Chapter 18 - Daily Life
Perhaps the majority of people have already awakened their abilities. Since humans have awakened abilities, zombies should be able to form crystal cores as well.
As long as there are crystal cores, his abilities can be upgraded, making them even more powerful and providing greater security for himself.
After washing up, Bai Qi found that Tang Ruo was still not awake. He gently patted her face, only to discover that she was muttering something.
He listened carefully but couldn’t make out the content, only catching faint snippets like, ‘Grandma… I’m doing pretty well…’ Bai Qi gave Tang Ruo some water, and seeing that she was still sound asleep, he decided not to disturb her further.
It was still raining outside, with thunder and the tendency to rain even harder.
Bai Qi couldn’t remember the weather in the early days of the apocalypse, but he recalled that after he made it ashore, it never seemed to rain again. So, in the later stages of the apocalypse, water became increasingly precious. Water-type ability users became more and more valued by the leaders in the apocalypse base.
Not only did the rain continue incessantly, but the number of zombies outside the theater also increased.
In just one day, the number of zombies outside seemed to have doubled. Yesterday, when they arrived, only a few zombies were wandering around outside.
A loud clap of thunder woke Tang Ruo. She raised her head and saw Bai Qi standing by the window, looking down. She clutched her head, muttered something, and then sat up: ‘I was busy in the space all night yesterday, but I just couldn’t fall asleep.’
Seeing her awake, Bai Qi turned around and asked, ‘Were you planting trees? You don’t have to finish it all at once, take your time.’ Then, he helped her get up, handed her the washing tools he had prepared, and gently pushed her into the small room next to them. He himself arranged various breakfast items on the table he had set up the day before.
Bai Qi’s bag also contained various foods and drinks, but they couldn’t be kept warm. However, there was a stove here, and he had just used it to heat up the food he had prepared the day before.
‘Yes, planting trees, but I also did a lot of other things.’ Tang Ruo said while brushing her teeth and washing her face, recounting the things she did the previous night.
Bai Qi quietly listened, occasionally chiming in.
Afterward, she noticed that Bai Qi hadn’t started eating breakfast without her and was waiting for her to eat together. She smiled and sat down, picking up a piece of omelet and taking a few bites.
Then she remembered: ‘Oh right, didn’t you say you’d awaken your abilities today? What ability did you awaken?’
Bai Qi opened his palm, revealing a transparent ice crystal.
Tang Ruo blinked and touched it: ‘Wow, what a cool ability.’ She mimicked his gesture, opening her palm and trying for a while, but nothing appeared.
Tang Ruo felt a bit dejected.
Seeing this, Bai Qi smiled, took a sip of walnut milk, and said, ‘Perhaps your ability is a physical type.’
‘There are different types?’
Bai Qi explained, ‘Of course. Besides the elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, and their derivatives like ice, lightning, and wind, there are also physical abilities. Those with extraordinary strength are called strength-type abilities, those with exceptional speed are speed-type abilities, and there are also space abilities and healing abilities, which are all considered physical abilities.’
Tang Ruo thought for a moment and put down her egg pancake: ‘Then how should I test my ability?’
Bai Qi handed her a cup of walnut milk: ‘Do you feel any unusual power within your body?’
Tang Ruo took the walnut milk, sat down, and carefully felt within herself, but she still shook her head.
Bai Qi pondered for a moment. If there’s no unusual feeling, it’s likely that she hasn’t awakened an ability.
Seeing Tang Ruo’s small face scrunched up in frustration, Bai Qi patted her head and comforted her, saying, ‘Maybe your space is your ability. Since you already have this ability, don’t be too greedy. Many space ability users don’t have a space as good as yours, where they can even farm.’
Hearing this, Tang Ruo realized that she did indeed have an ‘ability’, and her earlier displeasure vanished instantly.
After her mood improved, she noticed the cup of walnut milk in her hand and happily drank it.
Then, while eating, she asked Bai Qi about the space abilities of others.
Bai Qi naturally answered each of her questions, but only based on what he knew. He said that the space abilities he had seen expanded with level progression. The initial space was only a few square meters, and time passed at the same rate as the outside world. With further progression, the space would expand several times over, and in the later stages, it would even have some self-defense attack mechanisms.
After breakfast, Tang Ruo asked Bai Qi to demonstrate his ice crystal ability.
Bai Qi also wanted to practice, so the two of them opened the window on the second floor and practiced their skills on the zombies outside.
As soon as the window was opened, the smell of ‘meat’ wafted out. The zombies, who had been aimlessly wandering around, immediately perked up and headed towards the building, shambling towards their target. But before the leading zombie could take a few steps, with a ‘whoosh’, an ice crystal pierced its brain, and its head quickly froze over with a layer of thin ice, and it fell.
‘Impressive skills…’ Tang Ruo was excited. Fighting zombies this way seemed just like players in a game battling monsters.
And it felt like a fully immersive experience!
With the advantage of height, where the zombies couldn’t reach them and could only wander around below, Bai Qi quickly took down a dozen zombies.
However, the number of zombies below didn’t decrease. For everyone killed, another would approach from a distance.
The number of zombies didn’t lessen, but Bai Qi’s ability was already exhausted. This was his limit. Being able to take down a zombie with a single ice crystal was already much better than when he first awakened his ability three years ago.
Most of the zombies now were still unevolved. They knew there was meat and food upstairs, but they didn’t know how to get up. They just kept banging on the walls below the window. Once the window was closed, after a while, they would leave on their own and continue wandering around.
It was still raining outside, and it was unsafe to go out, so the two decided to stay here for a few more days and wait for the rain to stop before venturing out. They had enough food anyway.
Practicing their abilities, cooking meals, and training their bodies made the time pass quickly.
And so, the two lived harmoniously for four days, with one fighting zombies and the other cooking.
Tang Ruo’s space had a stream of heated water, but since they hadn’t taken a bathtub or anything with them, they made do with the changing room and bathroom here, where it was convenient to take a hot shower.
Another morning came. When Bai Qi woke up, he found that the rain had stopped outside, and there was a long-awaited burst of sunshine.
Recently, Tang Ruo had been waking up later, and Bai Qi had gotten used to her rolling over to sleep next to him every day.
He gently moved her head off his chest, got up quietly, and left the bed.
With the sun out, the number of zombies outside had indeed decreased, likely because they had hidden in dark places.
No matter what it was like outside, life had to go on as usual. Bai Qi showed no signs of discomfort as he rubbed his face and went about his morning routine: washing up and preparing breakfast for the two of them.
Just as he finished washing up and was about to heat up the soy milk on the stove, he heard the sound of the front door downstairs being smashed open.
The second floor where they were was a bit far from the door, and if it hadn’t been such a loud noise, it wouldn’t have alerted Bai Qi.
Glancing at Tang Ruo, who was still lying on the mattress, Bai Qi wrapped her in the blanket, carried her into the small changing room, closed the door, and carefully picked up the military shovel. He opened the door and took a look downstairs, bypassing the backstage.”
