Chapter 73 - Surprise
“Okay, let’s keep moving forward.”
“Sure.”
Shen Qiu put away the ring, and the two continued to feel their way ahead.
After half an hour, they reached the end.
On the stone wall at the end, there were several U-shaped iron rings embedded.
Yun Xiaoxi held the oil lamp up to illuminate the ceiling and saw a closed iron lid above. If nothing unexpected happened, this should be the exit.
“I’ll go up first; you help me take down the lamp.”
“Got it!”
Shen Qiu hung the submachine gun on himself and took the lamp.
Yun Xiaoxi quickly grabbed the iron rings on the wall and started to climb up.
She soon reached the top, gently pushed open the iron lid, and poked her head out.
After observing the surroundings, she signaled to Shen Qiu to come up and then flipped out.
Seeing this, Shen Qiu followed and climbed up. When he emerged from the exit, the sight before him made his nerves tense up.
They were inside a stone room of several thousand square meters. The walls of the stone room were adorned with oil lamps, and the stone walls were painted with twisted, bizarre murals.
There were one-eyed demons holding knives and forks and anxious-looking little dwarfs.
These patterns resembled scenes from hell.
Inside the stone room, there were rows of coffins neatly arranged, with at least five hundred of them.
A glance around was extremely shocking.
Aside from the coffins, there were no members of the Gray Scorpion organization in sight.
However, even so, Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi did not dare to act recklessly. They held their breath and carefully observed their surroundings.
“Some of the coffins are open; they must have been cleared out by the Gray Scorpion organization. This place should be safe,” Yun Xiaoxi whispered to Shen Qiu after surveying the area.
Shen Qiu’s expression changed several times as he was about to say something when his ears suddenly perked up.
Thud, thud—
A faint sound echoed.
Shen Qiu’s heart suddenly tightened, and he reminded her, “There’s a noise; it should be coming from those unsealed coffins. There wouldn’t be any monsters, would there?”
It was understandable why Shen Qiu was so nervous. There were at least one or two hundred unsealed coffins, and if they all burst open…
They would likely only have the option to flee in panic.
Yun Xiaoxi listened carefully and, following the direction of the sound, turned to see a closed red coffin that seemed to be slightly moving.
“I’ll go take a look!”
As she spoke, Yun Xiaoxi grabbed the oil lamp from Shen Qiu with one hand and held her sharp sword with the other, cautiously inching closer.
Shen Qiu drew his mechanical knife and followed, feeling that cold weapons were more effective in close combat.
The two of them cautiously approached, inching closer.
When they were about five or six meters away from the coffin, Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi heard muffled struggling sounds.
“It’s a person! It must be someone who was captured. Let’s hurry and save them.”
Yun Xiaoxi’s eyes brightened as she instantly realized what was happening.
At this moment, Shen Qiu grabbed Yun Xiaoxi’s arm and quietly stopped her.
“No, we can’t save them now. There are so many captives, and most of them are ordinary people. They can’t control their emotions and could easily cause a riot. If the members of the Scorpion organization get alerted, we would be in trouble.”
“That makes sense. I understand,” Yun Xiaoxi replied rationally after listening to Shen Qiu’s words.
“Okay, let’s go.”
Shen Qiu was quite satisfied with Yun Xiaoxi’s decision; she had a sense of justice but was not blind to the reality of the situation.
The two of them tiptoed towards the entrance of the stone house.
The wooden door was slightly ajar, so Shen Qiu gently pushed it open and peeked outside.
The entrance led to a dimly lit corridor, with an old wooden door at the end that was wide open.
Aside from that, there were no signs of any figures.
After confirming there were no problems, Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi slipped out and walked through the dark corridor to the open wooden door.
Peering inside, a prison filled with a rotting smell came into view.
The prison itself was made up of primitive iron cells, with cells connected on both sides of the central corridor.
Inside the iron cells, there was rotting straw, and scattered among it were numerous white bones. The poses of these bones were grotesque, with many of them having their hands clasped around their own necks.
“I don’t see any members of the Gray Scorpion,” Yun Xiaoxi whispered.
“What the hell are these guys up to?”
Hearing this, Shen Qiu also felt a bit puzzled. Where had the members of the Gray Scorpion organization gone?
“Not sure. Let’s go inside.”
Yun Xiaoxi led the way in quietly.
Shen Qiu followed closely behind her, constantly glancing around.
The large prison was eerily silent, creating a strong psychological pressure.
To be honest, in such a spooky place, it wouldn’t be surprising if something suddenly jumped out.
However, unexpectedly, when Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi reached the end of the prison, nothing happened at all.
Everything went so smoothly that both of them felt uneasy.
But Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi were both quite resilient; even though they sensed something was off, they still steeled themselves to push open the prison door.
As they passed through the heavy door, they entered a spacious underground stone chamber.
The air in this stone chamber was filled with a strong, fishy odor, which Shen Qiu struggled to endure as he looked around.
Before him was a blue stone dissection table, cluttered with various rusty dissection tools. His gaze shifted to the side.
There, he saw a crucifix, wrapped in iron chains about ten centimeters thick.
Next to the crucifix was a coal stove, on top of which lay branding irons and other torture instruments.
Beside the coal stove was a very rough old-fashioned electric chair, which had a semi-circular iron cover hanging over it, presumably meant to cover a person’s head.
Shen Qiu looked at the electric chair and could basically confirm that the technological development in this world had gone awry.
He calmed himself and continued to observe the surroundings.
A large number of torturous devices, such as wooden horses and drowning pools, came into view.
Even the floor, paved with blue stone, was completely soaked with darkened bloodstains. One could imagine how many people’s nightmares had taken place here.
Shen Qiu increasingly felt that this cathedral was abnormal; how could a normal cathedral have such facilities?
There was definitely a major secret hidden here.
Thinking of this, Shen Qiu felt an inexplicable surge of excitement.
“This place has probably been ransacked by the Scorpion people.”
Yun Xiaoxi crouched by the dissection table, examining the dusty instruments, which showed signs of having been handled. She whispered, “Let’s keep moving forward; I have a feeling that the Gray Scorpion members shouldn’t be too far from us.”
Shen Qiu replied in a low voice, “Right.”
Yun Xiaoxi nodded slightly and walked toward the front door of the interrogation room.
As they approached the sturdy front door, they suddenly heard intermittent sounds.
Shen Qiu and Yun Xiaoxi both instinctively made a gesture for silence.
Then, Shen Qiu slowly pulled the door open a crack, revealing a small gap.
Shen Qiu pressed his eyes against the crack of the door to look inside, while Yun Xiaoxi crouched down and peered through the gap as well.
The area outside the interrogation room was a very spacious laboratory, filled with wooden cabinets displaying various bottles and jars, as well as tables cluttered with various crude instruments.
