Chapter 39
Chapter
After a sigh and an apology for calling a human “human” under the madness of Enok, he casually browsed the map and sketched a rough mental route to the Elf Union.
‘It’s not that far off.’
Even if he traveled with the nameless elf, it probably wouldn’t take more than a month. However, there was something he had to think about now.
‘It might be okay to swing by home….’
Since he had come in a surprisingly opposite direction from home, drawing a straight line to the Elf Union meant crossing right over his house. Stopping by home to see Rionne’s face might be nice, but….
‘She would be embarrassed, right?’
It’s not like he had parted ways tearfully weeks ago—it was just today.
No, technically it would soon be the day before, but is that really such a big difference?
‘Let’s just pass on it for now.’
As much as he wanted to see embarrassed Rionne, it felt a bit inappropriate. Something told him he’d end up not leaving the area and visiting home every two days if he wasn’t careful.
“Um… is it okay to stay like this? It seems like chaos right now.”
“Hmm?”
Following the elf’s voice, he glanced in the direction she pointed. Bright torches illuminated a dark alley. Clearly, these guys were Adolf’s subordinates anxiously searching for him.
“Speaking of which, we didn’t even introduce ourselves. What’s your name?”
“In, in this situation…?”
“I’m Enok.”
After a brief pause, Enok removed his mask.
‘It shouldn’t matter since it’s an elf, right?’
With the conclusion reached after some contemplation, he added another line.
“I’m Enok Estor.”
“Estor…!?”
The elf’s jaw dropped. It wasn’t the name of the Estor family that surprised her—sure, it was an impressive house, but elves didn’t get caught up in family prestige like humans did.
But,
“You’re an elf!?”
The elf stared intently at Enok’s face after he took off the mask. He certainly looked like an elf—short, round ears could be magically altered, so that wasn’t entirely impossible. But that wasn’t the problem here.
“Did an elf really say such crazy things!?”
“What did I say?”
“What did you say? What do you mean, what!?”
The elf was practically bouncing off the walls. Of course, Enok, who had no clue what was wrong, didn’t care.
“So, who are you?”
“Uh, um…?”
“Your name.”
“Yonia Clemford….”
“Clemford? You’re nobility?”
“Nobility? What are you talking about?”
Yonia gave Enok a peculiar look before suddenly realizing.
“You have that ring….”
“Oh, this?”
Enok lifted his hand. A beautiful golden ring shone brightly on his left ring finger. It felt strangely warm, almost like Rionne’s presence, and a smile crept onto Enok’s face.
Seeing that, Yonia began to vaguely understand something. It had taken her a while to notice, but that ring exuded a strong elven scent.
The emblem of the Estor family was one thing, but it was now apparent that the faint breeze’s scent around him was a blessing from the high elves. So, that ring must have been given to him by a high elf.
“You… you’re not an elf, are you?”
He was probably human, and it was likely that Enok, the name, belonged to a simple elf enthusiast. Given that elves were a beautiful race, it was quite common—and not entirely unreasonable—to have people like that around. However, it was quite unusual for a high elf to show such care.
“An elf does not differentiate between commoners or nobility. They earn the title ‘High Elf’ only when they transcend their kind, but that’s merely a title of respect.”
“Oh?”
“My surname, Clemford, is the same. Elves don’t have surnames like humans do.”
This was a revelation to Enok. Rionne didn’t particularly like to talk about the past. Because of that, he had missed quite a few things associated with elves.
“So that’s how it is.”
Enok’s fondness for Yonia increased! It seemed he might learn more about elves through her.
– Found it! It’s over there!
– Get the boss immediately!
Enok looked at Yonia.
“Should I hold you, or do you want to ride on the fox?”
“Fox?”
“Eri.”
At Enok’s call, Eri appeared from his bosom. Seeing a small baby fox, Yonia’s eyes sparkled.
“So cute!”
“Right?”
Perfect! It looked like riding on Eri would work out.
“Eri, give her a ride.”
[Yes, Dad!]
With a determined bounce, Eri stood in front of Yonia and performed a somersault.
Wheeled-, with a light motion,
Pach-!
Electric currents jumped as Eri grew significantly bigger. Of course, she was now big enough to comfortably carry an elf, and her previously round, cute form had become sleek.
[Get on! But if it’s too heavy, it might hurt my back….]
“It’s not that heavy, okay!?”
With her face flushed, Yonia gracefully mounted Eri’s back. As expected of an elf, she was remarkably agile.
[Oh, Dad! I think she’s lighter than Mom!]
“Lighter than Rionne? Hmm….”
Maybe it’s because her breasts didn’t weigh as much?
Enok barely held back what he was about to say. He knew it was not the right time for such comments.
“Shall we go then?”
Adolf was drawing nearer now. If he was caught, things could get quite troublesome, so retreating for now seemed like the best option.
But one thing puzzled him,
“What’s their deal?”
After finding his position, he tossed a gift toward the swarming humans.
“Ki, connect, ignite.”
Known as chain lightning, an electric-type magic. Violet lightning swooped from target to target, setting people ablaze and illuminating the street brightly.
“Let’s go.”
With a loud bang, Enok charged out as Eri, carrying Yonia, trailed behind. Yonia looked down the street with a sorrowful expression.
“All those lives….”
“Don’t worry about it. Pitying enemies is foolish.”
After all, weren’t those the same guys who had tried to sell her into slavery? Enok couldn’t comprehend why she felt that way.
However, Yonia thought a bit differently.
“Still, before being enemies, they’re lives. They must have families and friends.”
“That’s the same for you. You were the one almost in big trouble; there’s no reason for you to care about their circumstances.”
Unless she was planning to go up and take their heads, of course, Yonia was an elf, and Enok thought that they were both gentle and somewhat soft-hearted as he gathered ki in his hand.
Carnage – One Element.
The starlight infused in his hand tore through the barrier blocking his path in an instant.
BAP-!
For reference, that barrier was entirely unrelated to Adolf. It was set up by the city.
The barrier enveloped the city in a dome shape along its walls, meant to defend against attacks from above, and naturally, if it broke, loud alarms would start blaring.
Like this.
WIIIIIIIIIIN──────!!!
In an instant, the city was thrown into chaos.
The sound of soldiers rushing out. The loud clattering of metal armor. The clanging of alarm bells. Bright lights shot up from the castle walls, accompanied by shouting soldiers.
Glancing at Yonia, who was staring blankly at the scene, Enok slipped his mask back on.
[Dad! I have a feeling we’re going to get scolded for this!]
“…No. When in danger, I told you to just focus on getting out of there.”
[Aha!]
Realizing that, Eri’s mouth hung open. Not out of surprise but as electric currents crackled within her open mouth, gathering. It was a technique mimicking the breath used by dragons.
Petit Breath!
The little breath of the fox whizzed across the night sky.
In a blink!
Charging forward, Adolf came running, having probably slightly disheveled himself in his hurry as he charged his fist full of strength.
“Stop right there!”
Who really would stop just because he said so? Enok casually flicked his gaze aside and extended his gloved hand.
Wuuuuuuu─────
Complex circuits drew together above the glove. These were previously saved spells.
The glove’s nifty function wasn’t complicated. It had a memorize function. Simply put, it allowed him to store spells in stock format.
Once saved and released, that was all there was to it, but it wasn’t that simple. The glove could hold five spells at once. Each would be released from his fingertips, allowing Enok to play around with them a bit.
Kiiiiiiing──────!!
Each fingertip bloomed with a small halo.
Seeing that, Adolf instinctively took a defensive posture. Getting hit directly would likely end up with more than just a simple hurt.
“Good instincts.”
Enok smirked, bringing his fingers together before suddenly spreading them wide. The dark night momentarily burst into a radiant display of purple light.
BOOM─────!!!!
With that explosion, a massive crater formed in the fields before the castle walls. Having blocked it with all his might, Enok watched as Adolf disappeared into the distance.
“Damn it….”
Why was he so fast? The level itself seemed to be in Adolf’s favor, but he couldn’t keep up with the speed at all.
Had he obtained that power by engraving stars? A subordinate rushed over to Adolf, who clenched his fists.
“Boss! We just got a message from above!”
“…What did they say?”
“They said they’ll assist with tracking. They’ll hold someone accountable later, but right now, it’s most important to keep it from reaching the Swordmaster’s ears….”
“Sounds about right.”
With the response he had expected, Adolf let out a sigh of relief. Accountability meant nothing if he wasn’t alive to face it.
Having to tangle with a monster like the Swordmaster was definitely something he wanted to avoid. If it came down to that, he would rather fight an entire nation head-on.
“Prepare yourselves. We’ll be leaving as soon as we find his location.”
“Yes!”
*
Running at a speed that easily surpassed the speed of sound, Enok paused suddenly. The surroundings felt familiar. He had inadvertently stepped into Rionne’s forest.
“Here….”
Yonia sparkled her eyes, looking around. It seemed elves loved forests, huh? When he looked at her with a hint of curiosity, the unexpected response surprised him.
“Is this the forest where Rionne resides?”
“You know Rionne?”
“Rionne!? How dare you speak so disrespectfully! Do you have any idea how many years separate you from her!?”
“About a thousand years?”
“Not that much, I’d say…?”
Yonia scratched her head. After contemplating for a moment, Enok asked her.
“Rionne is famous even among the elves, right?”
“Huh? Of course! There’s no elf who doesn’t know her name!”
Naturally.
Rionne was someone who couldn’t go unnoticed.
With such looks and personality, alongside her impressive abilities and vast skills, word of mouth would surely spread on its own.
“The Steel Blood Swordmaster! The Blood Avenger! The Cold Blade Demon!”
“…Huh?”
“There’s even a famous story about her throwing a teacup at the head of the head of the Estor family!”
“…Oh.”
