uchiha child. It would have been a valuable prize, but he didn't want to tempt fate—taking it might lead to endless pursuit by the Uchiha clan, and even a new family in the Land of Earth wouldn't be able to protect him then.
Just as he prepared to leave, a flash of cold light suddenly appeared in front of him. His heart skipped a beat, and he instinctively sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the kunai thrown at him.
"What's going on? Another pursuer?" Blood Ninja thought, frowning. But when he turned, he was shocked to see Xuan standing in the same spot where he had been earlier. How had he missed noticing him?
"Where are you looking?"
A voice suddenly whispered in his ear, and before he could react, a sword gleamed and slashed at him.
"What?!"
Blood Ninja's eyes widened in disbelief. The child, who had been so far away just moments ago, was now right in front of him with a sword aimed at his chest.
Years of combat experience kicked in, and Blood Ninja's hand automatically reached for a kunai, deflecting the sword strike, but it was a frantic and rushed defense. The sword's force was deflected but still managed to graze his forehead, leaving a wound from which blood trickled down.
When he looked again, Xuan was still standing in the same spot he had been at the beginning, as if he had never moved. Fear gripped his heart. He had never encountered anything so strange before.
