Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Temporal Shadow
Upon closer observation, the differences between them became clear.
The distinction lay in their eyes. One had a shuriken-shaped Mangekyō Sharingan, unmistakably Obito's Kamui. The other's Mangekyō Sharingan pattern matched Akira's—black tomoe connected in a circular formation.
Beyond their eyes, they were identical in every other aspect.
But the difference in their eyes was the most defining factor.
Looking at the two figures, Akira stroked his chin and thought, "This dojutsu is rather intriguing. A shame I can't communicate with them…"
This was his ability. His left eye could summon himself from a specific point in the past, while his right eye could summon himself from a distant point in an infinite future.
The range of how far back or forward he could summon depended on the amount of chakra he expended.
This ability was called Temporal Shadow, symbolizing his ability to summon shadows of himself from different points in time. Unlike the shadow clones of Limbo: Border Jail, the Temporal Shadows were visible to others and could be physically attacked. The shadows would only vanish if Akira himself were defeated or if the summoned shadow was defeated.
How long the summoned shadow could remain depended entirely on Akira's chakra reserves and its survivability in battle.
At first, Akira had thought this technique was a low-tier version of Limbo, but further research revealed its stark differences. Compared to Limbo, his Temporal Shadow had far greater potential. However, its starting point was undoubtedly weaker since Limbo was a Rinnegan ability and thus inherently superior.
The summoned versions of himself lacked Limbo's invisibility but had no restrictions on using jutsu. In theory, they could perform any technique Akira himself was capable of. Moreover, the ability wasn't limited to Akira alone—it could be used on others.
Akira's lips twitched as he muttered to himself, "What exactly was that mental fragment's deepest desire back then? Why did I awaken this particular dojutsu?"
Given the situation at the time and his understanding of Obito's persona, Akira assumed he'd awaken something space-time-related like Kamui. Yet, here he was, wielding a time-manipulating ability that left him puzzled.
Unfortunately, Akira couldn't determine the mental fragment's original wish. When he consumed the fragment, he deliberately avoided absorbing its memories to prevent his own mind from becoming chaotic.
Memories, unlike chakra or spiritual energy, were difficult to separate once merged.
"Well, at least Temporal Shadow is acceptable," Akira murmured.
It wasn't as useless as Amaterasu or Tsukuyomi, but neither was it something to celebrate.
In short, it was… satisfactory.
"Now it's time to test if the cloning technology has any flaws."
With that thought, Akira completed the hand seals for the Spirit Transformation Technique. His spiritual form left his body, stepping into the cloned body of Obito.
Moments later, the clone sat up from the experimental table.
As its eyes opened, a pair of blood-red, three-tomoe Sharingan spun into view.
Akira focused his chakra, and in an instant, the Sharingan transformed. The three tomoe rotated rapidly, forming a shuriken-shaped Mangekyō Sharingan.
"My hypothesis was correct," Akira said with a smile. "The cloning process wasn't flawed—it was simply because I hadn't awakened my own Mangekyō Sharingan at the time. Now I can proceed without worries."
If Obito's clone could perfectly replicate his original traits, then the same should hold true for the clone of Ōtsutsuki Toneri.
Akira's theory had been that his incomplete Sharingan hadn't unlocked the necessary "hardware." Now, having awakened his own Mangekyō, the clone's Mangekyō was activated as well.
"All that's left is to refine my own clone. Once that's done, I can move forward with transplanting my dojutsu."
Transplanting a dojutsu was as risky as evolving to the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Both processes enhanced one's ocular power.
However, transplanting a dojutsu allowed a single pair of Mangekyō Sharingan to possess multiple abilities, though the risk of blindness remained.
On the other hand, the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan provided eternal light, though it only granted the user's original abilities.
In a way, transplanting a dojutsu was an alternate path to breaking the limits of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
Still, the difficulty of achieving the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan was much greater, which was why Akira needed a clone. Only once he had a backup pair of eyes could he truly begin.
Meanwhile, he would also work on merging the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, as the two processes didn't conflict. For Akira, it was merely a matter of preparing more clones.
As time passed, Akira waited for his clones to mature.
Meanwhile, in the Land of Rain, Nagato was far from idle. With White Zetsu's help, the Akatsuki had recruited two new members: Kakuzu, a bounty hunter active in the underground market, and Sasori of the Red Sand, a genius puppeteer.
However, that was it. Nagato, adhering to his principle of quality over quantity, refused to settle for mediocrity.
Staring at the half-emerged Black Zetsu, Nagato asked, "Zetsu, do you have any other suitable candidates?"
Black Zetsu responded with a shrug. "The experts of the shinobi world are already well-known and established. I can't think of anyone else."
Nagato sighed. "That's unfortunate. Our current lack of high-end combat power is hindering the tailed beast capture plan."
Black Zetsu was silent for a long moment before a sly glint appeared in his eyes. "Nagato, I might know of a strong candidate."
"Oh?" Nagato's interest was piqued. Anyone Zetsu deemed strong was worth considering. "Who is it? What's their story?"
Black Zetsu smirked. "A member of the Uchiha clan—Uchiha Hikaru. She was once a weapon created by the clan during the Warring States period. Right now, she's sealed away."
"A weapon of the Uchiha clan?" Nagato asked, intrigued.
"Indeed. During the Warring States, the Uchiha sought to create a human weapon to gain an edge against the Senju. Hikaru was the result…" Black Zetsu explained briefly.
"I see," Nagato nodded. "Will she help us?"
"She will," Black Zetsu affirmed. "As long as we position ourselves against the Uchiha clan, she'll have no reason to refuse."
Nagato smiled. "Very well. I'll leave this to you. The Akatsuki needs capable hands now more than ever."
