Chapter 19 - Superpowers
“Can you slow down a bit? Look where you’re going! Damn, driving like that, do you have a death wish?!”
“I-I-I…” The other man was clearly shaken. “I saw two things running over here really fast… Who the hell knows what’s up ahead! Haven’t you noticed that H City has turned into a zombie cage?”
Another man’s voice intervened, trying to stop the argument: “Enough with the arguing! Let’s go see what those two things are…”
They rounded the back and finally saw the scene below. On the ground were a man and a woman—the man was young, the woman middle-aged, likely a mother and son. After the car crashed through the gate, three burly men jumped out. All of them were muscular, probably working in security or similar jobs before the apocalypse.
The noise they made attracted nearby hiding zombies. One of the men extended his hand, and a ball of fire ignited in his palm, which he then threw at the zombies. The fireball wasn’t very large, and his accuracy wasn’t great either. Although the fireball hit the zombies, it did not affect their actions, and they continued to charge at them with snarling faces.
“Rat, hurry up! Can’t you see they’re coming?” the man throwing fireballs shouted as he kept tossing them.
A wall slowly rose up, blocking the three men: “I’m trying! I just discovered this ability this morning. I’m still not very good at using it.”
The third man stood farther back, holding a long iron rod, keeping watch.
Among the three, one had fire abilities, another had earth abilities, and the third either hadn’t awakened his abilities or had physical enhancement abilities.
At this moment, the mother and son who had nearly been crushed under the car took advantage of the chaos to quickly run into the theater. As they rushed upstairs, they spotted Bai Qi standing behind a curtain.
The two paused for a moment, then, realizing that Bai Qi was human and not a zombie, they breathed a sigh of relief and ran in the other direction.
The second floor was quite large, with many rooms. Bai Qi and his companion had chosen the innermost room on the right side.
Seeing that the mother and son had no intention of coming their way, Bai Qi glanced at them briefly before turning his attention back to the fight downstairs.
Eight zombies had been attracted by the noise. After being blocked outside by the earth wall, fireballs started flying everywhere. Before long, the man with the fire ability leaned against the car door, panting heavily. “Damn, having abilities is even more exhausting than killing zombies the old way. My aim is off, and it takes so much energy.”
The earth wall continued to keep the eight zombies at bay. The zombies, lacking intelligence, didn’t think to go around the wall and just kept pushing forward. The burly man with the iron rod stood behind the wall, stabbing the zombies in the head with precision and just the right amount of force.
It turned out he had a strength-based ability.
Meanwhile, Tang Ruo had finally fallen into a drowsy sleep inside the space. Lately, she had been very active in the space and found it difficult to fall asleep. Every time, she had to exhaust herself working in the fields before she could sleep. However, when she woke up today, she felt extremely hot, wondering if something was on fire outside. Upon waking up, she realized she was wrapped in a blanket, half-reclining in a changing room.
Tang Ruo thought, “…”
Is this some sort of plan to roast me alive?
She quickly threw off the blanket and got up, but then she sensed Bai Qi outside and the group fighting downstairs.
So, someone had attracted a group of zombies outside, which explained why Bai Qi had put her in the changing room. But did he not know that in the apocalypse, the temperature difference between day and night is huge? Shouldn’t he have uncovered the blanket before putting me in this confined space?
Wait, that’s not the main point…
The main point now is: Why can I sense that Bai Qi is outside, that there’s a group of zombies and three people fighting downstairs, and that there are two people in the room to the left?
Did I awaken a clairvoyant ability? No, that’s not it.
Super hearing? That doesn’t seem right either.
Tang Ruo quickly got up, skipping her usual morning routine, and walked out of the room.
Hearing the noise behind him, Bai Qi turned around to look at her. As she approached, he noticed that she seemed in good spirits. He didn’t realize that his gaze had softened as he looked at her. “You’re awake? Come over and take a look at how they’re using their abilities.”
Tang Ruo could actually feel how the people downstairs were fighting, but sensing it and seeing it with her own eyes were two different things.
“Is that a fire ability?” Tang Ruo asked, her eyes wide with curiosity as she watched the brilliant flames.
Over the past few days, she had learned a lot about abilities from Bai Qi’s explanations.
“Yes, one of them has a fire ability, another has an earth ability, and the third has a strength ability,” Bai Qi replied, noticing the joy in her eyes. He added, in a good mood himself, “But their accuracy isn’t very high. Now that most humans have awakened abilities, zombies will start evolving too.”
Zombies would evolve, becoming faster, with tougher heads and bodies. While before, you could easily pierce their heads with a sharp object, it wouldn’t be so easy after they evolve…
This was something Bai Qi had mentioned before. Tang Ruo frowned slightly. She had heard that zombies would get stronger, but she still found the idea deeply unsettling.
These creatures were already disgusting before evolving; if they became any stronger, she wouldn’t even want to look at them.
Seeing that most of the zombies downstairs had been killed, Bai Qi figured there was nothing more to see, so he led Tang Ruo back to their room.
As long as they didn’t bother her, she had no desire to interact with them.
Tang Ruo sat down in the room with Bai Qi. Noticing there was no breakfast on the table, she casually took out some glutinous rice balls from her space and placed them on the table. “If zombies continue to evolve, it will become even harder for ordinary people to survive in the apocalypse.”
Seeing her with her hair down, Bai Qi realized she probably hadn’t had time to wash up. He prepared everything she needed and handed it to her. “Survival of the fittest—this world has always been cruel.”
Tang Ruo sighed and quietly went to wash up.
After that, they followed their daily routine of having breakfast. Although there were more people in the building now, breakfast time couldn’t be delayed.
Bai Qi listened to the low growls of zombies coming from outside the window downstairs and said, “We should leave here today.”
There were now other people occupying the building, and all three of them had abilities. It’s wise to stay cautious of others, and given Tang Ruo’s secrets, it was better for them to find a place where only the two of them could live.
Tang Ruo nodded, then put down the glutinous rice ball in her hand and said, “By the way, I can sense things far, far away. I can feel them, even though I can’t see them. Does that count as an ability?”
She hadn’t realized it before. Over the past few days, when she and Bai Qi were alone in the building, she didn’t notice anything unusual since no one else was around. When Bai Qi was fighting zombies, he would open the window, and she would just stand next to him, looking down, so she didn’t notice anything different.
It was only when someone suddenly barged in today that she realized something was different.
Bai Qi was a bit surprised. “You can sense things outside this room? Can you sense zombies?”
Tang Ruo nodded and moved a little closer to Bai Qi. “Yes, when I woke up earlier, I could sense you were outside, and that there was a fight with zombies downstairs. Also, I can sense that those three people have already moved up to the second floor, but they went to the left. There are also two people staying in the small room at the far end of the left side, but I can’t tell their gender or anything like that.” She paused and then asked, “What kind of ability is this?”
Bai Qi was stunned for a moment and then looked at her intently, his expression serious. “You must not tell anyone about this ability except me.”
Tang Ruo didn’t fully understand why, but faced with Bai Qi’s stern demeanor, she naturally nodded. “I definitely won’t.”
She wasn’t foolish; she knew not to reveal her secrets to others. Bai Qi was someone she had come to trust, someone special and different, who held a certain place in her heart.
After all, they had woken up on the same day, which was also the day of their engagement…
