Rebirth of the Last Days: Double Pets

Chapter 17 - Ice Element

Tang Ruo collected the two empty cups and looked at him hesitantly. She really didn’t dare to sleep alone now.

It was only five o’clock. Before the apocalypse, this would have been well before dinner time. But in the apocalypse, it was already time to sleep.

Her current state was indeed amusing. Bai Qi walked over and lay down on the other side of the bed.

There was still a bit of distance between them. And even though they were on the same bed, they were covered by separate blankets.

“Sleep, it’s getting cold,” Bai Qi said, looking at her.

Tang Ruo nodded and closed her eyes.

But the soundproofing here was terrible, and the thunder outside was too loud, mixed with the low growls of zombies, making it impossible to sleep.

Tang Ruo shrank further into her blanket.

After a while, when Bai Qi noticed her eyes were still tightly closed but her eyelashes were trembling, he sighed lightly and leaned over.

He gently patted her face and covered one of her ears with his hand. Then he whispered into her other ear, “Go to sleep. Didn’t you say you can enter the space only after you sleep? So, sleep early and enter the space sooner. We’ll rely on you for our supplies in the future.”

In the soft, heartwarming atmosphere, Tang Ruo blushed a little, but after hearing his last sentence, the mood was completely gone. She unconsciously muttered, “I’m just free labor, aren’t I?”

Bai Qi chuckled softly and said, “Go to sleep.”

Tang Ruo thought she still wouldn’t be able to sleep, but with Bai Qi gently holding her and the familiar scent of his body, she gradually fell asleep, even with the rain, thunder, and growls outside.

As she drifted into sleep, Tang Ruo unsurprisingly entered the space.

She planted all the saplings from the warehouse in the field outside and watered them.

Fortunately, she could control everything in the space with her mind, or she would have been exhausted.

After that, she started storing water. She had taken a lot of basins from Shimao, and now it was easy to fill them using her mind.

After confirming that Tang Ruo had fallen asleep, Bai Qi got up quietly and listened by the window for a while. Since neither of them had powers yet and could fall into a feverish coma in the middle of the night, he had to be fully prepared.

Bai Qi didn’t return to the mattress until he felt his mind starting to fog over.

Turning his head, he saw Tang Ruo sleeping soundly beside him.

A faint smile appeared on his lips. It was the best night he’d had in the three years of the apocalypse.

The faint scent of Tang Ruo’s hair occasionally wafted towards him, and Bai Qi also fell asleep peacefully.

Waking up for the third time on Bai Qi’s chest, Tang Ruo was quite amazed. How did she manage to kick off her blanket and snuggle into someone else’s?

And looking at Bai Qi, who was lying there as if he hadn’t moved an inch…

She couldn’t figure it out!

Tang Ruo pretended to get up calmly, reached out to touch Bai Qi’s forehead, and after confirming that his fever had subsided, she went to wash up.

She had already stored a lot of water yesterday, so taking out a basin to wash up was no problem. Moreover, she found that the small stream in her space seemed shallow and narrow, but it actually held a lot of water. After watering the fruit trees and filling all those basins, the water level hadn’t decreased.

Outside, a fine drizzle was still falling. Without the sun, the drizzly weather felt even more oppressive.

After drinking a cup of walnut milk and seeing that Bai Qi had no intention of waking up, Tang Ruo went to the window, took out some flour to ferment, and continued making the glutinous rice balls she hadn’t finished yesterday.

She didn’t like eating alone. After her grandmother passed away, she had eaten alone for four years. She had thought she could finally eat with her dorm mates in college, but a cold had left her eating alone again. So, she wanted to wait for Bai Qi to wake up so they could eat together.

When Bai Qi opened his eyes, he saw Tang Ruo kneading dough not far from him, wearing a retro brown shirt. Her fair hands emerged from the intricately patterned sleeves and kneaded the white dough. She was very focused, her eyes on the dough, not noticing that Bai Qi had already woken up.

Bai Qi suddenly found this scene very warm.

Once the dizziness and weakness passed, Bai Qi got up. When Tang Ruo saw him awake, she was delighted. “Do you still feel uncomfortable?” she asked, washing her hands and handing him his toiletries.

“Not as much,” Bai Qi replied, first checking if his power had awakened. Finding it hadn’t, he helped Tang Ruo tidy up the bed and blankets on the floor.

After breakfast, Tang Ruo continued preparing food.

They had previously gathered a lot of coal, a small stove, and various kitchen utensils, so cooking here wasn’t difficult.

Tang Ruo cooked while Bai Qi helped. After finishing their meal, Bai Qi made them work out using the exercise equipment they had brought yesterday.

It was raining outside, and the rainwater carried the virus. Since they hadn’t awakened their powers yet, Bai Qi estimated they would gain their abilities after tonight.

With this in mind, they decided to stay inside.

One of them could stay in bed for weeks without getting up, while the other could hide in the dark for days during dangerous situations. So the two of them ended up staying in a small ten-square-meter room for the entire day.

Tang Ruo was the first to fall asleep again, but this time, she couldn’t fall asleep inside the space.

She had watered the plants, loosened the soil, tidied up the space, and fetched water… Tang Ruo thought she had exhausted herself, but still, she didn’t feel sleepy in the space.

Tang Ruo: “…”

Heavens, are you messing with me again?

Am I going to be stuck in this space, unable to leave?

Bored, Tang Ruo hugged a big radish and counted the plants in the field.

As she counted, realizing she still didn’t feel sleepy, she got up and started boiling water using her mind.

Yes, she was boiling hot water because, since she entered the space through her thoughts while asleep, she could sense the essence of things, but couldn’t physically experience them. So, she decided to boil a lot of hot water, making it easier to have a bath later when outside.

When Bai Qi woke up, he noticed that Tang Ruo, who usually woke up earlier than him, was still asleep.

Seeing her head resting on his shoulder, Bai Qi found it a bit strange.

Strange one: Why hadn’t she woken up yet? Strange two: How had she rolled onto his shoulder?

He touched her forehead and, finding she didn’t have a fever, he felt relieved.

Carefully getting up without disturbing her, Bai Qi’s first action was to extend his right hand and condense ice crystals.

A small piece of ice formed on his index finger, then grew larger until it became a five-centimeter-long crystal in his palm. That was his current limit, but this ice crystal was much larger than when he had first discovered his ability three years ago.

With a flick of his wrist, Bai Qi shot the ice crystal, which pierced five meters across the room into the metal window frame, embedding half of itself.

Bai Qi was satisfied with both the accuracy and power. Everything had improved significantly compared to three years ago, a natural result of practicing with his ice ability over that time. Now, as it reawakened, he instinctively knew how to control it.
