Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Team 8 vs. Kurenai
The next day, at 7 a.m., Yagyu had already completed his morning training and was in the bathroom showering. His shadow clone was busy preparing breakfast.
When the clone placed the meal on the table and dispelled itself into a puff of white smoke, Yagyu stepped out of the bathroom, ready to eat. After breakfast, he headed to his room to get dressed.
He wore a white inner shirt, a black trench coat, black ninja pants, and ninja shoes. Securing his ninja tool pouch and forehead protector, Yagyu entered the bathroom one last time to put on his red-tinted contact lenses. Once fully prepared, he left for the training ground.
Despite leaving early, at 7:25 a.m., Yagyu found himself the last to arrive.
"Good morning, Hinata, Shino," Yagyu greeted.
"Good morning, Yagyu-kun," Hinata replied respectfully, her tone warm as usual.
Shino, leaning against a wooden post with his hands in his pockets, gave a brief nod. "Morning."
Yagyu wasn't bothered by Shino's seemingly aloof demeanor. While others might mistake Shino's behavior for arrogance, Yagyu knew better. As a time traveler familiar with the future, he understood Shino's reserved personality masked a deeply loyal and warm heart. In Boruto, Shino had even shed his stoic persona.
With one shy teammate and one quiet one, Yagyu found conversation challenging. He might have teased Hinata if Shino weren't present, but with Shino's insect-based sensory abilities, any embarrassing moments could become permanent blackmail material.
Instead, Yagyu leaned against a wooden post, closed his eyes, and awaited Kurenai's arrival.
The Test Begins
By 8 a.m., Kurenai arrived precisely on time, teleporting into view with a Body Flicker Technique.
"Looks like everyone's ready. Let's begin," Kurenai said. She retrieved three bells from her pouch, dangling them before the team with a smile. "Your task is simple: take these bells from me."
She attached the bells to her waist and declared, "Alright... begin!"
In an instant, the three Genin disappeared into the forest, leaving Kurenai standing alone in the clearing. She didn't chase them or use sensory techniques to locate them. Instead, she remained in place, seemingly daring them to attack.
Unlike Kakashi's bell test, which had a strict time limit and only two bells, Kurenai's challenge was noticeably easier, perhaps reflecting her gentler approach.
The Attack Begins
Moments later, three kunai flew from a nearby tree, their sharp whistles cutting through the air. The aim was precise, targeting Kurenai's head—a clear display of the thrower's skill.
Kurenai made no effort to dodge. Instead, the kunai embedded themselves into her "body," which promptly transformed into a puff of white smoke, revealing a wooden log in its place.
Substitution Technique.
Kurenai reappeared from behind another wooden post. This subtle display signaled that she wouldn't go all out but would still test her team's abilities.
Soon, three small black pellets shot from another tree. They landed near Kurenai's feet and to her sides, erupting in puffs of white smoke that enveloped her.
"Eight Trigrams: Air Palm!"
Through the haze, a clear shout echoed. Hinata appeared, launching a compressed blast of air from her palm. The shockwave dispersed the smoke, revealing Kurenai once more—her form shimmering and transparent, like a mirage in the desert, before fading entirely.
Behind Hinata, a black shadow materialized, ready to strike. But just as the shadow lunged, Hinata's form dissolved into smoke—it had been a shadow clone.
Emerging again from behind a post, Kurenai's face lit up with genuine surprise. "A Shadow Clone Technique?" she marveled. "Impressive."
This revelation delighted Kurenai. If Hinata could use such a chakra-intensive technique, her reserves were far beyond the standard for her age.
Before Kurenai could dwell on this, a shout from behind startled her.
"Water Style: Great Waterfall Jutsu!"
A towering wave of water, nearly six meters high, surged toward her with crushing force. Kurenai's eyes widened, and for the first time, she opted to evade with a Body Flicker Technique.
The wave crashed into the ground with a resounding boom, soaking the area. Two identical figures darted across the water's surface, heading straight for Kurenai—Yagyu and his shadow clone.
Watching their approach, Kurenai's astonishment deepened. "To create such a massive wave in a dry environment… is he really a Genin?"
No time to think further. As the two Yagyus closed in, Kurenai drew a kunai, prepared to test their close-combat skills. But just as they neared, one Yagyu leaped backward, forming hand seals mid-air.
"Water Style: Great Waterfall Jutsu!"
Again, a massive wave erupted, this time directed at the charging Yagyu. As the water surged overhead, Yagyu raised his right hand, palm up, as if preparing to catch the descending torrent.
